This is it! This is the day matters - so much is at stake today regarding the future direction of this country.
It is within the grasp of Georgia to rebuke and renounce the shtick of the Disastrous Hair Disastrous Loser Years and move onto saner, more solid ground.
Let us hope that Georgians take this seriously and truly MAGA by giving DEMS the two disputed seats. Human life depends on it.
I'll be working a long turnaround day today and so.won't be able to keep up with the news from GA.....hoping for DEMS to win, for all of us. Where I live most people grasp how important these races are even if across the country. Rob

I fear the Senate is going to flip to democratic and I don’t like that one bit.Well I'll just have to agree to disagree. Myself, my SO, my family, my friends, my neighbors, the zip code, city, County and State I live in? All deserve better than what GOP control has proven itself to be the past four years. It is time for Georgia once again assume a pivotal role in US History as in 1864 and cast the GOP out. Georgians deserve better than the past four years, too. Rob

I am totally rooting for a Democratic result too Rob!!Thank You! I know a few folks who moved to Macon, GA two years ago. I sent them an email and they told me Georgia is taking this seriously and people are voting. They told me energy is high and things are looking as if a thin but good enough margin to win for DEMS. We'll see.
Where the GOP screwed up, according to this couple? Stinginess with the relief checks, the phone call to the Secretary of State, and one of the GOP Senate candidates blasting the entirely legal recording of DJT's call - makes the GOP look even more like authoritarian slimeballs.
Hopefully their take carries the day! What is important here is suburban Atlanta voting in Cobb and Gwinnett and a few other populous close-in Counties. Rob

Being stingy with the stimulus was a bad move this close to the election. I know that the logistics aren’t feasible but I wish that the money could have only went to people that were impacted by Covid instead of everyone. We shouldn’t have gotten it but my kids last worked in March and are living on savings and unemployment. Even with unemployment running out they are good until July and I am sure they will be back to work by then.
Joe can get more votes offering cash to to everyone. In a close race it will probably make a difference.
At least that what he said in his rally. $2000 for your vote.

I am aware you are not in dire need of a $2k check/direct deposit. Cool beans for you that you don't experience fear of hunger and fear of being cast out on the streets by Global Capitalism.
Point? You can afford to view this proposed 2K as a bribe - and even I'd agree that the timing speaks for itself. Further point? Millions of Americans can't afford to view this 2K as a bribe - it's a lifeline to basic survival.
Such persons and yourself? Truly do not live in the same America. Rob

Watching the long lines at food banks for people never needing it before are heartbreaking. People who begrudge the poor getting a little money are the same ones having no problems with very rich paying very little in taxes, etc.

Someone once wrote that a democracy progresses through the following sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith, from spiritual faith to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, from dependence back into bondage.
Threads such as this make be think our democracy has reached the apathy stage and will soon transition to dependence. I just can't imagine why anyone thinks that's a good thing.

You would be surprised at how much money you can make and still experience the fear, that it could all turn on a dime no matter what one does. I was talking with boyfriend how I went to bed Monday night thinking about how much of my life has been dominated by economic fear and he knows the same only from childhood (my childhood was fine economically, I never worried because middle class actually meant something back then though I heard plenty of stories about the Great Depression, but he was raised by a single mother due to divorce). No, we haven't done everything right, those cookie cutter stepford people who do everything right, what paradise do they come from? But heaven knows I do *some* things right (though I never sought to marry rich or anything like that, I've never been conniving like that).
Not sure how much I agree, but I do appreciate the theory described by Alan.
One could use Rome and Greece as examples. One could use China as an argument against it, perhaps, as I think China has some freedom a few thousand years ago, at least as must as Germany did prior to the Holy Roman Empire.
Anyway to get back on track -
In relation to this theory and others like it, I’m not sure we can do much about it. It’s big picture, several hundred years long, empire level stuff. If the theory is correct, we will go through these stages over great lengths of time as a large society. Our individual opinions about it don’t really matter. And I don’t think we have much effect on the big picture either.
So then the question remains: “how shall we live our lives if the above is true?”
So then the question remains: “how shall we live our lives if the above is true?”I think the answer is to resist dependence by rejecting politicians and parties who's stated goal is to provide for you.

I think the answer is to resist dependence by rejecting politicians and parties whose unstated but clearly acted on goal is to dominate anyone who disagrees with them, by any means necessary.
Good question, happystuff. And to clarify - I'm not talking about RESISTING by any means necessary ( I hope it does not come to that!!), but that the party currently desperately trying to keep executive power is willing to use any means necessary.
I fear the Senate is going to flip to democratic and I don’t like that one bit.
I wish the Senate would flip to Republican. I don't see many Republicans around these days though, just Trumpists.

Maybe it's just me, but I think the past four years have been chaotic and nightmarish so I am ready for any sort of change in a different direction. We tend to blame politicians on either side for everything but I don't find parties to be much different. Maybe ideologically but in the end, all that seems to matter to either party anymore is money, power and corporate wishes. And I think we the people are just as much to blame for what we tolerate and how ignorant we've become.

