The random side conversation about music on another thread got me thinking about the new music I like. Currently my favorite modern song is Bang by AJR: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4THFRpw68oQ Before I discovered this my favorite was Twenty One Pilots' Stressed Out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXRviuL6vMY I suppose a shrink would point out that it's curious that the first two songs that came to mind are about the struggle of growing up and becoming an adult. Especially since that phase of my life is so far gone that I'm now planning for, and looking forward to, retirement.

In any case, I get tired of listening to the same thing over and over and over so I'm always looking for new stuff to listen to. So what new music is everyone listening to?

Random detail. The off-screen announcer guy in the AJR video who keeps saying "Here we go." will be recognized by anyone who has spent much time in NYC since 2005 or so as the man in the NYC subway who announces at every stop "Stand clear of the closing doors, please."

Just found this interesting video of him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhH2eEG8gAc

JP: You really got me thinking about how little current music I know. I like both of the songs you posted, but I definitely preferred Bang. The voice of the subway guy's video was pretty interesting too. I may have mentioned it before, but I was told by a college professor that I had the most godawful Boston accent he had ever heard, and that I needed elocution classes. Well I never took elocution classes, so I still have a godawful Boston accent. :)
Will post on this thread if I can come up with any reasonably contemporary music that I like.

I enjoy any music that has a rhythm, melody and harmony. So much music is available from around the world that incorporates these three and is ageless. New instruments add a richness as do the historic instruments.

Try Habib Koite's Africa. I'm pretty sure he's not a household name. Celine Dion's French Album is another favorite of mine.

But I've just spent the better part of two days delighting in people's reactions to Bobby Hatfield's Unchained Melody. Awe, swoons, surprise--had me smiling for hours.

I spent the better part of two weeks a year or so ago watching YouTube reactions to Bobby Hatfield singing Unchained Melody on the Andy Williams show back in the 60's. Out of all the recordings of him singing it, I think that's the one where he really, really nailed it. Rumor has it his mother was in the audience and he wanted to impress her, I don't know if that worked but it sure impressed me.

The reactions of all these young YouTubers was/is priceless.

A commenter mentioned that one Cherilyn Sarkisian (aka Cher) was onstage as one of the backup singers that night. Don't know if that's true.

I'm always searching for new music for my playlists. I have several for the soundtrack of my life. I was always grumpy when I was (pre-pandemic) going to water aerobics and they were playing "oldies". For Pete's sake.... a little Big Bopper goes a long way. Give me something contemporary. Oldies to me is the '70's. I have lists to walk to, for reading, for sleeping, for painting, for meditating, for just about everything. I probably listen to music at least 12 hours a day. Bang, bang, bang!

Three White Horses, Andrew Bird, if you consider 2012 new? But it was new to me.

I suppose I consider new any artist that has been around for not more than 10-15 years, maybe 20? Anyone older than that is part of the previous generation. Still potentially "new", at least if they are still making new stuff, but with a different mindset from a different generation.

Some of my other "new" favorite artists are:

-The Avett Brothers. Their Tiny Desk Concert for NPR was amazing. That performance of "Laundry Room" was way better than the version on the album. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abQRt6p8T7g
-Mumford & Son
-Macklamore. I love so many of his songs, but this one makes me take a 5 minute dance party break when Pandora serves it up while I'm at work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGhoLcsr8GA
-Florence and the Machine. This is such a sad song, but so beautiful musically. And the video is mesmerizing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFA8-MNGVi4

THank you all for the suggestions. Off to check them out now!

Not necessarily new, but new to me is Gregory Porter. Saw him on The Graham Norton Show and fell in love with his voice and he seems like a really genuinely nice guy. I'm not a fan of jazz, but he can sing the alphabet and I'll listen!

Over the past weeks since I initially posted this I've been exploring AJR's complete discography (videography?) and I can say at this point that 1) I'm completely in love with the J of AJR. 2) I doubt that many people older than me will understand what he's trying to say with his music. and 3) they are willing to offer an opinion about the current zeitgiest: "if you're effing racist then don't come to my show." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1noRCUvsrM

I started an AJR channel on Pandora maybe a month ago with the goal of only liking stuff I'd not heard before so that it doesn't end up playing all the same songs as every other pandora channel I've made. I seem to have succeeded at that effort. Surprisingly this has resulted in me liking several songs by an almost 31 year old rapper named NF. This afternoon pandora served up one of his songs while I was at work and I hit the replay button a couple of times, turning the volume up each time. (no, it didn't turn into a one man dance party, as sometimes happens in my home office...) I think one of the things I like about rap is that the better rappers are more like poets that happen to have an interesting musical background to accompany the poetry.

