I know that I am fat because I eat too much. When I cut down on eating I lose weight. But man oh man, does metabolism ever play a role in this.
I’m living with a small dog who eats as much as my big dog. She is 30 pounds and he is 60 pounds. He eats a normal amount for a dog of his size, 2 cups a day. She eats the same amount.
Damn, if only I could bottle her metabolism to sell, I would be an overnight billionaire. She doesn’t exercise at all, she sleeps all day.

Yes it does and it gets slower as you age. To maintain my weight loss I can only eat 1600 calories a day. I am no longer fat for the first time in 12 years. I also walk 2 miles a day.
Maybe it's also what you eat and not just how much?
A doctor once told a relative they had the metabolism of a dead person. I laughed because I had said the same thing of myself.
But if there's ever a worldwide famine, we'll survive to have the last laugh.
My metabolism is the only thing I miss about being a teenager.

Well, that too.

I don't weight much different than as a teenager, however I was never a particularly skinny teenager.
I have been trying to eat 1400 calories a day (I am a small person) and try to walk at least 5 miles 4 days a week and 2.5 miles the other days. M_W_F try to do aerobics, weights or bands instead of taking the second walk. I would do better if I could go to the gym. Thinking I may go to a class 2x a week when I get the second vaccine shot. This is my aim but the cold weather waylays the best of plans. I don't think I have gained a lot in the past year but my body has shifted. I blame that on stress???? I feel a bit calmer now that there is no longer constant tweeting and wondering what other destructive things can happen. My heart has not been "acting up" as much either.
Here lately, I am constantly hungry. Not just bored hungry but stomach clawing hungry every few hours. Not putting on weight though so not too worried. I honestly think it is the cold temperature and my hyperactive ways - can't sit still. On that topic, DH and I have a joke about the beet test - how long the evidence shows up after eating beets. For him, it is a matter of hours and for me, two days. Obviously, he either has a much shorter gut system or our metabolisms are very different.
No matter what diet I try I backslide to the point where I hit the weight my mother was when she was my age. Metabolism or genetics?
Maybe it's also what you eat and not just how much?
My PCP said, in general, women need to cut back on carbs as we age. dammit!

I weight less than my mother and grandmother did (probably just means I'll get osteoporosis, I mean they were/are long lived, so obesity didn't harm their lifespans, maybe helped for all I know)
With me the thing is that even though I can bring my weight below it, my weight always returns to my teenage weight, but like I say I was a chubby teenager, so I think that is kind of the setpoint.
I know the genetics is for average weight via genetic testing. And I am pretty average.
I agree that genetics probably plays a part. In SO’s family, of the five kids three are big like their father and always have been and the other two are skinny as rails, like their mother. From what I’ve seen the eating habits of all of them are similar.

Yppej, it sounds like that is your set point.

I've seen that time and time again. Struggling against your genes is generally a losing battle.
When I was younger--up through my 40s I couldn't give blood because I didn't hit the minimum weight requirement (110lb) I gained weight slowly and insidiously over the next two decades. The difference in my general weight depends on how much alcohol and carbs I consume and the variance is about 20 lbs.
All of the women in my family--mother, grandmothers, aunts are all ectomorphs. I do have a couple of inches to pinch these days, but when I exercise it's for health, not weight loss. I'm relatively satisfied with where I am right now, even though I'm definitely eligible to give blood! No ambiguity there.
I have a good metabolism still, thankfully. I weighed 98 lbs for most of my adult life, and I only went up as high as 108 after smoking cessation and menopause. I'm 5'2", so the 108 is a fine weight for me. I'm usually a little under that, so not looking to lose any pounds, although I have been trying to eat more healthy foods for overall health benefits.
I have more energy than I know what to do with....when I wake then by evening....I wilt! I so wish I could balance my energy. Mom was a plump lady. I look exactly like her, but for weight.
I have always been thinner or ok weight, However the scale god ruled my life. My weight always stayed at 118-120/5'5", I am life long vegetarian of the ripe age of almost 60. Last September the stress of a the year of Covid, dad passing and a whopping 6 hernia repair, my weight tumbled to 111. I stopped running and ate a very strict diet of healthy meals no junk at all, I watched carbs to the T, I was scared I had hurt myself and wanted full health back. I had a terrible time gaining weight, I never thought I would say that. I am just this week back to 117.
SO my thoughts are eating a healthy diet make it terribly hard to gain weight. Along with carb intake played a big part for me. I feel better and am back to running.
When I was younger I too could not donate blood because I weighed too little. Later that problem went away :) but I still couldn't because my blood pressure is low.
The one good thing that could happen if I get covid (or get it again - may have already had it like 30% of the US population) is I might lose some weight.
