View Full Version : A winding down of life.
Friday, I used the last of the 50 pound pound bag of dog food. We only have one dog left. Holly went to the Rainbow Bridge almost a year ago. Snickers went to the Rainbow Bridge a month ago. He's 18 and half years ago, a tri-pod . He gets treadmill water therapy, Adquean injections, massage and cold laser therapy. I bought a six pound bag, because there is no need for the big bags anymore.
My all time favorite horse, went to the Rainbow Bridge in April. I had her leased out to a young lady who is learning how to ride. I have been putting off going to that training barn to get the rest of her things. It was very hard. I do have another horse there that is being leased out as a school horse ( also known as a school master)
It's too much, yet not enough.
After Zio goes to the Rainbow bridge, we have decided to take a break from dogs for a bit. Its been tough dealing with old dog issues and having a veterinarian shortage, which makes it hard to get in on short notice.
I'm so sorry for all the losses.

I am so sorry. I know how difficult that is. Within 2 years I lost 4 old dogs and 2 good friends that were married. It was a terrible time.
That is a lot to cope with, Boss mare. Sorry for your losses of animal family.
Vets in short supply seems to be happening elsewhere. Someone explained that the pandemic created such a demand for pets that vet offices were overwhelmed with new patients.

Its bigger than that, but Covid certainly isn't helping . www.nomv.org .

Boss mare, it is always so hard to say Goodbye to our beloved pets and you had so many go in such a short time. Sorry to hear this.
It seems these tragedies always come in clusters. I'm so sorry you're going through this.
Very sorry to hear about your pets. Poor Corgos.
You have my sympathies. I almost lost my faithful Bloodhound Elvis twice over the past few months, and the vet care currently available here is limited at best. I think he may be my last pet for a while.

I understand; I've had enough of avoidable tragedies.

When your favorite pets die, that is hard.
My current bulldog is pretty and nice, but he isn't my favorite bulldog by a long shot. The favorite ones are forever missed.
I like to think that my current cat is a reincarnation of all my past cats. My heart broke with each one that passed (all Siamese) but in this way, they are always with me.
I am resisting getting another dog until I can be reasonably sure it will outlive me. I can't take the pain of losing them. I'm sure other losses will come my way at this stage of my life--why volunteer for another? So looks like I won't be getting a dog for another couple of years--maybe 2027. (I'm joking, but only half joking)

Weird. I don’t want my animals to outlive me, or even grieve my absence (although the Bulldogs are usually happy with any caretakers.) Who will take care of them if I die?
It is not about me.
I think we may get a cat when we move to Hermann but I want to make sure that cat is at least 10 years old.

I know. My viewpoint is entirely selfish. But in fact, no one knows who will outlive who. I say that to DH all the time. He thinks I will outlive him, but I tell him not to count on that.
I compare our lives with pets as lives being knit together. So when they die, "Someone" takes that fiber that was the pet and rips it out of our being, leaving such a big tear it's almost unbearable.
There are few beings that are so intricately woven into the fabric of our lives. Pets depend on us. They bookend eras in our lives. Every decade, a dog--a period of our lives magnified by memories of the stalwart companions at our sides. I'm not a crier, but I've shed more than a few tears over the loss of my two dogs.
I'm quite sure I won't wait until 2027. And even if I do, my forebears are hardy Yankee stock and many lived well into their 90s.

Catherine, I think you have a couple of dogs in your lifetime yet ahead.
If I die I know DH would be fine with taking care of the dog we have and probably a couple of dogs. But I don’t want him to be left with a whole menagerie such as 2 to 3 dogs, a couple of cats, etc.
This is why I like doing foster work because dogs come in my home but I know they’re going to leave. I just wish my current dog was not so reactive in unpredictable ways with housemate dogs. His attitude certainly cuts down on what we can do a foster dogs, although I think that once we moved Hermann we will have more rooms with doors to keep dogs separate.
We have an animal rescue group here that only takes in the pets of the terminally ill or elders needing advanced care. Most of the cats and dogs are older. I wouldn't mind fostering a little dog but I sure don't want to own one again.

The loss of my last dog was really hard for me. I have been adamant about not getting another one. Now, I know that I will eventually get another dog, but not until the household schedules are better and more pet-receptive. With the hours we are all working right now, I don't think it would be fair - to the pet or us. But, at least I know I would like another in my life.

When my favorite dog Cassie died I was heartbroken despite having 3 others. She was unique. 2 months later I got a puppy which I rarely do and he did replace her. He lays around my neck like Cassie did and prefers me to all others. However, she was really naughty and he is a much nicer model:)).
Condolences boss mare... it is sad you have lost so many in such a short time..
