One thing the Trump years will go down in history for is the creation of the United States Space Force. They will be responsible for military operations outside the atmosphere, and perhaps Comic-Con.

Their members will be referred to as “guardians”. I’m not sure how I feel about that. There have been soldiers, sailors and marines for centuries, and I always though “airman” had a sort of jaunty 1930s-ish ring to it, however politically incorrect. But as a former holder of the Space Operations (Senior) badge, “guardian” seems too Hollywood to me. I’m not sure what a better name might be, but surely there must be something cooler.

"Space Mariners"? Space cadets is fitting, but reminds me some a few old college and work acquaintances.

There may be little bit of competition in naming and roles in space endeavours from other earthlings. They will be 'spaced out".

I really don't see the need for Space Force. We had NASA.

NASA is focused on exploration, science and technology, the Space Force is a military operation. But while the two have very different missions and overall goals, "we share the same domain and we're operating in the same environment. So there's a lot of synergies, a lot of overlap."

Back in ancient times, I worked with them at their Wallops Island facility. They were dreadful in terms of keeping to schedules and providing resources they committed to provide. They didn’t have a very good reputation with the military at the time, being more project than mission oriented. There’s a reason everyone fought to hold on to their expendable launch vehicles rather than depend on all the promised shuttle missions.

Giving NASA a military role would be the equivalent of waging war through a faculty committee of a liberal arts college. They’re great at promoting themselves, though.

As for names, I vote for Stormtroopers (they would be the SEALs of the Skies) and Skywalkers (they would be the peacekeeping force).

Obviously they are guardians of the galaxy. Where are you people and your popular culture references?

When I see what Hollywood has done to Marvel characters, I want to weep.

Poor poor Howard the Duck.

Poor poor Howard the Duck.

Reduced to a puppet. But still less degraded than Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk.

Why is it necessary to have this as a military role?

Why is it necessary to have this as a military role?

Something about "the high ground", and "potential energy", I think.

Why is it necessary to have this as a military role?

Maintaining and deploying space-based assets for communication, navigation and surveillance, and negating the enemy’s assets for those purposes. Detecting and tracking enemy missile launches, and stopping them in the boost or orbital stages. Supporting the operations of the other branches. All these missions seem to me to be within the military’s responsibilities.

I had an image of the new space program exploring space, the final frontier. It might be asking too much, but I could also go with Intragalactic Explorers.
