View Full Version : Follow up on LVP floors

Well, when we actually got to the new house, it became apparent that putting a lot of money into this house right now is not a good idea. So I have embraced the floors that we have. I have decided to love the solarium in the kitchen because it is 70's appropriate and I am exploring a 70's vibe in my decorating. I have repainted the already painted pumpkin pine floors that I wanted to refinish, since we could not live here and refinish the floors at the same time. I have used old cans of paint I had from the old house, so that was a win from the recycling standpoint.

I am using antique oriental rugs that I already owned, and buying a few more. So I am out the cost of the new rugs, which is less than buying lvp would have been, the rugs are really beautiful, and I can a. take them with us if and when we leave and b. leave the rugs to my granddaughters when I die. The 3 year old already said she loved the rug because she liked looking at the patterns.

So this is a way better solution than lvp for many reasons.

New dining room rug, will cover painted floor so chairs don't gouge it:

The rug is beautiful!!

Do you have a before and after of the floor painting project? My pine floors are in terrible shape, and I'm tempted to paint, but I'm reluctant to paint over natural pine. Plus, how do you seal the paint so it doesn't chip and wear over time with foot traffic? I've seen whitewashed pine in cottage decorating magazines but I'd be so afraid it would look terrible in a short amount of time with scuffs and chips

I love old Persian rugs!

I guess LVP is Le Vinyl Plank? A French product, haha.

Luxury Vinyl Plank (along with its cousin, LVT, Luxury Vinyl Tile). The "Luxury" part is that the tiles are considerably thicker than ordinary sheet vinyl or vinyl tiles, there often is some sort of texture to the floor, and the patterns tend to be more lifelike (better pictures, longer pattern repeats, etc.). Better warranties, too, in most cases.

You also could have painted the rug and put feet on those chairs.:~)

Rugs can be nice, my experience though is with those that use too many, in such a way they become a trip hazzard (by doors that catch on them, etc).

Well it sure sounds like my solution does not appeal to you, Toomuchstuff. Maybe others will find it sounds better to them or might apply to their situation.

Catherine, I am trying to get a picture so I can post it but my phone does not like this house very much and I am having problems doing that from here. I'll keep trying.

I have rocking chairs and Breuer chairs so felt chair feet aren't really an option, unfortunately.

I am not sure about your point about natural pine bleeding through. These floors have been painted for at least 60 years, given what I am seeing, so I'm just throwing down a new coat without worrying about it. I think I primed one of them, but not two others.

I used exterior house paint, semigloss because that is what I saw they did in a Country Living article. So far so good, but don't really know how it will hold up.

I love rugs, but to TMS's point, DH shuffles and is constantly pulling up a rug or tripping over it, and he complains to no end. And my rugs have NO nap. I need to look for some kind of tape to hold them down. But I like them because, as I said, my floors could be in better condition and rugs are a great way to hide the worst parts. On the other hand, they also warm up the look of the house and add character and define living areas.

It’s a beautiful rug. I used to love area rugs over floors. Then I got little dogs that are paid trained and think any rug is a pee pad. I had to get rid of all my rugs.

Sounds like rugs would not work in your house, either, then. The painted floors do show scuffs and chips, in my experience.
So for your situation, the luxury vinyl plank might actually be more appealing and workable for you.

They stand up very well under dog nails, which is another reason I was leaning towards them.

Lots of beautiful lvp, if you don't want rugs and you don't want to risk painting the pine, that's for sure!

We did not have the time or the resources for this house.

Tybee, What a great solution! Painting an already painted floor with the paint available appeals to me. I've used exterior paint on our interior windows and am quite glad I did. The rug is lovely. I would prefer painted wood to LVP.

I admit, getting rid of the darned paint that I had been carrying around was a big part of the appeal to me, too. I had bought a whole gallon of something 6 years ago when we were painting our house, and then decided I didn't like it--it's a very light sky blue--so we used that in the bedroom, and it's really serene. If it chips, we can touch it up.

I agree!
Tybee, my "reading chair" is a rocking chair and I didn't want it to scratch up the floors. I looked online for a solution and learned that the soft side of a strip of Velcro tape could be applied along the runners. That has been working very well for a couple of years now. I mention this in case you decide you want to place a rocking chair somewhere that you don't have a rug.

Brilliant!!! I will try this today, as I have rockers in the living room and no enough rug, and want to put one in the bedroom!

That is totally brilliant. If anyone in your house actually likes to rock perhaps as a gag one day you could put the non-soft part of the Velcro on the floor under the runner.

I think this is where I saw it:
