I see that not being content with “defunding” themselves to an impressive rise in major crimes, Seattle is mulling making poverty, addiction or mental illness a defense for most misdemeanors. Steal a sandwich because you’re hungry, we are told, and your theft will be excused. Great news for peckish pilferers, but perhaps less so for sandwich vendors.

I think addicts should be placed in protective custody like drunks used to be put in a drunk tank. Many drugs are so addictive it would necessitate their being in a locked rehab program for at least 6 months.

Mentally ill people may also need protective custody and treatment.

As to poverty in my state if you are too poor to pay court fines the judge lets you perform community service, but that needs to be reformed. It's too easy for people to lie and say I spent X number of hours helping my elderly neighbor. The work needs to be in supervised programs.

Are they looking to St. Louis is their model? They should because that’s what we do, coddle the criminals.

Meanwhile our city prosecutor goes after the super rich who have the nerve to stand on their property and defend it. What a ridiculous shit show this is. Even though the McCloskeys are fairly jerky people, that isn’t why she is going after them.

I can hardly wait to reduce my investment in this city.

Seattle has a wide range of serious problems, and has been unable to make much progress on them during the 20+ years I have lived in the region. The very day I moved here, the WTO riots were in full swing.

KOMO, one of the local news stations, produced an interesting documentary recently:

A quite good regional weather expert was fired for making some observations about the issues himself:

I have often thought about purchasing a small apartment in Seattle, but the issues the city has have put me off the idea for some time now.

As a former social worker they have always been at risk somewhat. Most mentally ill people aren’t violent. We were sent into people’s homes alone all the time. Then one in Kenosha was brutally raped and murdered in her home. They followed her home from work. We had cases together and on a few she was working to terminate parental rights because of the horrific abuse. I just knew it was one of her clients. We all had to talk to the police about the clients we had in common. She worked for the county and I worked for a private company. She handled the cases, made decisions and I actually worked with the clients and wrote reports. It took 20 years to solve but 2 men in prison in another state did it as a favor to a friend that was also friends of one of our clients. The social workers that inherited the tough cases just returned the kids because they were afraid. The only reason the case was solved was because friends and family kept pressure on law enforcement and also got TV stations in big cities to feature it every Easter weekend which is when she was killed. After that we all insisted on meeting clients in public spaces. We had no offices.

Obama said we need to quit using the slogan defund the police because that’s not what most proponents of the movement and the public really want. Decriminalizing these offenses is a bad idea as it’s often a opportunity to get people the help they need with a diversion program.
