…won’t last forever.
This is the tagline for promoting the Rolling Stones’ upcoming tour. “Your chance to see the Stones won’t last forever. “
This is hilarious to me. How many rock ‘n’ roll bands are advertising their impending death from old age? Keith Richards has the best physician in the world to keep that old drug infused bag of bones alive.
I say this with all the love and admiration I have, for they are the best rock ‘n’ roll band in the world. Mick Jagger continues to be magical. His rubber face is .other worldly.
The promo plays the first few notes of Start Me Up. Very effective to give just a hint.
I have seen the Stones twice, once as a young person and once as a middle-age person. That is enough. I queue up YouTube videos of Mick doing Saturday Night Live bits to get my Jagger fix nowdays.

I was never much of a Rolling Stones fan. Then I saw Jumpin' Jack Flash and became a teeny bit of a Stones fan watching Whoopie dance to the song in penguin slippers. LOL.

That was fun to see. Talk about a cluttered interior decor!
Well Phil Collins had the "Not Dead Yet" tour.

Surely there are cheaper ways to recapture one’s youth than throwing money at the geezers of rock.

I'm not so sure about that. Recapturing one's youth is an expensive proposition no matter how one goes about it.
-plastic surgery - expensive. and painful.
-divorcing one's similarly aged wife and marrying a new one that's half the age. - very expensive. and emotionally damaging to one's family
-buying the 50 year old hot rod car that you had lusted after as a teenager - expensive. and likely to result in people questioning the size of your private parts.
-buy tickets for a rock concert with musicians who could be spokespersons for geritol - pricey but not nearly as expensive as the others. potentially damaging to one's ears.

Why assume it's about recapturing one's youth, rather than simply liking the stones?
I'm not a huge rolling stones fan and I'm sure the tickets are probably expensive (if you are going to a mainstream concert it's going to be expensive, if you don't like that you can probably find some lesser known band to see for cheap or free, sometimes cities put on summer concerts for free too and I've gone to a few, but it's not going to be the rolling stones, but it's a real positive vibe at a free concert, all ages and people who know nothing about the act or sometimes even the style of music go - because free concert). I wouldn't mind seeing ELO though, and not going to be around forever. I would not turn down a Neal Young concert. But I don't spend money on any of those things really. Most of the time I don't spend money on entertainment period, well plays now and then (mostly then - before the global pandemic, bf likes plays, and I don't mind them), unless you are defining entertainment pretty broadly (books or restaurants or something).
What do you suggest as some ways?
viagra? living through one's kids?

It’s about many things but just hearing the energy of some of those classic rock ‘n’ roll hits is great. Is that recapturing my youth? I don’t know, but so if what if it is? I would say those old guys running around the stage are a good testament to aging well. So, they can show us how to get old and stay effective.

I can relive the days of my youth for free. All I have to do is turn on the news. They’re re-enacting the fall of Saigon even as we speak, helicopters and all. The President is begging OPEC to increase production. Inflation is on it’s way back, as is violent crime in the cities. It’s like the early seventies again.

Back in the seventies, I cut my hair short and put on a uniform. That’s what nonconformity looked like in those days.

And we just had a president who should have resigned in disgrace. Maybe you’re onto something.

in 2005 I went to see Paul McCartney. it was my first and only concert by a Beatle. He was 63 then. I went because I figured I had few chances left to ever achieve my dream of going to see him/Beatles live. He's gone on to do 9 more concert tours.
I wasn't trying to recapture my youth--I was engaging in a lifelong passion for Beatles music. BTW, in Ellen Langer's "Counterclockwise" (https://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/26/magazine/what-if-age-is-nothing-but-a-mind-set.html)study, "geezers" were brought to an environment set up to reflect their growing-up years and where music of their youth was played, and at the end of the study their cognition, gait and other biological markers had improved significantly, so in that sense, maybe I did recapture some of my youth health-wise, but that wasn't intentional.
I did pay what I thought was an exorbitant price: $700 for two seats, but it was well worth it to cross that dream off my bucket list.
IL, I think that the new Stones marketing approach is fun. I did enjoy the Stones in my youth, but was really a true Beatlemaniac. I am impressed with the ability for these old rockers to keep rocking. .
And we just had a president who should have resigned in disgrace. Maybe you’re onto something.
Yeah. Welcome back Jimmy Carter.

If this wasn’t a Covid super spreader event, this upcoming Rolling Stones concert next month in St. Louis, I might actually go. This is the first time in my life where I would buy the highest end seats possible. But even then, the good ones are probably gone although the evil ticket sellers do release good seats throughout the sales period.

So’s my Uncle Bill. That doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be an ineffectual president.

