Since we’ve already started cooking, I would like to wish all and sundry a happy Thanksgiving. I’ve always liked the idea of a holiday based on gratitude, that most positive of emotions.

And a very Happy Thanksgiving back to you and yours, LDAHL. I actually started doing some of my dishes this morning before work.

I like Thanksgiving well enough except that it sets off the “holiday season” which I tire of after 3-5 days. Unfortunately, it goes on and on for weeks.

Happy Thanksgiving--yes gratitude is a wonderful emotion and a good regular practice!

We'll be grateful if we can find a turkey! True to our fashion of waiting to the last minute, we realized we hadn't gotten a turkey yet, so DH is calling our local turkey producer to see if she has anything left. Our next door neighbors will be coming over and my single son as well, but my two married kids are off to the in-laws. Should be pretty low-key.

My clever wife always keeps one in the freezer for “emergencies”. Worked out well for us this year.

This is the alternate year we share with her side of the family, a prolific tribe that overstuffs a farmhouse with the full spectrum of the ages of man. So many people are there that you usually get a choice of turkey, chicken or ham. The holiday at my side of the family is much smaller in scope and a great deal quieter. I’ve come to appreciate both for different reasons.

I love the gratitude holiday. I have a friend who on her Facebook page Nov. 1, each year, listed one thing she was grateful for and added one each day. She is very ill now and did not do that this month. I miss it, so I am doing my own, in my journal. I have to catch up as it is the 24th. There is so much each minute for which I am grateful so 24 items is not a difficult task.

Happy Turkey Day, everyone. :)

Btw, practicing thankfulness daily (just like @nswef described) is a great way to stay grounded and happy. You don't even have to write them down - just the act of thinking about it and saying it out loud once a day makes a difference.

Happy Thanksgiving everybody!

I do appreciate the sentiment of being thankful, and I plan to eat good food (tomato beef curry) and ignore football, which are the perks of having a solitary holiday. I may make turkey soup later this week.

I am cooking for the first time in 4 years because my son is helping. There’s 5 of us. I invited a friend who would have been alone and she is bringing pies. Happy thanksgiving everyone!!

We are baking a chicken. I couldn’t face the process of handling lots of turkey leftovers.

We have a very old foster dog here for a while who will probably get more chicken than she commonly gets in her diet. Not the skin, tho! That greasy, fatty stuff generates pancreatitis in dogs, especially in elders.

Happy thanksgiving. Yes it's a good holiday. The holiday madness that follows Thanksgiving I could do without.

Making turkey. Actually bought a regular turkey and a heritage turkey. But I'm just going to make the regular one and have heritage turkey one another week (in freezer), I've never had a heritage turkey, always wanted to try one. I have had heritage chicken, it's tasty but much stronger in taste and aroma than regular chicken. I don't think it's to everyone's taste but I am (gasp! noooo!!!!) a foodie so :laff: But fancy turkeys aside it's a good holiday.

I brined a turkey overnight and my brother is going to smoke it today. I also have a small ham. We'll have the traditional sides and desserts. There will be six of us - DH, me, daughter, brother, SIL and niece.

I don’t remember the last time we were with others at Thanksgiving. This year we are at a senior mobile home park in Texas and will share a meal where we all signed up to bring something. I never minded just having our own celebration but am looking forward to sharing a meal.

Last year we got a lovely take out Thanksgiving meal that lasted several days. This year we are going to a restaurant with Mom and one of her friends. Probably will have some leftovers too since none of us eats large meals. But that is kind of a bonus for us since we love leftovers.

Will be joining some siblings and their families for Thanksgiving. I'm making some salads and veggie sides. I love having a whole turkey to cook! I did get my "free" turkey from the grocery store and plan to cook it sometime this weekend... maybe Sunday. Will divide it up into meal size portions and into the freezer it goes. Make a bunch of broth, then soup from the bones. I can't wait!

Joining my goddaughter's extended family for Thanksgiving. I just have to bring pie (apple) and cheese. As a single, I am forever grateful I have never, up to this point, had to cook (or host) an entire holiday dinner.

Wishing you all a very Happy Thanksgiving!! We will be going to my sister's in our RV, taking the dog and spending the night so we can all hang out late in our jammies and play cards and board games then have breakfast and mimosas in the morning. T-day with our kids will be on our traditional Saturday since they work graveyard and get OT for both Thu/Fri. Sunday we are then taking off with them to the coast for several days where we will eat leftovers and they will mushroom hunt while I work on Christmas cards and read some new books.

Last year I had Thanksgiving at home due to Covid worries, and had Tofurkey. Thinking back to a year ago, while Covid is hardly gone, I am thankful for having a vaccine avaiible and relaxing at least some of the social distancing. And also not having to eat Tofurkey again, possibly forever. I'm traveling a short distance to have dinner with my brother and will fall off the vegan wagon for a real turkey meal, though certain meat products have lost their appeal, the other fixings are always good.

Adding my thanks to all of you as well. My life is definitely more interesting and enjoyable with my simple living 'family' in it. Hope everyone's day is filled with good food and good company. (Or quiet and peaceful solitude if that's your preference...)

"...And also not having to eat Tofurkey again, possibly forever..."

Even though I spent quite a few years as a vegetarian, I've never tasted tofurky.
From your reaction, that was a good decision on my part. :D

In my neck of the woods it was a good day to go out for a walk (19F in midafternoon) and keep an eye out for the "quick red fox"... see if he jumps over the lazy brown dog!

When I was vegetarian I did make two annual exceptions: Thanksgiving and St. Patrick's Day (man, I love corned beef and cabbage!). I figured my contributions to the animal world, environment and my health entitled me to two free passes a year. I've never had Tofurkey, but I don't like any fake meat--because they are usually miserable imitations of the real thing and I question how good they are for you. Too much soy is bad for you, and I can't imagine that those poseur meats aren't crazy processed to get them act like what they're not.

As for us, I did find a turkey (mentioned in another post that we had forgotten to buy the turkey!) but it was frozen and as hard as I tried to thaw it in time by using hacks I found on the internet (put it in cold water and leave it in a cool place over night) it will didn't thaw sufficiently. so we had a roaster chicken instead.
