View Full Version : San Francisco
So I see the SF school board hasn’t been wasting it’s time in this challenging plague era. They are attempting to purge unworthy names from their schools. Washington, Lincoln, John Muir, Diane Feinstein and other such villains. I also read an article by a SF teacher objecting to Bernie’s mittens as a display of white privilege. I wonder who is left in the annals of human history who would be acceptable to our new puritans. Che Guevara? Lenin? Lennon? Or perhaps just use numbers, as in People’s Education Facility Number 226.

Stupid and a waste of money. Those people were a product of their times.
Maybe we should get sponsorship dollars for public education from Big Business. Maybe having Citibank School or Nissan Grammar would be less offensive than naming schools after fallible human beings. Plus we could get private money for the educational system. I'm surprised Betsy DeVos didn't think of that.

I think that like me, he's simply amused by such high profile foolishness, although I'll admit it's a shame historical purges are becoming so popular.

As Elvis Costello once sang, “I used to be disgusted, now I’m just amused”.
When you see a city that has trouble keeping human waste off its streets arguing over whether Daniel Webster and Robert Louis Stevenson are too morally deficient to name a school after, you have to wonder if we’ve reached peak frivolity yet.
These times call out for a new Tom Wolfe.
OOOPS, I thought Idahl had visited SF and was talking about his experience. I loved my visit to SF!

It's completely stupid, it's also relatively unimportant in the scheme of things. What's in a name am I right?
But in this challenging pandemic era, I think San Francisco actually handled the pandemic pretty well, Northern CA is not why California had a pandemic surge afaik.
When I last went to San Francisco it was lovely. Work paid for it, ha got hotels I wouldn't have shelled out for. And I just wondered why we can't have nice things like they do there. But then I couldn't afford that rent so maybe that's why.

SFO has a big homeless problem. Feces all over the place. I have a friend who lives in the area and she posts lots of local photos and articles.
Here’s a NYT article on the school renaming thing. Really, doesn’t the SFO school board have more important things to concentrate on. I’ve made no secret of the fact I lean right (mostly moderate), so it’s entertaining when protected classes clash and libs fight amongst themselves.

If we were really serious about eliminating every reference to alleged racists or individuals/institutions who engaged in the subjugation of others through past transgressions, shouldn't we start with the Democratic Party? I would think that if we're not willing to go all in, we're just virtue signalling.
I see the SF city government is suing the school board to compel them to submit and execute a plan for re-opening. This may distract from the important work of removing Paul Revere’s cursed name from its schools.
I’m surprised we haven’t had a thread about San Francisco’s weather underground DA.

More SFO weirdness.

Ok- if you aren’t interested in the part about the gay dad with mixed race kids not being diverse enough for an advisory board appointment- keep reading. It gets better.
The SF school board voted to remove admission selection from Lowell High School and make it admission by lottery because of whatever -ism and discrimination they went with. This school is 83% POC, with a student body comprised of academically gifted students who do not have the means for private school. Less than 17% of the students are white.

FWIW, San Francisco International Airport, designated as SFO, is not involved in any of these issues. (It’s not even in the City limits).
SFO does not have a homeless problem- they regularly run people out who do not have tickets for flights.
It is the City and County of San Francisco (yes, they are exactly the same), sometimes referenced as SF, that is in the news lately for the issues with the schools.
Sorry if I appear nitpicking, but improper attributions confuse communications, and grate on my nerves.
People with school age kids who can afford to either leave San Francisco (there are a number of districts in the area that are noted for their quality) or send their kids to private schools. Personally I don’t know anyone with kids attending the SF unified schools. The stats I’ve read is that something like 28% of school age kids are white in SF (lower than the 40-ish % of all SF residents.) but less than half of white school age kids in SF attend public schools. Anecdotally I’ve heard that it’s mainly the lottery method of selecting schools that drives their parents to find alternatives.
Personally I disagree with the district’s recent decision regarding Lowell. Most likely the result will be to drive more Asian American families that can afford it to move out of the city since the school currently has over 50% Asian American students, which is somewhat higher than the 40ish% that Asian Americans represent in the whole population.

Wound a bit too tight?
Habit carried over from working with air freight for years. MKE is Milwaukee. CLE is Cleveland. MSP is Minneapolis-St Paul. And so on. Means the city as well as the airport.
Tradd, So should we start to abbreviate Chicago by calling it ORD? Or MDW?
I understand NYC is also considering a lottery system for its gifted and talented schools to change the shading of student bodies. Vonnegut’s Handicapper General would be proud.
Tradd, So should we start to abbreviate Chicago by calling it ORD? Or MDW?
Just call it O'Hara, like the Boss did.

A few years ago I visited San Francisco. I experienced an international orchid show. I walked this and that neighborhood. I viewed the Lunar New Year Parade from the second floor of the Sir Francis Drake Hotel. I spent a day in Grace Cathedral, and now in my sunporch I can still gaze upon a brass replica of the labyrinth on which I walked there. These were some of the most delightful days of my life.
I was "just visiting". I did not need to be concerned with the problems that residents of SF are coming to grips with politically. But from a distance I wish them well.
One article I read said that there are problems, and then there are First World problems, and then there are San Francisco problems.

We used to go to San Fran every year and found it great. 4 years ago it was disgusting. It reeked of urine, so dirty and homelessness has exploded. As a nation we need housing for them. It’s become a big problem in states that are warmer. Our rents have skyrocketed and so have the homeless. Our mayor and city council love that all the crappy motels have been tore down but that’s where the poor people lived. Upscale condos for the rich are now downtown for the wealthy from California. Empty lots are eyesores too as Jacobs entertainment ran out of money and never built his upscale housing after tearing down the motels. Ugh!
