View Full Version : Goals for 2022?

I'm seeking inspiration for some interesting things to shoot for this year. Covid is making it a bit more difficult because I'm not comfortable with the idea of a classroom situation right now. Hopefully that will change soon because I would really like to take classes at the local pottery studio this spring (Sis and DH would also like to do this). Sister and I also are interested in yoga classes, and also a gun safety course and getting our licenses. If carpentry classes ever start up again, that will move right to the front of the priority line without question.
So in the meantime, I want some modest goals that I can pursue solo. I would like to acquire some skills or accomplish some smaller projects that are practical and give satisfaction like the oyster shucking and building the spice cabinet.

I definitely want to start a bunch of annuals from seed this year. I'm good at buying the seeds, but not so much at actually planting them.
I want to tackle the botanical line drawing book that I never got around to in 2021.

I guess that's a start.

Thanks for starting the thread. I need to come to terms with this job. I don't like it, but it appears I have about 2-3 more years of working ahead of me. So...

1. download Spanish lessons onto my MP3 player to listen and learn while working
2. once the colder weather hits, tear up the old carpet in the room my computer is in, see what is underneath and proceed from there
3. get more organized with meal planning and grocery shopping. If prices are going up, I need to find ways to keep the costs within budget

That's it off the top of my head. I have a whole year, right??? :|( LOL

In terms of skills I would like to learn something new at work. I had volunteered to help with year end inventory but they never had me do that. But the inventory guy is very flaky with horrible attendance and openly talks about getting another job. So if he leaves I will try again. I think I could combine part of my job with most of his job. I will also keep my eyes peeled for other opportunities.

RR do you file your own taxes, and if not is that something you'd be interested in teaching yourself?

Rosa- if you are open to it, there are a lot of on line options available for classes. Yoga in particular.

For me, I intend to reduce the sugar in my diet. I tend to have something sweet after both lunch and dinner, and I have a plan to gradually reduce that over the year. I also want to spend less time on line aimless. Researching something specific is fine, but just checking forums and facebook is something I want to minimize by having more interesting alternatives.

And speaking of resolutions, here's a funny bit from last night's NYE show with Pete Davidson and Miley Cyrus. Not safe for work or for folks easily offended - I thought it was funny. https://youtu.be/_ijXvx12cgU

Jeppy: I have filed my own taxes all of my life, and I do them for one of my friends. Otherwise, that would have been a good one!
Herbgeek: Great video! You are right about online yoga and DH seemed like he would be interested in this too, although Sis wants to do an in-person class. Maybe I could start with online and then add an in-person class when the time is more favorable.
I do have a recipe I want to attempt this weekend. If it's successful, that would be a real feather in my cap, because my current repertoire consists of hard-boiled eggs, pasta salad, and salads in general. A fourth item would be a significant increase!

Rosa, You made me laugh. Good for you increasing your repertoire< i hope it turns out.
Last week I joined our Senior Center on line Exercise class. We can sign on to do any of the offerings for $60 for 3 months. I thought I'd try as there are dance classes, multiple types of yoga, yoga, tai chi then heavier, harder for me things. I thought it would be worth it as long as I do at least something a few times a week. I have enjoyed the Art class for free, so feel paying for the exercises is fair and well worth it. I'll let you know!

My goals
- get back into completing picture painting - too many UFO's. The walls are waiting
- the courses online with Wondrium are a to-do - drawing, and cellphone photography and practice locally

@Razz- how does Wondrium work? Is it pay per class or a monthly fee? I went to the website and there's nothing about that, only a "free trial".

Keep up writing in my journal. It’s cheap therapy I started in March 2020 during covid when I was laid off. I write at least once a week, but want to do it more often. Putting pen to paper is soothing. I use Moleskine notebooks. Large size, softcover. They’re about 5” x 8”.

Keep up going to the gym for the recumbent bike. Do dumbbell squats and other weight work at home every other day I’m not on the bike. Really helps my diving.

Finish my deco procedures diving class this summer. Improve my finning and stamina (with longer dives) to enable me to do full cave next winter.