Anyway, if anyone wants to hear the song that had me on the verge of having a one man dance party this afternoon here you go:

I agree that the best rappers are poets, as all good lyricists are. For an example of deft lyrics, I nominate Weird Al's Word Crimes.
Macklemore, being local, is someone I occasionally listen to and enjoy.

I'm not the most discerning of listeners; I found NF's video frenetic, in the way some rap music is. But I'm very fond of Eminem's 8 Mile, which strikes me as similar.

I keep wanting to come back to this thread, so I'm glad you posted again, JP. I have a lot to say, but then I am daunted when I think about typing it all, so I end up just having a monologue in my head (no typing!) and end up contributing nothing. Not cool.
So I'm going to just jump in and at least say something!
I mostly get exposed to new music on the radio, and I only listen to the radio in the car, and I'm almost never driving for more than 5 minutes at a time. Given the brevity of my drives, I want to hear something I LIKE, which almost always translates to something I ALREADY KNOW, so no new music for Rosa! Since you started this thread, I've been making a point of only changing the station if it's a song I KNOW and DISLIKE (or a bunch of commercials). Some of what I'm hearing that I like isn't really new, but newer, and new to me. A little bit of it is actually new!
DH listens to music a lot more that I do, but he mostly listens to older stuff, so when we're in the car together, that is primarily what we listen to. However, he has introduced me to a lot of the stuff I've come to like in recent years that was new to me, even if not exactly new, so he does have broader taste and knowledge when it comes to music.
I remember in the early nineties that I felt like I needed to expand my musical horizons. At that time was thinking about how music is often the backdrop to different experiences and stages of our lives, and that it would be pretty sad to only listen to old Alice Cooper songs from age 30 to the grave. I definitely expanded my listening repertoire at that point in my life.
I didn't start really listening to the Grateful Dead until 2004 and they have a pretty vast catalog, and then there are lots of related groups and other jam bands that have kept me busy for awhile.
So I think it's a good time to push myself to listen to more music that is new and/or new to me.
I heard this song recently on the radio, and I think some of it sounds like tired old Eagles music, but I do love parts of it. I don't seem to particularly like other stuff by this band though:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVh6XTwWhMY
And this is one that DH turned me on to last year that I really like, not exactly new, but Pokey Lafarge was new to me and I think he's kind of fun:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXzEVLSoVqw
I like your Pandora strategy, JP, and maybe I should try that. I watched the NF video and I liked it, but more the way I appreciate poetry or performing arts. It didn't feel that musical to me.

Like Rosa, I hardly ever listen to music outside of the car but I've noticed that over the past decade or so I've become attracted to bare bones, not overly produced music. Mostly songs with a story and minimal instrumentation.

I've previously bored everyone here with my fascination with John Prine, so I'll add a few of my current favorites to the mix. These days, when I do listen, it's mostly artists like Chris Stapleton, Tyler Childers and Billy Strings.

I can only add one video at a time so I'll start with Chris Stapleton and then just add the links to the other two.

One of the things I find interesting is that people listen to music differently. For instance, my college roommate was a music major like me. However, unlike me his principal "instrument" was voice. So when he heard a new song he tended to focus on the words. I, on the other hand, am only dimly aware of the words the first dozen or two dozen times I listen to a song. For me it's the overall sound that determines whether I grow to like a song or not, and then once I'm hooked I'll actually start to pay attention to the words. And with the NF song that meant listening really intently to it several times because there's a whole lot of words there.

My college roommate also took figuring out what he liked to a whole different level. Every month he would create a Top 100 list of his favorite songs, similar in concept to the Billboard Hot 100. And he would assign each song on his Top 100 list points, 1 point for #100, 2 for #99, etc. up to 100 points for the song at #1. Then once a year he would calculate artist totals of these points and add them to all the previous years' total points to figure out who his current "favorite artist" was. (When we were in college Joni Mitchell was his #1 artist. I have no idea who that might be today.) At the time he kept these lists in binders after typing them on a regular typewriter. I assume that at some point he converted to excel to simplify what was a very time consuming hobby. (It was also a very expensive hobby since he bought dozens of CDs every month.) As an aside he had also memorized the billboard hot 100 charts all the way back to the beginning. One could name any artist and he could tell you every song they had had on the chart, how high they went and how long they were on the chart. It was a very Rainman kind of thing to witness. Many of our other friends and I were really into classic rock from the 60's and 70's at the time so we would be listening to music and roommate would ask "who's this?" We would tell him and then he would ask "Is this song _____?" and when it wasn't he'd name more and more songs by the artist until he got to the correct one simply by running down the list in his head of all their songs that had charted. Often his guesses were wildly off base since he didn't have even a passing familiarity with most of the stuff we listened to, which made this a fun game for everyone.

