View Full Version : Projects between now and Summer Solstice
I like the threads Chicken Lady used to start of projects to be completed in a span of a few months, so I'm going to start one. Please join in if you'd like!
These are the things I need to accomplish:
Wash screens, windows, curtains & shades
Clean up, shred and mulch garden beds with fallen leaves
Sand, prime and paint kitchen cupboard (remember my cupboard?)
Clean closet and cull unloved clothing
Fertilize garden beds
I've already gotten a good start with the windows, etc. I also got kitchen floor and wall samples tested for asbestos (none present), so that removes one barrier from us making some progress on the eternal kitchen project.
Get my second dose of the covid vaccine.
Once I am fully vaccinated go to the dentist. I have already started to look for a new dentist after I fired the old one for calling up family members who they were not authorized to contact and tattling on me that I was not going to the dentist during a pandemic.
Once I have a new dentist in place follow up with the state licensing agency on my complaint against the old dentist.
Plant garden.
Celebrate Mother's Day and Father's Day.
Dependent on son:
Get security cameras installed
Get tree cut
Get furnace cleaned
Get electrician in

Rosa, where did you get the samples tested for asbestos?

Thought you are supposed to report Hipaa violations within 180 days? Also, that wouldn't be a state thing.

I reported it at the time and received a letter acknowledging receipt of my letter but nothing since.

Tybee: We used these folks: http://www.proscience.net/home.html. We had 3 samples and it cost $50. per sample to test them. We got results within 48 hours via e-mail. We dropped our samples off, but it looks like they can also be mailed. You can probably find something closer to you though; this place is in Woburn, MA.

I know you talked about that dentist call when it happened, but I’m still shaking my head about it. That is pretty crazy.
Figure out what to do about this house, and other house in Michigan.
Get Mother settled in new facility.
Get a physical and get started working on some of these medical issues.

Those are big challenges to get done. Wishing well on getting them all resolved and restoring your peace of mind. It is a difficult period getting through a lot of issues at one time. Virtual hugs!!!
Thanks, Razz, so much appreciate the virtual hugs!
This morning we just decided to sell this particular house in Maine, so that is one big decision reached!

Tybee - are you looking for another home in Maine? I would LOVE to live "up East"!
By Solstice:
* have caterer menu set up and handout materials gathered for reunion we are "hosting" for our international family association
* spend at least 30 hours on our upstairs shoving-crap-around project
* find someone to fix the kitchen roof (this is difficult - it's a strange roofline that has been cut into/added onto etc and most roofers don't like old houses that aren't straight runs)
* find someone/get quote for replacing a basement wall and tuckpointing part of the foundation

Don't know yet where we will end up. Still have not figured that out yet.

Get bids for replacing the bathroom sink and toilet. I decided to leave the low bathtub for now as I have no issues stepping over it. My friend’s husband is a contractor so he will put a build a door frame and install a door on the outside of the bathroom. He is also building a custom house and a house for himself so not sure when he will squeeze me in.
Tybee, if you have to hire a realtor I hope you get enough to cover the fee. I have lost money on real estate and it sucks. Do you not like the house or the location?
Yes, it will suck if that happens. But we do not like the location and cannot handle the repairs needed to the property, financially or physically, at our age.

Tybee, I am really sorry this house isn't working for you. I hope you find the perfect place soon.
As far as project progress goes, I have:
Washed all 28 screens
Washed 5 windows
Washed curtains for 5 windows
Spent a couple of hours on yard cleanup

Thanks, guys. It's like my dad used to say, sometimes you have to make a course adjustment. Trying not to freak out about it.
Different homes are part of what I have considered a refining process. Each home teaches one what is desirable and what is less so.
I came up with a list when I bought my present home based on the past experiences in no particular order.
- entry walkway easy to create a ramp if needed
- high ground after a home in a valley where rain flooded the street and the sump pump struggled in another home
- 2-car garage with no outside shed to rust or lean over time
- large entry way after saw my dad in a wheel chair
- paved driveway after struggling with snow removal on gravel drive
- new home on one floor to include ground floor laundry after laundry in basement
- small and private yard to garden coming from a farm. I did not want to live in a wooden fence cubicle as so many surveys are
- local builder after seeing the housing developments by out of town builders who disappear when finished leaving problems that never get fixed
- simple layout with three bedrooms as most being built today are 1 1/2 BR,
- 2 bathrooms on main floor
- gas fireplace for early frosty mornings as DH used to start wood fire in our fireplace before I got up
- no carpet or curtains - dirty, messy, dust traps especially with pets that shed
- living room facing to my backyard to avoid feeling like living in a goldfish bowl
- live in a diverse neighbourhood with families not a retirement community
- walkable to basic amenities - up to 2 km or 15 min walk
Upon the advice of my realtor, I looked at different areas to decide on the neighbourhood. I then looked online to see what was available. Saw one new little house listed which had been on the market for a while but it felt right to take a look. When my realtor phoned to tour houses, I asked to see this little house first. I showed him my list, it met every single one so submitted a modest offer, negotiated a little and it was mine. I love it!
The refining process guided the decision of what was important to me based on all our previous dwellings. I needed all those previous experiences so never felt that we made a mistake but a discovery or learning event.
Tybee, you will find your right place.

