View Full Version : Halloween
Are folks giong dark this year, or is it Halloween as usual. I went back and forth and finally went to the store for candy. The little ones are always fun to see. The store was sold out of the favorites, so there must be some expectations of normal though I'm not expecting much. Normal crowd for here is a dozen or two, but I went dark last year and did not see any kids out and about.

Here I thought the little ghouls would be trick-or-treating tonight, so I made dinner early with a plan to keep all the lights off in the house. Then I learned that the trick-or-treat activity will happen tomorrow. So we will repeat staying in, turning off lights.
Live in an apartment so no kiddies at all.

Living in a condo sadly no kids. I used to love dressing up myself and the dogs to give out candy.

I live in an apartment building. There actually are some kids (teenagers too) in this apartment building, cross section of life kinda, but no trick or treating goes on here. I don't think anyone really trick or treats apartments.

In the immortal words of my late friend/boss, "going to dress up as a pedo, and turn out all the lights", LOL.

We almost always buy candy and have our lights on, but we get few to no trick-or-treaters. This year, we're going to keep our lights off and go spend the evening with my mom and help her give out candy. She seems somewhat excited by the holiday, and she is someone who has always really enjoyed it, but she also seems a bit daunted at the prospect of managing it, let alone know which day is Halloween. So our mission is to help her have a pleasant evening, and incidentally pass out some candy if kids show up. If not, we will have to eat the candy ourselves, but I think we're up to the task. :)
We're on a dirt road that's a dead end, with no streetlights and 12 houses. Usually no trick or treaters, although I always buy candy (my favorite type) every year just in case. The only time we had trick or treaters was when we first moved here and the neighbors had small children, and that was just one year. I have a new neighbor this year who lives with her 3 and 5 year grandchildren, so I bought a couple of full sized bars just in case they come over. And a bag of candy just in case ;)

We live on the main road of our little town and there are newer developments not far away, so we do tend to get a lot of trick-or-treaters. I went and bought candy yesterday so either dh or I will sit outside and hand some out - masked, of course. ;)
I do not hand out candy due to DS's social anxiety about people coming onto the property.

I like the way you think, Herbgeek. We too buy our favorite types of candy for the nonexistent trick-or-treaters, strictly in the interest of avoiding food waste, of course.

LOL. I got one bag of what I like and 1 bag of what I don't like. The hope, of course, is to hand it ALL out! But just in case... :~)

Dark here. The number of T&Ters has dwindled quite a bit in this neighborhood with the alternatives of church-based celebrations that assiduously avoid invoking the spirit of Halloween while retaining its trappings or locally organized trunk-or-treats or local businesses holding events where no one has to guess about the candy or the amount of snow (https://www.startribune.com/why-are-minnesotans-still-talking-about-the-halloween-blizzard-of-1991/600111125/).

Halloween, a time for ghoulish spectres and zombie invasions.
Yesterday Cori Bush and Adam Shiff were a mere half a block away from my house, dining at our neighborhood restaurant.
scary scary stuff.
DD was telling me that in her neighborhood the trend is for folks to set up card tables at the end of their driveways and hand out candy there. Much more socializing with neighbors and no more doorbell ringing. Has to be decent weather though.
Rosa, that's what we used to do when my mom was still here. Nice for everybody.
We did buy candy, but it's a crapshoot whether we get many kids or not. Last year only a few, naturally. But this year people seem a bit more willing to be out. We live in a large neighborhood and there's a Section 8 neighborhood across the boulevard. So there's potential. If we run out of candy, we'll put out the lights. If we have leftover, I'll take it to the grandkids and let their mother deal with it. Just so it's out of my house.

I had a flier in my screen door promoting something similar for the nieghborhood. Seeing as how it's 40 degrees and threatening showers, plus prime football on TV, I don't expect much.

Dh handled the trick-or-treating here while I was visiting two sisters - one just had surgery. The town where they were really did up Halloween and it was wonderful to see! They blocked off several blocks of her street and even the parents dressed up with their kids. It was quite a sight. Dh said it was short and sweet here at home, but not that many kids.
Just had to share this; it still makes me smile, and if you go dark on Halloween you don't get to have this kind of experience:
I answered the door to two tween-ish, maybe a bit younger girls in full costume. One was leaning on the doorbell and when I opened the door she cried, "PEEKABOO!!! " then she said, "I mean BOO...I mean peekaboo, I mean trick or treat!"
As I chatted with them I could see that she was probably a bit on the spectrum. All the kids this year seemed to be so happy to be able to be out and about.

We haven't had anybody the last few years. This year we got new neighbors across the street with two little girls. They did a lot of decorating for Halloween so we bought candy for them and they were the only two we had.
We moved to a new neighborhood the end of May - it's duplexes and I'd say about half are owner-occupied and half are rentals. It's great to see so many kids around again. I didn't know what to expect, so I bought about 4 bags of candy. I'd say we had had about 30 trick-or-treaters, so I'm glad DH let kids take handfuls.
Churches and businesses are organizing trunk or treat around here more and more. It's nice because there's not so much walking for the little ones and they're in a well-lit safe place. However, I think they're making the traditional neighborhood t-or-t a think of the past.

They have trunk or treat around here as well, but NOT on Halloween! Kids do both.

Several households around this area delivered candy through a long tube or shoot this year. Last year they did it for Covid, but this year they did it because it was fun. It also keeps little kids from having to climb up big sets of steps that in some houses around here are a big deal.
These households posted photos to Nextdoor of their candy shoots and they were funny.
