Physical Spiritual/Prayer Labyrinths

There is an outdoor prayer labyrinth at White's Chapel UMC in Southlake Tx (Sort of near DFW airport)

For those not familiar with spiritual labyrinths: This is a labyrinth, not a maze. A twisting path makes it's way from the outside to the center. There are no dead ends or wrong turns. The intent is for people to walk it slowly doing walking meditation or whatever spiritual practice you prefer. If you want to, you can pick up a stone at the entrance and carry it to the center to symbolize the burden you want to get rid of. You can also pick up a different stone in the center and carry it back out to the entrance to symbolize you sending spiritual help to the person who left that stone in the center of the labyrinth.

The labyrinth in Southlake is located in a small patch of woods between a church and a large cemetery. It is made of rectangular stones about 6 inches tall.

The photo below of a different labyrinth shows how narrow the paths are. Like this one, the Southlake labyrinth is too narrow for handicapped access.

Someone I know (more than an acquaintance; not quite a close friend) creates these, typically as popups (that is, not intended to be permanent installations). I'm a big fan of walking meditation, but I've never done that in one of her labyrinths (or anyone else's, for that matter).

We have several outdoor labyrinths here in my city. And we have a New Years Day indoor labyrinth walk at my workplace (Presbyterian church) that has been going on for some years. It's pretty popular; folks come in to set their intentions for the year.

I have done that on one built on open space right in town where I could take Noki to walk off leash. Not a lot of people knew about it. Sadly the land was sold, fenced off and now houses going up.

I remembered reading about labyrinths some years earlier on SLF so looked up the threads. I still have not visited one. Hmmm, that might be a good low-key project for 2021.

I was able to walk on in Indiana that was just mown into the grass. it was lovely. I did another in Virginia at a lavender farm- small. One in Frederick, MD behind a church and another one indoors in Ocean City, Md church. We have a meadow in the back where I thought of putting one, but...husband wants it mown regularly and we've hired a person to do the mowing and I'm too lazy to plot and organize. So I just walk around the perimeter and then through the middle. My husband makes sure the path is clear. I love the idea of them and when that lavender farm's gets older I'm sure it will be exquisite.