Razz, I also had a list this time with the most important being in a secure building not on the first floor. I got everything I wanted being on the 3rd floor facing the courtyard and away from the pool. As a bonus I am at the end so no one looks at my balcony. What I had to sack was laundry. There’s a small laundry room but I have a elevator and a cart so no big deal. Some secure buildings downtown have laundry in the unit but there I could only afford a one bedroom. Plus people have been complaining about the noise from partying and are trying to get something done unsuccessfully. Some secure buildings have no private outdoor space and that was a deal breaker.
I got an appointment with a new dentist but not until August, so it won't be by solstice. I had heard there is a backlog now that everyone is trying to go as covid has died down - I guess it is true.
Daughter's college graduation May 15 and reception on the 16th. Close on the sale of our house and purchase of a new one on May 24; move May 25. Study for 3rd certification exam scheduled for June 21.

Becky, tell us about the new house.

My first step (so far) will be to meet for tea/coffee with a friend who's a talented photographer and ask her if she'd be interested and ask her about others who might like to participate...she's better connected socially with creatives than I as I tend to be a somewhat retiring writer type--wanting to get out of my Covid isolation.
There are a couple of other creatives I'm thinking about inviting...feeling my way. Hoping for a congenial mix of kindred spirits..wanting to give--and get support.
A few years back, when I lived in the SF Bay area, I formed a women's salon called Camp Run-amuck and we had a lot of fun and far-ranging discussions! Now I live 3000 miles on the other coast and miss that support...
Your ideas & thoughts are most welcome...
I have thought about starting a discussion group using the Conversation Cafe model. I had a monthly coffee group until covid but found it was mostly a simple easy chat group of women about 3-5. While I enjoyed seeing them I was hoping for more indepth discussion so curious about how to approach doing so.

I called the Dental Board and was told they cannot give me any update. After the Board hears the matter I will get a letter in the mail. I asked the time frame and they said they are currently working on cases from 2019. So this is the second thing I'm attempting from my list that won't be resolved by summer solstice.

Well, I posted a couple months ago about how crazy the local real estate market is here - sellers were (are getting) way over asking price, etc. I decided to go ahead and list the house. We listed it for about $30K over what I would've hoped to get a year ago. We listed it on Monday April 12. we had 5 showing that evening; 5 more Tuesday and 5 Wednesday. We cut it off and posted that we'd look at offers Thursday evening. We got 3 good ones; 1 was $10K over asking; 1 was $14K over and one was $24.5K over, contingent upon splitting the price of a (much-needed) new roof. We went with number 3. That Tuesday evening while we had to be out of the house for showings, we looked at a duplex on the other side of town. It's a 3 bd, 3 ba, laundry on main floor. Two of the bedrooms and 2 of the bathrooms are on the main floor, too. There's a bedroom, bathroom and a loft upstairs. It's a bit smaller than what we have now, but that's fine.
The next morning, I told my Realtor to put an offer on it for full asking price, contingent upon the sale of our house and inspections - thinking we'll see what sticks. I was surprised that the seller accepted it! So, we're down in the weeds, getting stuff organized, utilities changed over, etc. Our Sellers asked us to pay for some repairs on the chimneys which we can agree to do.
I've really been practicing "letting go and letting God" through this entire process. Seems to be working, ha.
I really need to be studying for my exam!!

I always wondered how I could get a different house without selling mine first. Do you still put down a deposit on the new house? Is it 20%, or something less?
Teacher Terry

Ypejji, people may accept if yours is on the market or going on in a few days. Then you just put the acceptable deposit for your area. I put down 2k which was 1% of sale price.
The HOA painters are finishing up painting the outside of our building. Once they are done I plan to have a couple of insulation contractors come and advise how hard/expensive it would be to have insulation put in in our attic. What's up there now is a mess. And with summer coming it will be annoying to live with. Hopefully we can have that done by summer solstice or at least by July 4th.
DS told me he plans to get the furnace cleaned next week.