I pay a monthly fee charged every 3 months on a CC with access online 24/7 to all that is available whether history, archaeology, arts, science, etc., and so much more. I don't know the monthly fee for the US subscribers. The fee is not supposed to increase if one maintains the subscription but may be cancelled readily.

Some are short courses for a single session, some have 6 sessions, some 24 -36 sessions. Most sessions are 30 minutes in duration. The basis, I believe, is the 13,000 courses from "The Great Courses" https://www.thegreatcourses.com presented by college professors within in their field of expertise. Added options from other websites such as Craftsy, documentaries, health info sessions make it quite a diverse, interesting source of education and info.

If I had had the option I would have been a professional student all my life. This gives me that option, fits my timetable and interest at a very modest fee.

There was a promotion at one point for C$10/month and I loved the courses that I had ordered from The Great Courses so I subscribed. I love it!

To grow lots and lots of plants from seed and then give them away.
To stop frittering time away on the internet.
To cut back on alcohol consumption. Currently at one beer and one bottle of wine a week. It's the compulsive habit of it I don't like when I used to smoke cigarettes long ago.
To figure out this year where home is and get there.

I saw that last night with DH/DD/DSIL/DS! It was really funny!

Thinking about my goals:

Work toward reducing all normal expenses (needs + wants) by 25%.
Work on house: refinish vintage pine floors; tile backsplash and behind woodstove; fix roof: decide on A/B/C of home renovation: a) just fix the roof and be done with it; b) repair roof but at the same time create a shed roof to allow more natural light in and install solar panels; c) build up one story with dormers to allow for more space for guests.
Devote more time to permaculture causes and projects
Devote more time to grandkids and their moms and dads
Get back on track with my Optimize routine of breathing/meditation/exercise/journaling/minimizing technology/nutrition/creativity.

Rosaragusa: Check out with Universal Class, it's free through your library and has a variety of topics from Science to Do it yourself.

Goals for 2022:

Cut back on pop, make it a special occasion thing. I'll finish or give away what I have and only buy one sleeve of the regional pop when I visit family.
Walk more often
Organize and inventory the yarn collection.
Declutter the utensils drawer.
Start and finish a t shirt quilt for me.
Finish UFOs
Get the spare bedroom ready for overnight guests. Currently no plans for guests, you never know
Remind myself that this is my year off from volunteering. (Finished a major volunteer project last year and promised myself a year off to avoid burnout.)
Continue the book cull

Sunday morning, I listed about 15 books that I have stacked up or in my book case that I had bought or were given to me and I haven't read. I plan to use the list as a springboard to get me back into reading again. Also - pay off a credit card. Last debt other than our mortgage.

I made the recipe and it was really good! DH was very impressed, because the only hot meal I've ever produced before was ramen noodle soup (admittedly, I had the bar set pretty low). I'm going to post the recipe on the "What's for Dinner?" thread.

I hope we all can accomplish most on our lists for 2022!
I try to set a goal each year of biking miles. It’s my little gold star for myself.
My by far biggest ever change I am attempting to make however and it is a major flaw in myself, so I know it will be hard but worth it. I am working on saying NO, not making myself a doormat, and biggest flaw feeling,,,,, like I have an Obligation to fulfill to everyone. I have spent a great deal of time thinking why this is me, when it happened in my life and has my feeling of obligation ever make me happy in the end.
It will be very hard, but I have made small steps!

rosarugosa
1-6-22, 10:20am
BikingLady: That sounds like a true challenge and I wish you good luck! Much harder than cooking dinner!

We did the virtual yoga class last night. DH and I were here and Sis was at her house, and we were all connected via Zoom. I actually liked it better than the in-person class I attended briefly a few years ago, and I really liked doing it from the comfort of my own home. I preferred this instructor's approach and of course, the fact that it was free was very nice. An in-person class would really just have the added benefit of the ability to make social connections, which is something this introvert should work on.

With the botanical line drawing book, I drew a leaf! It didn't come out very good, but hey, it's a start. I think "I drew a leaf" is probably the lamest declaration of accomplishment ever unless one is a quadriplegic learning to draw with a pencil in one's teeth, which thankfully, I am not, but I think this will actually prod me to do more with this, so that I can make some less lame declarations in the future!

