My son and I are going to go through a box of family slides once I get my slide viewer and loupe and we are going to winnow out the chaff from the wheat. He has promised to help me, and to help me digitize them. He wants me to throw out the original slides and negatives (some negatives go back to 1915) but that may be abridge too far.

Held the annual sorting of the plastic containers. The containers in good condition with a matching lid stay and the rest was tossed.

"Annual sorting of the plastic containers" sounds like almost as much fun as the "Semi-annual closet clean-out." We all know how to have a good time, don't we? :laff:

This is not so much a purge as a satisfactory re-homing. I had 4 kalanchoe plants and a sansevieria outdoors for the summer, but they are toxic to cats, so I don't want to bring them in and they aren't cold hardy. I posted them on our local Facebook giving page, and someone claimed them within moments. It made me happy to find them a new home.

A raggedy pillowcase.

My winter clothes are pretty minimal at this point but I could cull through more bed linens.

I am also working on wearing what I have vs buying more things. Can I make it through the winter without a pair of black boots? If I get creative with my color combinations maybe so.

I'm in the process of culling the wardrobe. I actually am wearing the iffy item and then deciding if it stays or goes. So far they all go!

(Who else can't throw worn underwear in the garbage without washing it, then folds and puts it back into the drawer and wears it again? The cycle frustrates me!)

Went through the manuals and paperwork drawer and got rid of almost two inches of space. Didn't need the space, as the paperwork is relatively up to date. Just didn't need the booklets and manuals saved forever, either.

Two BBQ tongs with rust. Dh saw them and tried to rescue out of the bin, but I intercepted him!

Three knives I've never used. Yes, they're part of a set, but again - never used, so out they went.

Two rags. Do they even count?

I have two trivet things in my purgatory area. I think they're out, but not absolutely certain. They've been hidden in a drawer for years and I've found workarounds for hot pots, but they do the job - and I probably would use them.

Getting rid of the ugly deck in entirety is a cause for celebration.

I emptied five bottles of liquor I will never drink and put the bottles in recycling. I think these bottles are ones that DH saved from jettisoning last time around, but this time I beat him to the draw. He won’t drink them, he doesn’t drink alcohol except he does drink Buttershots in his eggnog this time of season.

Yay on the deck being gone!

The mobile and bassinet pieces for the pack-n-play I've had since GS #1 was born and he's 17. DIL used the PnP this summer for youngest while they camped at the beach. I've not gotten it back, so its probably toast ( the reason she took mine anyway).

A glass cutting board, more rags, dried markers and play dough. A duffel bag that molded under my bed - while other bags are fine.

Gone from my house, but not trash: tons of winter clothes for GD #6, whose sisters seemed to bypass that size / season. There's five heavy winter coats. WE ALL LIVE IN FLORIDA. Rarely need more than a hoodie.
Also n sending them back all the baby items since youngest grand is two and a half. I've filled the rear of my SUV.

Hi everybody,

I did a quick imperfect clean-out of our downstairs coat closet and found a fair amount to get rid of. I took 16 items to Goodwill, donated a blanket and a cushion to a vet's office near us who likes them to keep the animals comfortable, and gave away 4 items to a woman in my Buy Nothing Group.

Total for month so far: 22.

We got rid of so much stuff at our town's household hazardous waste disposal event this morning! It feels like a major accomplishment because I had a box of stuff to go in 2019, but Mom took a fall that day and we ended up spending the day in the ER with her. There is usually a disposal date annually, but there wasn't one in 2020 due to Covid, so I've been holding this stuff for over 2 years! Meanwhile, it occurred to me to check out Mom's cellar and she had loads of stuff, so we got rid of quite a bit for her. It's good to know it was disposed of properly, and of course the key is to minimize bringing more toxic material into our homes, which is certainly the plan.
We also dropped off a bunch of worn/stained/ripped textiles to the fabric recycling bin.

Sold a small bar cart on FB marketplace yesterday afternoon. I have a couple of boxes to go to the thrift store on Friday. I have two bags of egg cartons in my car to give to my egg lady. Took a kitchen trash bag full of plastic bags to the recycling tub at the grocery store yesterday.

I used our local FB gifting page to give away 2 wine glasses, 3 martini glasses, 4 mojito glasses, and several cookie cutters. Still waiting for someone to bite on the 6 pilsner glasses. No, we did not become teetotalers, we just do not need as many specialized types of glassware as we had accumulated.

I have been working with a container principle with organizing. I bought a glass front wall cabinet from Habitat for Humanity, not very big, and all my really good glassware has to fit in it. So I am now at my limit, no more glass unless I get rid of something.

I collect champagne glasses so I guess I don't actually collect them anymore now, I just have a collection!

I broke the last wine glass from my mom’s set of wine glasses, not purposely.

I have several champagne size glasses from her but they are no fun, they’re so tiny. I may or may not move them to another house.Since they tend to spark more irritation than joy, they will probably not move with me.