Speaking of song lists, I once won $5.00 for correctly listing the top three songs of the week on a local "Dance Party" TV show. The songs were:

#2: Sugartown by Nancy Sinatra
#3: Snoopy vs The Red Baron by The Royal Guardsmen

I think it’s intentional that the ‘music’ is just the same five dark chords repeating endlessly and never resolving. Nate certainly doesn’t resolve his problems. If anything he seems to be spiraling further and further out of control, words and worries tumbling out faster and faster, until in the end, exhausted, he climbs in his cart to try and get some rest.

I think that this afternoon I will start a new pandora channel from this and try to cultivate it into a modern rap channel to see what I can discover.

Right now I mainly listen to music on my MP3 player at work. That means I only listen to what I have downloaded. Since I've been digitizing my cd collection, I will have more options to swap out, but they are all pretty dated - Carly Simon, Carole King, Beatles, John Denver, lots of classical, Queen, Reggae, etc. Actually, now that I'm looking at this list, it IS pretty varied.

And that was back when $5 was decent money. That probably was enough to buy an evening's worth of beer! (or were you still a bit too young to be in bars buying beer at that point?) And now I'm learning about "new" old music as well! Of these three artists literally the only thing I was familiar with before today was "These Boots Are Made for Walking" It's fun watching videos from the pre-MTV world.

Alan: I found the first two a bit melancholy, but I really like the Billy Strings tune, and my DH listens to that one all the time! I enjoy the lively strings sound. I remember when the movie "Deliverance" came out, and I bought the soundtrack because I loved "Dueling Banjos" so much (back when buying an album because you liked a song was a thing people did).
This isn't new, but it's one of my favorite songs in the whole world and I had the pleasure of seeing these guys live at MA MOCA in 2010 when they were still playing together.

Well, D... you guys.:~)
I am not going to get as much done as I should/need to today. I used to get more time to listen to the radio and used to listen to my ripped/mp3 music whenever I was on my computer. (just the stuff I owned, not everything I listen to, not enough money).
I have a couple friends in the industry, but they are mostly either working for artists I don't know or whose style of music isn't something I listen to.
Before Angie passed, we used to listen to music during work on Friday's, or try to remember artists, songs, etc. One of the last ones we were trying to come up with a song for every day of the week (example, I don't like Monday's, by the Boomtown Rats). When she came up with a song, and couldn't believe I had never heard it, but had been within a foot of the artist while talking with my friend that worked for them. Her husband asked me that story last week.
So this thread made me think of some songs.

OMG. That and the Otava Yo song were so fun! I love how the internet has made it so easy for anyone, anywhere in the world, to have access to everything else around the world. What charming videos. And so not American. Thank you for sharing them. I will have to follow these to see what else I can find!

As for my efforts to cultivate a rap channel on Pandora, I've succeeded. At least as far as getting Pandora to serve up lots of rap songs in a row. I've found that I can only listen to about an hour at a time. The problem is that most of it doesn't grab me musically the way NF did. But I hear the words flying past and get curious about that so I end up listening just from that standpoint, which isn't my normal way of getting roped into loving a song. And then I get bummed out because much of it is so dark and depressing lyrically, but I'm not getting the joy of a song I find delightful from a purely music standpoint. But I'll keep trying. Undoubtedly there are more rap artists than NF who are creating music that I will find enjoyable. I just need to find them or the specific songs they've done that will appeal to me aurally.

In the meantime I may have to see if Pandora has enough Slavic folk rock on it for me to cultivate a channel about that...

Yes, The Internet has made it very easy to find music that once, years ago now, would have taken a trip to another country to find.

On to Japan: I've followed Tsuji Ayano (つじあやの) for years now. She plays ukulele and doesn't utilize the typical histrionics of Japanese pop stars, though some may argue that she wouldn't qualify as a pop star. This song, which translates roughly to "Underneath the Sakura Trees" doesn't feature ukulele, but it's one of my favorite songs of hers.