Yes. And look what happened to the Republic

The answer could be found anywhere on the continuum in your theory. Depending on a person’s opinions, they could work toward a goal anywhere on the continuum.
I’m not sure it would have much effect, if this continuum is hundreds of years long and covers an empire.

I celebrate being in the last glory days of the empire. If it’s all downhill from here,
it is goid to be old.
The new highly contagious strain of covid has been identified in Georgia. The election will be a superspreader event and reporters who could work remotely but insist on going out to the polls to interview people will hop on planes and spread it around the country. Biden and Trump and their staffers who went down to campaign will hop on planes and spread it around the country.

YES! YES! YES! Less covid related homelessness and hunger truly seem to be within America's grasp as the Senate is on the vergebof flipping blue. Oh happy day!!!
And I need to truly thank outgoing DJT fir being so insane and utterly self centered. Without his extremely inappropriate behavior of late, this may not have been possible. We are talking of the vote against your best interests Deep South here. Rob

I haven't heard the analysis of the talking heads yet, but I wonder if Trump shot the GOP in the foot with all his election antics. So long Mitch? That would be incredible! To have Mitch McConnell suffer a humiliating defeat for all the suffering and hunger he is directly responsible for. The tide does seem to be turning in favor of human rights. Rob
So long Mitch?
Mitch isn't going anywhere and will continue his obstructions. He can't however keep a bill from being discussed.
I'm watching the rally to "Save America" on C-SPAN. There is a long roster of speakers, including Trump at some point today, and the following, while not minuscule, is not exactly the March on Washington.
I wonder if this whole thing will generate a third party offshoot of the GOP--kind of like a Tea Party back in the 2000s. Then the real GOP can get back to business.
Mitch McConnell has been a giant bolus of obstruction for years. I'm so glad to see him sidelined. He almost makes me believe in David Ickes' reptilian fantasies.
I have an ambitious dream that some day we'll get money out of politics and our elected officials will be chosen to respect the Constitution and serve the people.
I don't believe "both sides do it" , and I don't know how anyone can, given the stark difference between the parties today. I hope it's not too late in the game to save the democratic republic from "patriots."

We can all take solace in this after all the suffering this man is directly responsible for. Rob

Lordy, I hope so. The Tea Party and Grover Norquist have almost destroyed the country. The Lincoln Project is doing their best to target Republicans who embrace such divisiveness; I have the greatest respect for them.

Has the Senate ever been split down the middle before? I would think that made selecting a majority leader problematic.

I think they’ll still be a factor as long as the 60 vote rule remains in place.

Seems to me that half a dozen moderate Republican senators along with half a dozen moderate Democrat senators could really have a fun time this coming year.
Romney's taking the heat for his moderate stand; he was greeted by people shouting "traitor" at an airport recently.
I'm no fan of his--I won't forget his assertion that Democratic voters are all moochers, not to mention the traveling dog caper--but he's been a rare voice of reason lately--maybe he's channeling his father.
Looks like the second seat will go to the Democrats as well. We’ll get to see what wonders they can perform.

Streets paved with gold? A chicken in a pot for everyone? $2,000 for each American, but why so low? Why not $10,000?
Really, there are no limits, let’s go for it.
No surprise medical billing, covid relief, infrastructure. With both chambers and the White House the Democrats could go bold but they won't. Like the Republicans they are too beholden to special interests.
ETA And DACA.

There are never any limits when it comes to tax breaks for the rich or wasteful and often useless war materiel, so why shouldn't the government allocate money for infrastructure, COVID relief, environmental measures, etc.?

Hopefully they’ll start with investigating why security was so woefully inadequate at the capitol today. Anyone who isn’t comatose was concerned that what ended up happening was going to happen. There should have been blm level security and we need to learn who made the decisions to not have it.

Apparently you can take over a joint session of Congress and subvert the US government with far less effort than your average Gerard Butler "The ____ Has Fallen" movie leads us to believe.
I'd always assumed there were layers of security not normally on public display. Certainly I have seen such layered deployments of resources in Sweden, Norway, and the UK.

The streets paved with gold could be attached to an infrastructure bill. While a chicken in every pot might offend vegan constituents, pot in every pipe would seem to be doable. Now that modern monetary theory has established that deficits don’t matter, payments will be limited only by what the bond market will tolerate. And if need be the bond market can always be regulated to taste.
And we can thank republicans for teaching us that deficits don’t matter. So maybe there is something good about republicans after all!
I fear that some republicans are gonna be bummed when they learn that democratic control of everything means that selfie’s with the cops ‘protecting’ the capitol are no longer on offer.
There is no shortage of blame on both sides, not that the excesses of either excuses those of the other. But if only a fraction of the planned new spending materializes we will see levels of new debt that become truly horrific.

The amount of debt incurred by the trump administration has spiraled....

The US trade defiicit jumped to $68.1 billion in November, the highest monthly deficit in 14 years as a surge in imports overwhelmed a smaller increase in exports, the Commerce Department said Thursday.

I don't know how spending will pan out, especially with all the stimulus packages, but I'd think it's almost a given that there will be more revenue from higher taxes on the wealthy.
