View Full Version : People freaking I’m going to be off for 10 days

I’ve been at current job for 9 months. I get two weeks vacation a year. I didn’t take ANY days off and saved them so I could go down to north FL cave country and cave dive. Never been down there before.
As I’m a customs broker/do international shipping, my workload has to be covered while I’m off. My customs department coworker will do the vast majority of my workload. It’s a coworker or two the import department who are freaking out. They have to take back stuff that they used to do, that I took over when I started. One customer actually told me I needed to cancel my vacation. She was serious. Threatened to call the owners of my small company to have them cancel my vacation. I told her that was a crazy idea and how would she like it if I called her boss to tell him a vacation of hers needed to be canceled. She shut up immediately. There’s no reason for her to act like that. No massive amounts of stuff coming in. She’s just used yo dealing with me and wants it to stay that way.

It tends to be slower over the holidays. A lot of customers are taking both the 23rd-24th off, not just the 24th. Some close for the entire week between Christmas and New Year’s.

This is the first time ever I’ve taken a real vacation at the holidays and selfish twats want me to cancel? Screw that.

It really just shows how good your work and communication is with your customers. They are afraid that they won't get the same service with anyone else. My usual response is if I get hit by a bus, others have to be able to pick up the work and keep going. Of course the other employees are going to freak out because they are also afraid that something will happen. Have a great time.

That's awesome that you are getting to take a nice long vacation, and it sounds like it will be very enjoyable too!

If you did, it would get worse.

In 2017 my late bosses stepson, had a falling out with them, and quit. I was supposed to be going on a four day vacation, first time in 20 years, two weeks later.
The next week, his stepdad, had emergency surgery and was off for six months. I lost that opportunity (class that was scheduled), and worked 80 hours a week while he was off.
Now it is worse, he passed (similar thing) and I am now an owner.

Sounds like it is definitely time for a well-deserved vacation!

Hearing these stories makes me realize how lucky I am. One of my formal work objectives every year is to take at least 17 pto days and not check email or voicemail when out of the office. My email forwards to a group inbox when I am out.

Forgot to mention I get 7 days as it was prorated as I didn’t work the full year. So with Christmas being in on a Saturday, that gave me another day as we get the 24th off. So I took this Friday off to get a head start on my drive. 16 hours. Two days. Nashville will be my stopping point both ways.

That's awesome that you were able to work your vacation around the extra holiday time off. Honestly, everyone should be able to have at least one full week away from work every year where they don't have to think about it. The mental health benefit from being able to truly disconnect and unwind would surely make for more efficient employees during the rest of the year.

I look forward to reading about it after you get back. Drive safely!

Made it to Nashville. Just got here at 6pm. Drive was horrid. About halfway to Indy, I got stuck behind a huge electrical transformer being moved under state police escort. Cop at the rear decided to straddle the lane divider and kept speed at 25 mph. For about 40 miles. OMG. Then I had to take a big detour around Indy as the freeway through downtown is closed and Google Maps was showing almost an hour delay. So I had a 20 mile detour even though it was faster. Traffic in Louisville was nasty. When I went by Bowling Green, KY I saw houses and apartment buildings with partially tarped roofs. Lots of odd looking tree damage, very fresh. Lots of highway signs missing or wrecked on the side of the road.

Got Culver’s before I got to my hotel. Didn’t know they were down here. WI based and founded. The fish sandwich is awesome. Just wanted easy. Going to hit the road by 6 tomorrow so I can be to Atlanta early. It’s about 4 hours. Meeting a friend for coffee I’ve not seen since 2005 or so. She has something at noon so we’re going to keep it short.

Thanks for the update. Those large slow-moving rigs with police escort are frustrating. Enjoy your adventure!

I live in Indy and suffer thru trying to figure out how to get where with all the construction. The trucks having to go around on I465 lead to lots of slowdowns. When we went to Asheville this summer, the traffic and construction was so bad we decided to reroute our entire trip back which ended up being a good idea.

Tradd, though we often don't agree on various issues - you have always come across as a dedicated, hard working person. Life is short, no? On September 26th when I witnessed a close friend's ashes being spread in a canyon outside of Tucson, it really struck me how short our time here is.

Please put yourself first and take your well earned vacation. Doing so is not being selfish - doing so is akin to making it clear that you have boundaries and that you care about yourself. Rob

And I just scrolled up and read that you indeed did take your vacation and that you were in Nashville as you posted.

Good for you! Have a great time and don't let your job live rent free in.your head. Rob

Went back to work today. It was much better than I expected. There were a few things left for me that only I could answer, but they were handled quickly. Lot of emails to go through and sort/delete, but I was able to delete a lot of it and coworker handled everything while I was gone. Turned only a few files back over to me, mostly stuff that had gotten delayed even later than expected. Didn’t hear from anyone while I was gone. Lot of customers still on vacation.

Drive home was crazy due to snow I hit about several hours from home. Roads were a bit slick in IN. Only saw one plow until I hit the IL border. Then I soon saw three plow trucks staggered across all the lanes. Roads were they just wet the rest of the way home. Dealing with laundry and unpacking tonight. Work tomorrow then off Friday.

Glad to hear that you got home safely. And that work wasn't too crazy. And that your trip was a lot of fun (and that you didn't die like all those other divers...)

You're lucky you didn't have to deal with the snow in the Sierra. This afternoon I talked to one of the insurance brokers I work with regularly. He has a house up in Tahoe where he has spent most of covid (his primary house is in the east bay). His sister went up from the east bay for Christmas. She's a nurse so working remote isn't an option. She'd planned to go home sunday but that didn't happen. Monday that didn't happen again. Tuesday she finally left, early in the morning, because she had to be at work Wednesday and the two lane Highway 50 from South Lake Tahoe to Sacramento was "open". 18 hours later she was finally home. (for what is a 4 hour trip in regular conditions with normal traffic delays.)

Yikes! We have a winter storm watch for 4”-8”’on Saturday. Let my WI friends still in FL know about it so they could watch the weather for their drive home.

Lake Tahoe got snow again yesterday and it snowed in the valley most of the day. December hit a new record of 194” of snow in December at Tahoe.

I was off two weeks over Christmas. That ended up turning into 3 weeks due to snow and cat issues at home. I seriously paid the price when I got back. Person who was supposed to be doing my work stopped after the first day or two I was off. It took me 3 days of processing evidence for 8 hours straight to finally get caught up.

That’s too bad.

Yes but I knew that would happen. The lady has been here almost 10 years and still can't do anything without help. (Or she just doesn't want to and asks for help to get out of doing it). We are a very small office (4 people) and there are two of us who are workers and two that are slackers. Complaints go on deaf ears unfortunately. HR just don't fire them.
