View Full Version : I Learned Another New Word Today
I was commenting on some of the inaugural coverage to my kid yesterday. The kid thought it was joyous, while I thought it was fawning. Nothing new there.
But when I went on about the obsequious media purring over Bernie’s mittens, the fashion choices of various politicians and their kids and the general wonderfulness of the players, my kid said “That’s just celebritization”. I had never heard that word before, but it seemed to make sense in the context.

My Canadian friend commented that Justin and Joe were going to "chinwag" today. I never heard that before but, it too, makes sense in the context.

I love Bernie and his mittens! :)

Some people were trying to be celebrities, others like Sanders may have been made so by the media but I doubt could really give a fig about what they are wearing. Of course no woman running for Prez could have been as indifferent to their appearance as Sanders is, that's male privilege, but still no need to show off.
Somebody said his garb was true Vermont. If it was, I approve.
OH Idahl, you are going to have so much fun learning from the kid. I don't how or when it happens but the kid will be giving you needed advice one day. ;)
“That’s just celebritization”.Upon reflection, isn't that the basis of all modern politics?

Since JFK, anyway. But when you hear CNN gushing about Harris’ stepdaughter as a “breakout fashion star”, you have to wonder if it’s gone too far.

I understand Justin has some concerns about Biden shutting down Keystone and the available of COVID vaccine he wants to discuss.

I look to the future with pride and not a little fear.
Bernie was definitely being Bernie. And very practical given the weather there yesterday. And appropriately socially distanced... I've loved some of the memes that have placed him all over the planet (and universe).

Don't Vermonters know enough to wear hats? Especially follicly-challenged Vermonters? :)
Personally I hate hats. When I lived in the cold world I much preferred ear muffs. And maybe a hood.

Hoods are the best!

This made me laugh. I am joining Idahl in learning new word combos - follicly-challenged - so politically correct!:laff:

Here was the article in VT Digger. (https://vtdigger.org/2021/01/20/bernie-sanders-vermont-made-inaugural-mittens-heat-up-the-internet/) I was so enchanted by this story.
(I have a pair of repurposed wool sweater mittens made by a Vermont crafter myself--but mine are a lumberjack plaid. They're super warm!)

That sounds like media speak for a pimply faced kid.

I so agree! And pockets! Gotta have pockets in any clothing piece possible.
(Geesh - I read that and I think I'm starting to turn into my grandmother! But then that's not too bad. LOL)

I don’t like hoods at all because they don’t stay up and they don’t really keep my ears warm. I like a head wrap around my ears I don’t need an entire hat or a head covering.
The thing about pockets is they’re dangerous when you have ice around. One of the cute things about my elderly parents was that they would, when they’re going out in the winter, remind each other to keep their hands out of their pockets.
You need your hands out to balance yourself if you start to fall.

Totally get the "hands out of pockets" for ice and balance, etc. I like pockets for the storage - LOL. If I ever find a really good sale on cargo pants and shorts - watch out! :D

Well, I have heard it said that politics is show business for homely people. Even in this insert-glamour-here age

Personally, I don’t see why Bernie’s socialist chic couldn’t extend to ear flaps. Surely he could find a mad bomber hat somewhere in his three houses. They even have a chin strap for windy days.
Mittens aren’t all that popular where I live. They like to keep the trigger finger free.

One of my young relatives informed me last August that the Girl Scouts were updating their uniform and the new one has better pockets.
According to the New Yawk Times https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/25/fashion/new-girl-scout-uniform.html
"A vest designed for the modern Girl Scout must have pockets, and those pockets must be large enough to fit the largest model of the iPhone." And the diagonal sash now has "a hidden iPhone-size pocket, too."
Apparently one of the big complaints about the previous uniform was that it didn't have enough pockets.
The new uniform also includes a denim jacket like us bikers wear. :+1:

Two words: cargo pants.
Two words: cargo pants.
I could only agree more if you included cargo shorts. I’m sure SO cringes that I wear them 7 days a week but I’m not as concerned about their lack of fashionability.

LL Bean makes serious hoods that stay up.

Interesting - and you were right, I was seeing a paywall where none existed. :)

You need your hands out to balance yourself if you start to fall.
When you feel yourself starting to slip, squat down. Doing an intentional controlled collapse straight down avoids the danger of your feet flying out from under you, which might result in you doing a face plant or banging the back of your head on the ground by landing flat on your back. It also lowers your center of gravity, so even if you just halfway squat you head will be falling from a lower height.
And of course it helps if you practice doing a quick controlled squat occasionally so your brain will react instinctively when your feet slip.

If you ever run into a real paywall, just delete the nytimes.com and nyt.com cookies from your browser and it should go away.
Other tricky non-paywall message boxes I've run into are:
A please-subscribe message where the X that makes it go away is the same color as the background. You can't see the X, but clicking the upper-right corner of the message makes it go away.
A message where the X that makes it go away is on a transparent background outside of the message box and, in one case, a couple of inches away from it.
A message box that had the X in the upper-left corner.
A box that didn't care where you clicked. Clicking anywhere outside of the message box would make it go away.
My pet peeve on message boxes is the ads that pop up (mainly on financial sites) advertising one of their additional services. Usually you can't get rid of them by clicking the corner and there are only two buttons: "Tell Me More" and "Remind Me Later". There should be a law that requires those ads to have a button that says "____ you and the horse you rode in on!" >:(

I will get around to my new word I learned today, but first I would like to brag about the Tough Mitts that I wore on my walk in the forest today. I bought them out of the bin of seconds at the Stormy Kromer factory in Ironwood Michigan 3 summers ago. If they have a defect, I have never been able to sense it.
http://www.stormykromer.com/tough-mitts
The new word I learned today is cwtch, which is Welsh for cuddle, pronounced "kootch". Cwtch is contained in the lyrics of a wonderful lullaby, written by John Wake and Lorraine King, titled Cariad, which is a Welsh word for sweetheart. In the link Siobhan Owen sings and plays harp, and one can read the lyrics. The moon and stars are yours tonight, safe and sound with me... (I recognize that feeling!) If the link below does not work, it should be possible to search Youtube for Cariad.

"Like a little bit of knowledge, a little bit of Welsh can get you into trouble." LLOL <wink>