I need to add that one to my list for both my house and my mother's house. I also think some radiator valves might need to be replaced in both houses.

My son said he can replace the toilet and sink in the bathroom so that will be cheap. On Nextdoor a few people hired companies to take out the bathtub and put in a step in shower piece and it cost 5k even though the piece is only 300 at Home Depot. I have to have someone licensed and insured being in a condo. The bathtub is very low so I have totally abandoned that idea. My mom was still stepping over at 89 and dying of cancer so I will worry about that if I ever get so it’s a problem.

I put down $1000 earnest money with my offer; the buyers of our house put down $2000. If you can pay 20% or more cash down payment, your lender probably won't require PMI (private mortgage insurance).

That's interesting -- and I agree, it can be hard to get folks to discuss "meaty" and substantial topics...day-to-day stuff, family stuff, medical stuff--lots of that...but!
I started asking each woman to put an idea for a fun or serious conversation into a bowl and we'd pull one or two to get the ball rolling...it was fun! Sometimes risque..and sometimes very serious...loved it all! We solved all the world's problems -- but they never stayed solved...
I wish I'd been a part at the Alqonquin Round Table with Dorothy Parker-- I guess the quips really flew at those gatherings..

When purchasing a 2nd home, 20% down payment is required if you are financing.

I am having trouble finding a new dentist.
Dentist #1 recommended by a friend of my mother's wanted me to email them personal information that I do not feel comfortable sending electronically because it could be hacked. One thing they asked for was my Social Security which when I asked them they admitted they did not need. They also insisted I sign that I had received their privacy policy when I had not.
I contacted Dentist #2 that my brother uses. They verified my insurance before giving me an appointment. They agreed to mail me the new patient forms and let me bring them in with me. The forms said they will spend so much time on developing a treatment plan they may not get to the cleaning. I want the cleaning not a bunch of upselling. They also wanted me to sign that I would pay everything at the time of service. If I have to do that and seek reimbursement from the insurance company (a hassle I am not going to go through) why did they even verify my insurance?
I am still looking for a dentist, but at the thought crosses my mind I shouldn't even bother. Does anyone here not go to the dentist?

I go to the dentist every 3 months; my dental health is very important to me. My dentist's office can generally tell me right then and there how much I will owe after what my insurance will cover, and that is what I pay at the time of service. They are usually right on target, but if they are off a bit, they either issue a refund or bill me. My husband has a different dentist, but they work the same way as far as billing goes.

Little progress on my list
* have caterer menu set up and handout materials gathered for reunion we are "hosting" for our international family association: Do have caterer menu and contract, started a list of places to contact/info to gather
* spend at least 30 hours on our upstairs shoving-crap-around project only half an hour to date
* find someone to fix the kitchen roof (this is difficult - it's a strange roofline that has been cut into/added onto etc and most roofers don't like old houses that aren't straight runs) spent some time online looking for roofers and just gave up. I'll get back to it soon....
* find someone/get quote for replacing a basement wall and tuckpointing part of the foundation have a call in to a gentleman who has done work for us in the past, but have not yet heard back - i don't know if he's even still working, but his son had started to work with him, so I'm hoping to hear something.
Emailed another dentist and found several others near where I work that look promising.

