I remember my mother watching tv .. sitting straight up... and sound asleep. I never could understand how she could do that. Now, it happens to me too. It is very irritating. The good news is I usually record so I can rewind and still see the whole program.
Lose my relationship with my son.

Pay for storage. Long term.
i can’t say I am actually doing that, but I am all in for DH to rent storage for his hideously huge bedroom furniture that he probably will not be able to let go.
when we bought the Hermann house I *foolishly* (what an idiot I was!) told him it was ok to get this 1970’s bedroom set from his father’s house in another state. His parents had it for 30 years of our marriage because I refuse to have it in my house. He drove there to pick it up and installed it in the BIG Hermann bedroom that was formally a garage. There, plenty of room and also it was just a beater house, I was not picky about how eveything looked.
but we turned that big bedroom into a kitchen/dining room and there is NO bedroom now in the .Hermann house that will hold it. I can just see him cramming the entire thing into one of the small square bedrooms. This furniture was made for long rectangular rooms of the 1970’s.
so, if we need to rent permanent storage for this crap, ok. If I can just throw money at this problem to make it go away, I am ok with that.
Never entered my mind that I would experience a world-wide pandemic in my lifetime.

Yes about the pandemic, but that I would find complete contentment staying at home visiting via Facetime, walking the dog, plus attending church services, theatre, opera, etc., via zoom and Youtube , Amazon delivery in a few days (I refuse to pay for Prime). It is an amazing experience.

I’llCome back to this thread because yes I am currently doing or have done in the past, things I’ve said I would never do. That is why now that I am old I truly try to catch myself when I’m thinking “I would never do that! “

On the depressing side... watch my child die.
On a more up-beat note... the traveling I have been able to do. I never imagined I would go to some of the places I have been to or have some of the experiences I have had in this lifetime (so far).

It would be very difficult to see one's child die; sorry it was part of your experience.
Yes to the travel. It used to be one took one big trip in a lifetime if one was fortunate enough to be able to do that and return home. Now travel is routine.
Scuba dive. I was afraid of the deep end of the pool when I started! :D

That's just it, travel was never - and really still isn't - routine for me! It was always either a lack of time or money, which is why I'm so surprised as to how much I have actually done! (and where!!)

Not really sure why this is in the family matters section with how it started.
Mine would be have a mortgage again.
I never thought I would amount to much in life so pretty much doing anything is something I thought I'd never do. Never thought I would work for the Police. Never thought I would live in the boonies of Southern Maryland. Never thought I would live debt free since my 40's.
Hire an unlicensed contractor. I didn't check until it was too late, trying to get a ceiling that was coming down replaced. Got a recommendation from someone I used before who is licensed and insured and assumed his peer would be also. Oops. Hopefully everything goes well today.

I was so excited that my hygienist is permitted to polish teeth again, and my teeth were polished during my cleaning appointment yesterday! Whoever would have thought I could be excited by such a thing?

but jeppy, what does “licensed” mean? Here it just means someone pays a business tax to the city. It does not address his competence.
Or maybe you mean you need licensed electrician to perform work authorized only by a person approved to perform that work. you talk about ceiling work but I don’t know if you really need an electrician.

I love stories of people who overcome fears to find their passion! Kudos, Tradd!

I remember you telling us this and how your friend at the time was so supportive. How many years ago was that? You have made such strides ahead!

I say some of the things my mom did.
Oh yeah, me too!
About 20 years ago, DD2 was counselling a friend through a challenge was shocked to hear what came out of her own mouth, totally appropriate for the situation but exactly what she had heard me say. After her initial surprise, she told me, it made her laugh and appreciate my earlier efforts.
It was rather nice to hear that.
I use some of my mother's favourite sayings. One is - "give flowers to the living, not the dead". I make a point of giving fresh flowers to those going through a down period and it does give them a needed boost. I rarely give flowers at a funeral, once I think.

I think the tradition of giving flowers at the funeral is dying out, but I know that I, as a funeral attendee, like looking at the floral arrangements. When one of our garden club ladies died unexpectedly there an outpouring of floral arrangements for her “viewing. “There were some interesting and creative designs what you would expect honoring someone who did interesting and creative designs herself.
So that always gives me something to look at and talk about with others, and helps me kill the requisite 40 minutes that you have to spend at rhe viewing events.

I talked about how I am like my mother..... family trait?? The post then morphed into whatever anyone thought they would never do.
I never thought I'd be living in a beautiful, rural part of NJ. Gorgeous views everywhere I look.
On the verge of menopause and am having trouble losing a few pounds. I was always a twig and could eat anything and not gain weight.
Never thought I'd enjoy shooting. And flying in a powered parachute.
The two above things are due to a special relationship with an amazing man....who happens to be married. He's crazy about me (and I him), he calls me almost every day, truly loves and cares for me. Since he's married he is definitely off-limits and he knows I mean it. However if his situation changed, we'd be together in a second. So for now we're just very good friends who care about each other, get along great, and enjoy each other's company (he was my late cousin's neighbor and helped me out a lot when I was dealing with his estate). I've had boyfriends in the past but never felt so close to them as I do with him. It kinda sucks that it will never be anything more than it is now but that's how it is and I wouldn't do anything to break up his marriage, although it doesn't seem like a happy one for either of them. But that's their problem. I was content being single and wasn't looking for anyone figuring I would never find someone I'd want to be with and then he came along. Bad timing I guess.

I also have some of my mom's mannerisms and saying. Funny thing is one of my kids is starting to do with same - following in my footsteps, so to speak. LOL.

Two things I would never have put together - menopause and powered parachute! At least ONE of these are enjoyable!!! :)
Yesterday I picked up two dead bats. Well one was nearly dead. It squeaked its last squeak as I laid it down outdoors.

Rabies?
I read somewhere that bats are the only animals that really present a rabies threat in Washington.
Nah, we have them occasionally here at the workplace. They get in & can't find their way back out to the bugs & water.

That's a relief. Not for them, though...