Thank you for sharing. I've always been a fan of anyone who can play a guitar and sing and that was very enjoyable. Honestly, as someone whose instrument is classical clarinet I've always been vaguely jealous of anyone that can do that.* Much more fun at parties or when trying to impress someone cute. :~)

*even as far as classical music goes the clarinet is not particularly popular. When I was in college I used to do gigs with a friend that played flute. Typically we played stuff that had been transcribed from violin/viola duet to flute/clarinet. On more than one occasion the reaction people had when seeing us set up was along the lines of "Well, at least there's a flute. That will be nice."

So, I've been listening to my "rap" channel on pandora every few days and there's an Eminem song that has caught me. Godzilla. (lyrics below. Good god this guy sings so fast he makes the fedex commercial guy from 40 years ago seem like a rank amateur.) It's taken me a few dozen times listening to even start to understand the song. I definitely won't be trying this one at karaoke anytime soon, if ever...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_0JjYUe5jo

I can swallow a bottle of alcohol and I'll feel like Godzilla
Better hit the deck like the card dealer
My whole squad's in here, walkin' around the party
A cross between a zombie apocalypse and B-Bobby, "The
Brain" Heenan which is probably the same reason I wrestle with mania
Shady's in this bitch, I'm posse'd up
Consider it to cross me a costly mistake
If they sleepin' on me, the hoes better get insomnia, ADHD, Hydroxycut
Pass the Courvoisi' (hey, hey)
In AA, with an AK, melee, finna set it like a playdate
Better vacate, retreat like a vacay, mayday (ayy)
This beat is cray-cray, Ray J, H-A-H-A-H-A
Laughin' all the way to the bank, I spray flames
They cannot tame or placate the (ayy)
Monster
You get in my way? I'ma feed you to the monster (yeah)
I'm normal during the day, but at night turn to a monster (yeah)
When the moon shines like Ice Road Truckers
I look like a villain outta those blockbusters
Godzilla, fire spitter, monster
Blood on the dance floor, and on the Louis V carpet
Fire, Godzilla, fire, monster
Blood on the dance floor, and on the Louis V carpet
I'm just a product of Slick Rick, at Onyx, told 'em lick the balls
Had 'em just appalled at so many things that pissed 'em off
It's impossible to list 'em all
And in the midst of all this
I'm in a mental hospital with a crystal ball
Tryna see, will I still be like this tomorrow?
Risperdal, voices whisper
My fist is balled back up against the wall, pencil drawn
This is just the song to go ballistic on
You just pulled a pistol on the guy with the missile launcher
I'm just a Loch Ness, the mythological
Quick to tell a bitch screw off like a fifth of Vodka
When you twist the top of the bottle, I'm a
If you never gave a damn, raise your hand
'Cause I'm about to set trip, vacation plans
I'm on point, like my index is, so all you will ever get is
The mother****in' finger (finger), prostate exam ('xam)
How can I have all these fans and perspire?
Like a liar's pants, I'm on fire
And I got no plans to retire and I'm still the man you admire
These chicks are spazzin' out, I only get more handsome and flier
I got 'em passin' out like what you do, when you hand someone flyers
What goes around, comes around just like the blades on a chainsaw
'Cause I caught the flaps of my dollar stack
Right off the bat like a baseball, like Kid Ink
Bitch, I got them racks with so much ease that they call me Diddy
'Cause I make bands and I call getting cheese a cakewalk (cheesecake)
Bitch, I'm a player, I'm too mother****in' stingy for Cher
Won't even lend you an ear, ain't even pretendin' to care
But I tell a bitch I'll marry her, if she'll bury her
Face on my genital area, the original Richard Ramirez
Christian Rivera
'Cause my lyrics never sit well, so they wanna give me the chair
Like a paraplegic, and it's scary, call it Harry Carry
'Cause every Tom and Dick and Harry
Carry a Merriam mother****in' dictionary
Got 'em swearin' up and down, they can't spit, this shit's hilarious
It's time to put these bitches in the obituary column
We wouldn't see eye to eye with a staring problem
Get the shaft like a steering column (Monster)
Trigger happy, pack heat, but it's black ink
Evil half of the Bad Meets Evil
That means take a back seat
Take it back to Fat Beats with a maxi single
Look at my rap sheets, what attracts these people
Is my gangster, bitch, like Apache with a catchy jingle
I stack these chips, you barely got a half-eaten Cheeto
Fill 'em with the venom, and eliminate 'em
Other words, I Minute Maid 'em
I don't wanna hurt 'em, but I did, I'm in a fit of rage
I'm murderin' again, nobody will evade
I'm finna kill 'em, I'm dumpin' their ****in' bodies in the lake
Obliteratin' everything, incinerate a renegade
I'm here to make anybody who want it with the pen afraid
But don't nobody want it but they're gonna get it anyway
'Cause I'm beginnin' to feel like I'm mentally ill
I'm Atilla, kill or be killed, I'm a killer bee, the vanilla gorilla
You're bringin' the killer within me, out of me
You don't want to be the enemy of the demon
Who went in me, and be on the receiving of me, what stupidity it'd be
Every bit of me is the epitome of a spitter
When I'm in the vicinity, mother****er, you better duck
Or you finna be dead the minute you run into me
A hundred percent of you is a fifth of a percent of me
I'm 'bout to ****in' finish you bitch, I'm unfadable
You wanna battle, I'm available, I'm blowin' up like an inflatable
I'm undebatable, I'm unavoidable, I'm unevadable
I'm on the toilet bowl
I got a trailer full of money and I'm paid in full
I'm not afraid to pull a-, man, stop
Look what I'm plannin' (haha)