I actually like the idea of the "stemless" wine glasses as a replacement for ALL my drinking glasses as they seem fancy enough for wine, yet just as good for orange juice, water, whatever. Maybe someday. Mugs are a totally different animal. LOL

We have 2 tall champagne flutes remaining of the 4 we bought before we were married. Some specialty glasses are justified! However, we do tend to use pint glasses for a lot of things including mojitos, beer or cider. In our little house, it is better to go with multi-taskers whenever possible.
Actually, the pilsner glasses wouldn't make terrible champagne flute stand-ins, they are quite tall and slender. I will still try to re-home them though. We don't drink all that much champagne anyway.

I drink wine from a glass juice jar when there's no company over. It goes in the dishwasher. If there are guests, then a "real glass" is used!

Back to forbidding hubby from looking in the trash bin! So.many things went that I filled a couple of trash bags. There's the beginnings of breathing room in the kitchen and my closet is much lighter too.

A big screen tv that wasn't smart was not grabbed by anybody before trash pickup, so its in the landfill - not what I thought would occur. It did work, and I taped a sign on it. Oh well.

Well all this talk about wine glasses made me go count mine and sort my glasses and guess what, I managed to drop a pitcher from my parents' house onto one of my nifty champagne glasses, so now I am down one. It's still too crowded in that cabinet, apparently. Jinxed!

In preparation for sewing 2 quilts for little boys during my Thanksgiving week off, I dumped 4 shoe boxes of notions on my bed, rifled through the pile, faced the fact that I will probably never use any of it … all into a large bag now to be dropped off at the animal rescue thrift shop tomorrow.

Then while looking through my boxes for matching fabrics, I realized I have some fabric my cousin would use for her charity quilts, and I have no identified projects for those pieces… pressed and into a box to drop off for her this weekend.

Bag and box into my car, shoe boxes into the recycling bin— and I’m loving the freed up space!

Tybee: I'm sorry about your champagne glass, but good work on the clothes.
Mschrisgo: Sounds like you cleared out a lot of stuff too!

One beloved, but well-worn bathrobe gone to fabric recycling. It was a favorite for a long time, but looks pretty ratty and I have others that are in much nicer condition.

For more tedious detail about wineglasses: yesterday I went shopping to the stores and I may give a report on that. But here’s the deal, because I am somewhat picky about wine glasses, the thrift store wine glasses seldom work for me.

Yet, yesterday I found 5 wineglasses at a thrift store that were very nice quality, really nice! Except they had the name of a winery on them. So I have to weigh how irritating that is, that advertising.I may go back today and get them. The irritation factor is equal to the feel-good factor of buying from the thrift store and keeping them out of the landfill. I think those two factors cancel out each other and I end up with very nice wine glasses. Cost isn’t really an issue but it is something to consider.

I went to the store Bed Bath and Beyond and bought 4 wine glasses for $40. I figure the thrift store wine glasses will get me down to about $4-$5 per stem average.

Since I’m visiting thrift stores, I dropped off several things. I’ve been saving a Christmas wreath and lights to give away, but I had no takers in my neighborhood so I dropped them off at the thrift store along with shoes, a sweater, and a game.

Two scuba tank vest dealies - help Tradd, the name for them is gone! Anyway, they're on the porch for our son to pick up. Son does diving and fishing charters for work, eh hasn't dived in more than five years.

Twelve pairs of trouser socks and various other dress shoes and spare socks gone.

Another pair of hubby's work boots. Hoarder still has five pair!

Various motor home spare parts and pieces - with still more to dig out - as we sold it to our kids and asked it they wanted these items and were told no.

I’m starting to think about the flower show supplies in my basement and which ones I need to get rid of. I am formulating a methodology before I go down there and start moving and sorting. I’m giving myself an arbitrary number to reduce the storage space there by half.

Tybee

I really like that method, IL--I have used it with books, tablecloths, and pants--start with how many you need, or reduce by half if you have a lot.

Our ample supply of plastic cutlery and paper plates has been nearly used up by DH in the past 8 months in his bachelor pad in Hermann. Having no running water, and later only cold water, made disposable eating utensils necessary. So, that has been a win.

Today I plan to pull out all of my mom’s Champagne glasses and offer them up on our neighborhood FB freebie page.If no one takes them, I’m not sure what to do. I really don’t want to haul them, all of them, to a new place and I’m not sure I wanna burden the thrift stores with them. On the other hand this is holiday season and thrifters just might want some champagne glasses. They are from the 1950s. If only the thrift stores would Offer them a price where they go quickly.

When I moved the champagne glasses out of the back cabinet, I ran across 7 wineglasses of the same set. I had forgotten I had those wine glasses. So I kept them even though I’ve never liked them. They have a pattern that marks the perfect 4 ounce pour, so for that reason they are useful.

I’ve been consciously reducing the amount of red wine I drink and I am trying to stick to 4 ounces.

Three strings of outdoor Christmas lights. Ten outdoor solar lights - they all crapped out in the last two weeks! Many more decor items for Christmas. There's a wreath that's part of a set and I use the two door side trees and the lit swag, but the wreath doesn't do it for me. I should declutter it. Very pretty, IL, and I'm glad you found good homes for them. I do prefer to drink champagne from a flute style of glass, although those drinks are few and far between for me. I did just read about a dry sparking blueberry wine that I want to try, Bluet, made from wild Maine blueberries. The flutes will come out of the cabinet for that.