That’s great Rosa. I always clean my windows yearly. Now I only have 3:)).
Found a promising dental provider and booked an appointment online. The website said they take my insurance but verify with the insurer. The verification took over an hour, four different phone calls and speaking with five different people. I finally got through to a supervisor who knew what she was talking about. The first person kept insisting I must go to their website to see if the dental hygienist is in network although the website does not provide data on hygienists, the second guy was offshored and impossible to understand, and on it went.
I finished all the (28) windows, curtains etc. this weekend. Windows 2021 is a wrap!
Wow! Way to go, I need inspiration for working a bit each day, and that is good inspiration.
Working on delayed health issues-- went to eye doctor yesterday and really liked him--he said no, I don't need cataract surgery, like the eye doctor said in Michigan. I just need a pair of glasses for night driving. So I ordered the glasses, and also ordered prescription sunglasses for driving. He also told me to get 3.5 readers-- yikes, but that's an easy fix. So found a new eye doctor here in Maine, check.
Managed to schedule a doctor appointment here for June 30. They are very short on doctors here and the system is overwhelmed with new patients. Apparently everyone is moving to this part of Maine. Wish she could see me sooner, but the time will pass, and getting the appointment was a coup--that was a cancellation. I had to work with the booker for the hospital system--she knew everyone's availability throughout the whole area, and she was saying it is months to get an appointment.
Anyway, that was interesting, and I have an appointment.
Now to work on dentist. Ugh.
Drove by the new dentist's so I know where it is. I was able to get in mid June, a couple weeks after I am fully vaccinated. The previous place didn't have anything until August. It seems demand for everything is high - chicken (which I don't eat), appliances, cars, medical care, gasoline, you name it. It's getting inflationary out there but interest on savings accounts is still negligible. The economy still mainly seems to be working for Wall Street, no change from the previous administration if you don't receive government benefits.
Since we bought our townhouse last fall we've had an ongoing list of projects. Stuff that we've outsourced (upgrading the deck, replacing some rotted wood before the HOA painted the exterior of the building) and also making the place how we want it to be. One of the things we did was purchase a portable a/c unit. After research I learned that if you get a two hose unit they are about as efficient as a window unit, so that's what we bought. There have only been a few days so far this spring where I needed to use it in my office room (which faces the SW and gets really warm in the afternoon).
It came with a big thing to put in the window and point the hoses out the window, but that whole thing seemed pretty janky. So yesterday I went to home depot and bought a board that could replace that whole clunky thing, and some weatherstripping to put around the edges, and this evening I cut the relevant holes and tested it all out. The result is so much better. It will be much more efficient and we won't have hot air leaking through it. The two hoses (outside air in/hot air out) will attach to the two big openings. Weatherstripping will go on both sides.
I realize this isn't as fun as the beautiful cabinets and whatnot that everyone has been discussing on the housing forum but what can I say? I'm a guy who doesn't have a lot of talent or concern regarding decorative stuff, but is much more concerned about the practicality of making the a/c work well and efficiently.
(While I understand that it's a lovely feature, and not a bug, of the forum software to post pictures at stupid random directions, my intention was to post it rotated 90 degrees clockwise so please tilt your head 90 degrees counterclockwise when looking at it.)

Good job, JP! We have a portable a/c in our bedroom which can also function as a heater. It only has one hose though; I had never heard of the two hose units.
I've been a little bit stalled on project progress this week. I've been playing mama to the new kitty and my own mother has needed a bit of help from us.

That is very handsome, and such a good pick on the wood that I thought it was part of the window frame. Well done!
Yes, I agree with Tybee, jp! Very resourceful of you!
DS said the furnace cleaning will not be this week. He is still researching cameras.
So, in terms of my projects this spring, I got one done! While I was away in NJ at my GS birthday party, my DS painted the bedroom. I LOVE it!! It's exactly like I wanted! Attaching a picture. (The bed has a huge bump on it because I have a memory foam on my side--DH likes his mattress rock-hard)
Other projects are: paint living spaces inside; GARDEN!! Edge the gardens, amend soil (got my soil report back from UVM and we're WAYYY too high in phosphorous. I'm wondering if all the farm chemicals used on the island have actually made their way down to the lakeshore.), start planting!! There's SO much to do outside.
That's enough for one season--I've been working so much I'm really behind.

Actually, you're doing it right. Photos show up sideways or upside down on our forums because the software isn't new enough to have incorporated orientation tags which are included in the output of newer digital cameras. Newer software such as that used by Facebook or Instagram, etc., read the orientation tag and adjust photos accordingly so that all of Iris Lilies photos are right side up when displayed whereas our older, simple minded software requires photos to be taken right side up if we want them to be viewed without rotating our monitors. ;)
So I just need to take all my pics for here portrait instead of landscape?

I haven't tested it so can't say with 100% certainty, but yes, in theory that should work.

Thanks! The board is just the generic pine 1x8 from Home Depot that cost about $8.
We still have some of the blue paint for the walls so I’m planning to paint it to match the walls for the inside side of it and just primer it with white for the outside side of it. I suppose if I really wanted to be fancy I’d go make friends with the hoa’s painters (they are doing the next building over currently) and ask them to slap paint on the outside side of it so that it matched the outside wall color.
What are the costs, options, pros and cons of an update to handle this? Just curious if there are any great benefits and/or need to upgrade the SLF?
I am ready to start planting the vegetable garden this coming week. DS is still not ready to cut the tree so that will have to wait until the fall so it does not fall on my tomato plants.
DS bought himself a new A/C so I am optimistic he will be ready for the electrician to come in before too long.