That's crazy--rap is definitely an art form all its own. But when it comes to rap, I'm sorry to admit that I appreciate a slightly more "highbrow" form of it. These are the lyrics to one of my favorite songs currently and definitely on my standard to-go and cleaning playlists:

How does a bastard, orphan, son of a whore
And a Scotsman, dropped in the middle of a forgotten spot
In the Caribbean by providence impoverished
In squalor, grow up to be a hero and a scholar?
The ten-dollar founding father without a father
Got a lot farther by working a lot harder
By being a lot smarter
By being a self-starter
By fourteen, they placed him in charge of a trading charter
And every day while slaves were being slaughtered and carted away
Across the waves, he struggled and kept his guard up
Inside, he was longing for something to be a part of
The brother was ready to beg, steal, borrow, or barter
Then a hurricane came, and devastation reigned
Our man saw his future drip, dripping down the drain
Put a pencil to his temple, connected it to his brain
And he wrote his first refrain, a testament to his pain
Well, the word got around, they said, this kid is insane, man
Took up a collection just to send him to the mainland
Get your education, don't forget from whence you came
And the world is gonna know your name
What's your name, man?
Alexander Hamilton
My name is Alexander Hamilton
And there's a million things I haven't done
But just you wait, just you wait
When he was ten his father split, full of it, debt-ridden
Two years later, see Alex and his mother bed-ridden
Half-dead sittin' in their own sick, the scent thick
And Alex got better but his mother went quick
Moved in with a cousin, the cousin committed suicide
Left him with nothin' but ruined pride, something new inside
A voice saying, "Alex, you gotta fend for yourself"
He started retreatin' and readin' every treatise on the shelf
There would have been nothin' left to do for someone less astute
He woulda been dead or destitute without a cent of restitution
Started workin', clerkin' for his late mother's landlord
Tradin' sugar cane and rum and all the things he can't afford
Scammin' for every book he can get his hands on
Plannin' for the future see him now as he stands on
The bow of a ship headed for the new land
In New York you can be a new man
In New York you can be a new man (just you wait)
In New York you can be a new man (just you wait)
In New York you can be a new man
In New York, New York
Just you wait
Alexander Hamilton
Alexander Hamilton
We are waiting in the wings for you
Waiting in the wings for you
You could never back down
You never learned to take your time
Oh, Alexander Hamilton
Alexander Hamilton
When America sings for you
Will they know what you overcame?
Will they know you rewrote your game?
The world will never be the same, oh
The ship is in the harbor now
See if you can spot him (just you wait)
Another immigrant comin' up from the bottom (just you wait)
His enemies destroyed his rep America forgot him
We, fought with him
Me, I died for him
Me, I trusted him
Me, I loved him
And me, I'm the damn fool that shot him (shot him, shot him)
There's a million things I haven't done
But just you wait
What's your name, man?

ok, at 8 years old this certainly doesn't meet my definition of new, but it's just such a weird video that I just had to share. I first discovered this a little over a year ago when I read a tweet, not understanding it, that read something like "What does the fox say? 'Lou Dobbs, you're fired.'" and had to dig deeper to understand what on earth the tweet was referencing.