I'm going back to what I started last year. There is a 2 hr dead spot in my day (mostly in winter and spring yucky months) that can easily become an internet or TV suck hole if I allow. I make an appointment with myself to go back into my studio and draw, paint or write for that block of time. This year I'll even throw in reading a novel for credit. I consider it my brain work out.

Excellent idea, simplemind. Good luck with it. And thanks for the suggestion - as I think about it, my job being what it is, I'm actually looking for some audio Spanish lessons to play while working.

I agree that I have that sinkhole time, and by that time, I've usually put in about 6-8 hours of brainpower. Even creation can be a brain drain. So, I love your idea, and I would aspire to do the same thing, but the idea of more thinking makes creation feel like work to me.

What can I do in a "creative space" during my dead zone that is more likely to free me from the shackles of my mind rather than demand more of it? Or how can I do it?

Don't laugh, but I use jigsaw puzzles for this. When I am working on one, my mind is shackle-free. I just relax and look for pieces. (Not sure if this is what you exactly mean or not.)

BikingLady: It's a challenge, remember to stay strong and that No is a complete sentence. It's something I did years ago and my only regret is not doing it earlier. You can do it!

Decided how I want to do the yarn inventory project, going to do a spreadsheet with each skeins quantity, fiber content, weight, color, bin number, and project (if any). Expecting another snowpocalypse this weekend so I will physically sort the yarn and place it in bins based on weight and number each bin.

Catherine I totally understand the feeling of brain drain. Doesn't matter if I've used it to solve the world's problems or I'm just feeling uninspired. That is why I put myself in the studio for the time out without expectation of what I may or may not produce there. I may watch a painting tutorial for a style inspiration instead of actually painting. I may read one of my many collected novels which always enriches the language I will use when I write. I may put on some tunes and break out a feather duster and clean the room or organize my supplies. Whatever it is.... I am putting the habit back into self-enrichment instead of settling into the couch cushions and anesthetizing myself with Judge Judy or Facebook. I often will go back there uninspired and end up staying longer being engrossed in something I didn't expect. An idea I had the other day was to go through my over 30 years of day planner/journals and pull out incidents of significance (which believe it or not, I tend to forget which is why I use them) so I can have a master list at a glance for later. That way I can get rid of the journals so nobody has to do it later. I've been asked so many times to write a blog or a book so this would be a way to gather material I have forgotten through the years.

I love these ideas! And in particular your 30 years of journals--I'm becoming worried that if I ever dropped dead, I wouldn't want anyone to read my journals, and I have been considering a similar approach to just pulling out key entries, maybe using the rest of the entries to construct a timeline of key events in each year, and then ditching all the self-indulgent blether about old boyfriends, frustrations with work and other useless scribble.

I can honestly achieve some of my best moments of "flow" working on a jigsaw puzzle. In a way I think that's too bad, since it feels productive but really isn't. But wait a minute! I guess it's just fun, for fun's sake alone, and that's not a bad thing, right?

I agree that I can see where you all get meditative flow from working puzzles. I get that from weeding in the garden.

I have no interest in doing puzzles, the concept bores me. Just as the concept of weeding gardens bores many people.

For good mental health we should probably all find the meditative activity that pleases us.

The take a year off from volunteering goal lasted all of 12 days. In my defense a friend asked me to take over her duties since her son is going through a medical crisis and advocating for him has turned into a full time job. it's just 4 days in November and no major responsibility is involved.

Am walking more since I decided to take a 3o minute walk during my lunch break and another 20 minute walk after I'm done with work.

Expecting another snowpocalypse this weekend so I"ll sort work clothes and make more progress on the utensil drawer.

I'm sticking to the boundary and one of my friends also took a different approach to volunteering. Texted him and asked to chat when he has free time. He works for a utility company so I don't expect to hear from him soon.

Project sort work clothes is complete. I kept 5 blouses (3 white, 2 ivory), two pairs dress slacks, one black blazer, and one suit. For work I need to be business casual from the waist up and I have non work dress up occasions covered. Rest of the clothing has been posted to the local Buy Nothing group and I will select recipients tomorrow afternoon, the roads are still slippery and I don't want anyone to feel pressured into picking it up tonight.
