View Full Version : Drink water each morning before you drink anything else

I recently read an article about habits that suggested drinking a glass of water first thing every morning. That's a good idea:
Most people are a slightly dehydrated when they first wake up because it's been 8-10 hours since they drank anything.
Most people start their day with coffee, tea, a soft drink, or orange juice. All of those are acidic and drinking a glass of water first acts as a buffer between that acidity and your stomach by diluting whatever you drink during breakfast.
By drinking water first, your thirst is partially satisfied and you're less tempted to drink too much coffee, tea, juice, or soft drink.
I do exactly that, George. A glass of water with a slice of citrus--either lemon or lime.
"Too much coffee" - those are all English words, but in that order, make no sense!

:-)I know where you're coming from. I don't drink coffee, but I'd drink Pepsi Cola while I'm asleep if someone would hold the bottle for me. ;)
I always heard drink water after your coffee to rinse the acidity off your teeth so when you brush the acid isn't rubbed into the enamel.

:) I'm with you there. I drink the water before the coffee, but not to fill up and drink less coffee.

Not a coffee drinker. Does it matter that my grandmother preferred "church coffee" (grounds third day of use, aka mostly water)?

A while back I would make a morning cocktail of water, aloe vera juice and a spoonful of honey. Any benefit was subtle, but it seems like a good idea to revisit.
I've been good about doing this. I have a pill to take an hour or more before meals, so when i get up in the early morning...I take the pill with a full glass of water. But, I LIKE water and really only drink it and coffee. I've added milk to my morning as I am trying to get more calcium. I then chase it with water and coffee!
I do this every morning, then eat a small breakfast at work an hour or two later. The water is left out, covered, overnight so it's room temperature. In Chinese medicine, cold liquids aren't good for your body. I too only drink water; my other beverage is a small amount of milk during the day.

I drink a full glass first thing with a med, too. Follow with coffee and breakfast in about half an hour. Trying to drink more water during the day. I've started drinking flavored sparking water at lunch (e.g., La Croix) just to make me feel special. :-)
