View Full Version : Sailboat gets in the way of Great Lakes freighter

The Cuyahoga was on the St Clair River, not far from the southern end of Lake Huron. Sailboat was in the shipping channel when the Cuyahoga had to make a turn to line up for the Blue Water Bridge (links Port Huron, MI and Sarnia, ON). Scrapes on the sides of the freighter are from going through the Soo and ice.

And no, the sailboat did not have right of way in this instance as the freighter was constrained by the shipping channel and her draft.

I don’t think many people realize how heavily traveled the Great Lakes are.

We've had a boat for 4 years now and the learning curve was pretty steep, so maybe this boater was inexperienced. Hopefully he had a boating license!

I was watching that thinking gosh, do they know how to work that sail, what if they don’t really know how to get out of the way, ack.