Well, they could stay together and change their name to the kidney stones......
Or, they are getting close to the age, to be able to join the Zimmers. (if I remember correctly, one of the Zimmers was the parent of some famous band drummer)
Don't understand the recapturing of ones youth thing? As a kid, I went to one "concert", that I can think of locally, and that was because my grandmother always wanted to see Boxcar Willie. As a child, I think I was nine when I was taken to a "concert" at Branson; Baldknobbers. (grandma wanted me to grow up and be playing fiddle in a bluegrass band)
When I was sixteen, I attended the only concert that most would consider me going (bought my ticket), and that was Tangerine Dream. Nine times they were applauded back out onto the stage for encores. I would have loved to see them again, but their "golden age" was gone, and about three years ago, their founding member, was working on their last album when he died.
Now my late boss, has attended multiple concerts. They always had fun with it (really oversized sunglasses at Elton John, where people were trying to buy them off of them). A few years back, my boss wanted to buy me a ticket to see Steve Winwood (someone we both liked). I said no, but it did get me to thinking as when I was a kid, I never had time or money to see these people, and so many of my "youth" ones are gone (Fat's Domino).
So Roger Waters came to town a few years back, and by the time I found out, tickets were double at least on the secondary market. When it was announced in 2020, he was coming back, Steve got on the phone and ordered tickets for four of us to go. Pandemic, death, etc. has got in the way and he is supposedly coming back, 2022. If/when he gets back, he will be 79 or 80. I think that is also close to the time that Elton John is supposed to return for his "final" concert, that was postponed. I am thinking neither may happen, but those I know in the industry, think they will (contracts).

the grave stones. :laff:
Yea I've only ever gone to so many concerts. Elton John I could have seen for free several years ago at an Oracle convention I was sent to by work, back when it was still in SFO. But was tired, I worked hard, but not played hard much at all, and I had a free trip to SFO, but was mostly all studious. :laff:
recapturing one's youth, there are a few older boomer rockers I'd like to see, but is there anyone Gen X I'd like to see? Very few. So so much for recapturing youth, eh? Does anyone really think one can? I mean one can get plastic surgery (but it doesn't really make you younger even if it improves your appearance), or live through one's kids or whatever (this actually seems a common thing, maybe there's a lot of mentally unhealthy people ). But not really. I saw the Gin Blossoms at a free concert though, because free. When the price is right ... the price is right.

Grave stones sounds like the venue with the Grateful Dead and the Stones. (thumbs up smiley) I can picture a few people there. (now all deceased, awaiting the other half)
Never gone to a concert because of the price. I haven't gone because of price (time and/or money), but I have never gone to one I was given the free opportunity to. Of course when I don't listen to certain genre's of music, I don't know who these people are, when I have been standing less then two feet from them. Had a bit of that argument with a friend, when he had a gal who worked for us, on the phone with that Jay Z guy. Still have never heard anything that person does.
Never gone to a concert because of the price.
Ha, that makes me think of all the concerts I went to back in the late 60's-early 70s. The first concert I attended was Iron Butterfly (Inna Gadda Da Vida, Baby) who were opened by Blues Image (Ride, Captain, Ride). I attended a concert with my sister at UW and saw Hoyt Axton open for both Three Dog Night and the Ike and Tina Turner Revue. OMG, Tina! Oh, those tickets were $5 each/student.
I doubt if most concerts I went to back then cost more than my babysitting money could pay for (my parents would NEVER pony up for that)---and I saw a lot! Creedence Clearwater Revival, Stephen Stills, Donovan, Led Zeppelin (twice), Moody Blues, The Eagles, Gordon Lightfoot, Seals & Croft, Cat Stevens, Earth, Wind, and Fire----and some others my feeble boomer brain can't recall right now.
Whilst I admire that Mick can still bring it to the fans, I think I might cringe watching him thrust himself around the stage at nearly 80. (or is he already 80?) I just don't need to see that. If I want to relive their music, I can simply stream it into my earbuds as loudly as I want while doing my daily routine, or turn up my car speakers when "Can't you hear me knocking" comes on my car's Sirius station. (I think Charlie Watts is way underrated as a drummer.)

Charlie Watts died today. It is over, the end of an era.
Well a drummer is going to be easier to replace than Mick.

Secretly, I had the same thought.
I will let y’all know what they’re going to do St. Louis concert which takes place next month.
edited to add: According to news reports, Watts was not going to join the Stones on their 2021 tour anyway, so they already have a drummer in place. Rock on boys.

Oh, wow.
Apparently watts had backed out earlier this month due to health reasons so a replacement is already at hand.
And unless one chooses the def lepperd drummer I would agree that replacing the drummer is probably the least disruptive person to replace.

For that remark, I applaud you with the sound of one hand clapping.
I find it fascinating that the Stones (Mick, Keith Richards) who freely indulged in God knows what drugs and debauchery over the years are still bringing it, while Charlie Watts who briefly dabbled before embracing a clean life and a 57-year marriage, is defunct. Food for thought.

And now I am hearing, Only the Good Die Young, LOL.
To be fair 80 isn’t exactly young. And Mick Jagger and Keith Richards are both still in their 70’s so, young in comparison.
It could also be that Jagger and Richards have been reliably taking their Geritol every day while Watts ignored the advice of the ads and now we see the result.
80 is younger all the time from where I stand. :~)

I so agree! And, 25 year olds look like babies to me now. LOL.
A friend posted a video on YouTube of marching band from when I was in college. I shared it on our work team’s informal Teams channel along with a picture of me in my uniform and one of my coworkers was like ‘omg. I wasn’t even born then!’