Thus far, I've finished the windows project, although my feathered friends make this somewhat of an ongoing item. I've fertilized the garden beds. I've pretty much finished cleaning up the garden beds and I've spread a lot of the shredded leaves, but I still have a bit to go with that and some more to be shredded. I've bought annuals and planted all my containers, but that wasn't on my list because I really like to do that and tend not to procrastinate on that one. Haven't touched the closet or the cupboard projects yet.
RR, you have motivated me to really think about what I am growing this year and where. I have been studying the amount of sun in my backyard where I grow my veggies in pots. Last year, I had vigorous plants but very limited fruit. I finally realized that the neighbour's house shaded that area until noon. Duh!!! I just decided that I am tossing in some marigold seeds in one part and moving the rhubarb there. I considered moving some of my hostas but they will need too much maintenance as they spread so fast in my yard.
Where I planted the zucchini in a pot, the fruit was a zucchini a day. I have rearranged my pot arrangement and waited to move compost until I knew where I was going as those filled pots get really heavy.
So thanks for the inspiration, RR, and everyone for all the shared ideas.

I'm glad you are finding ways to optimize your garden!

Closet is done! Now what remains is the elephant in the kitchen, so to speak.

Making progress - sold our old house, bought our new one on the 24th, moved on the 25th. Have everything unboxed and basically put away. I'm sure I'll end up rearranging some closets. Will hang pictures this weekend. Have been able to give away the boxes to folks who need them with the last batch leaving this evening. Now to cram for my certification exam on the 21st.

Becky, you got a ton done especially with working full time. I just reorganized my closets because my son hung the organizers.
Beckyliz: You are amazing!
That is a huge load of work to get done, Beckyliz. You must be so relieved to have it finished.
Maybe you mentioned it earlier and I missed it but may I ask what your certification is for?
I finally planted the last marigolds yesterday. No more gardening except lawn mowing and weeding. watering.
So to the OP that started this thread, projects completed!

Changed my mind about having my bathroom professionally done and letting my son do what he can. So far I have a new light, sink and faucet. The toilet comes Friday. He will be installing a door on the outside of the bathroom and removing the one on the toilet and shower. My garbage disposal has never worked so he is replacing that. He just finished installing closet organizers. He has saved me a ton of money.
The 24 inch stove didn’t work right and I had 30 days to return it. We replaced it with a 30 inch which just fits. It’s so much nicer and cooks so much better. Thankfully I bought it at Lowe’s. If it had come from Home Depot they wouldn’t take it back and would just keep fixing it.
Thanks everyone - but I had the week off for "vacation." My test if the part 3 of 3 for Certified Internal Auditor.

Some progress on my list:
* I'm in pretty good shape, reunion-wise. There will be lots of last minute stuff but I can't do it ahead (counts to turn in, actual set-up for banquet, coordinating tours, making buckeye candy to pass out, etc)
* spend at least 30 hours on our upstairs shoving-crap-around project: I've only spent about 8 hours but hey, it's still progress!
* find someone to fix the kitchen roof (this is difficult - it's a strange roofline that has been cut into/added onto etc and most roofers don't like old houses that aren't straight runs) spent some time online looking for roofers and just gave up. then put in a few calls but no one has called me back. ARG!
* find someone/get quote for replacing a basement wall and tuckpointing part of the foundation had a call in to a gentleman who has done work for us in the past, but have not yet heard back - i don't know if he's even still working, but his son had started to work with him, so I was hoping to hear something. Crickets. Guess I have to keep looking! So that's not done, either. . .
WTG, everyone! You guys are a huge help with motivation (even if it doesn't seem like I've been all that motivated, lol)
I have a plan in place for Father's Day but it is weather dependent. Either way we will celebrate in some fashion. Mother's Day she didn't want to go anywhere but we spent time together.
If DS moves out I won't do the security cameras since those are for him.
I went to the dentist. It is a new practice to me and I like it.

I'm glad that worked out for you.
I've done everything on my list except, predictably, the cupboard, but I did take a tiny baby step forward on that project. At least it's a start. It's also almost time for a new list!
Celebrated Father's Day with my dad which was a great way to end the quarter year from equinox to solstice.

That's nice, Jeppy. We are fatherless at this stage of our lives, so it was just another day for us.
