Gone at 97. Fighter ace. First to break the sound barrier. IMHO easily one of the coolest people this country has ever produced.

I read his autobiography years ago. He was a true American hero and an amazing man blessed with both almost superhuman genetics and flying intellect. I read a few of his accolades today. He was still flying into his 80's, but said it wasn't so much the love of flying, but to get him to places to hunt and fish.

I had assumed he passed away years ago, so I was shocked when my wife told me about this. I knew of him from my readings on flight and the space program and also from Sam Shepard's portrayal of him in "The Right Stuff," a movie I watched multiple times back when I had time to actually watch movies multiple times.