Okay--I don't listen to music for lyrics; it's all instrumental to me. If I want words---I'll read. But yeah---some people want poetry or prose, set to musical instruments that don't get in the way of the message. See? It was funny how in the 60's, rock music made a departure from the sappy sentimental lyrics of popular music, to enigmatic abstract lyrics, that we were supposed to interpret after smoking some of that stuff. "Yellow matter custard, dripping from a dead dogs eye", instead of "Yeah, yeah, yeah, Meee-shell; I wanna hold yo' ham!". But yeah---it's all instrumental--even the vocals, to me. The sound is king. Yup. See?4637

Okay----My favorite tune o' the day is a recent(10 years or so) instrumental cover of a pop song I actually detested 40 years ago. But now--it's been made good. It's called: "One Hundred Ways", performed by the Joey DiFrancesco Trio. Joey was a prodigy and master of the Hammond Organ, who left us, recently. Yup. Several versions are on utube.

A friend just sent me this. I don’t know that it will become one of my long term favorites but it definitely brought me a moment of joy. I’m not sure what I liked more. That there’s someone out there in the world who raps about cats, or that he also has a bald cat furry friend who agreed to be in a video.

Oy--I'll re-iterate: lyrics generally leave me cold. I listen to music, for the music: the sound. If I want words, I'll read a book. See? But yeah---here's a re-recording iof a 1974 song called "Midnight at the oasis," the(contemporary) cuica remix, on youtube. They used the original singer, along with some nice new keyboard work. See? I also like the recent studio rework/mashup of Elton Joh's "cold cold heart" with Dua :Lipa and also featuring nifty keyboard work. I've got a million of them. Stay tuned.

I love Maria Muldaur, especially Midnight at the Oasis. I saw her live in Boston in 1974 (I believe was the year), and I was so disappointed that she didn't do that song. She also used to do some backup vocals for the Grateful Dead.

Bringing back memories, rosa! Just the mention of Midnight at the Oasis brings me back to May 1974, driving into NYC on my first date with DH with that song on the radio and the top down on his convertible!

That song definitely has the power to bring me back in time as well! It's kind of funny that we are discussing this on the "new music" thread. It is because the recording I referred to is relatively new, using newer technology than what was prevalent in 1974. See: "Midnight at the oasis--Maria Muldaur---Cuica Remix". For me, the vocalist isn't always the center of my music appreciation world. It takes a village to make a recording. But yeah--the tune was originally composed by a Jewish Buddhist from Manhattan, who lives up in Vermont. How do you like that?

Okay---Here's a good one that might give you an earworm after you hear it. It's "I Know....." by Dionne Farris, on youtube. See---SHE"S the credited performer, but there's a whole lot more to that record than her. She was in some hip-hop group, but I paid no attention. But yeah---that's a really energetic and lively tune, with a strong melody. And it's funny how 20 years have passed, since it was recorded. I listen to it, occasionally, maybe a couple times. Not all day and night, every day, forever. Justt once in awhile. Have no clue what the message is. Now way would I pay big bucks for a concert ticket, and take the time to go see her. Nope. I just like the sound of it. Hope that helps you some. Thankk mee.

This popped up on my YouTube list. It's a singer named Melody Gardot and she has a sort of jazzy Parisian style (born in NJ). The comments mention an accident she was in and she was in a hospital for a year. It's sort of rainy day at home music.

I like a little operatic metal now and then, old-school stuff I suppose it is.

It’s always a surprise to me, the metal singers who are classically trained. The lead singer in Disturbed was the last such one I learned about.

There is a whole subgenre of operatic and symphonic metal today. It's not really my cup of tea, though. I don't think the 2 mesh well. Being classically trained in voice or an instrument is an advantage, nonetheless.

Okay----there's a metal noise rock band based in I-Wah that calls itself "Slipknot", and believe me it's not music, it's noise. Just racket. I seriously question the sanity and intelligence of anyone who listens to them more than once. Yup. I figure that some of the kids like it because it annoys everyone else, as does cRAP. Hope that helps you some. Thank mee. Also, 60's pop idol Paul Ankas music--which enjoyed very good accompanying music, seems to creep into the present. You hear one of his hit recordings fairly often, somewhere or other. I'm no fan of Anka and his records, but I have to admit that his records were skillfully done. Hope that helps you some. BTW, Anka is the son of Syrian immigrants to the USA. Yup.

I had the local community radio station going the other day and they played a song from the new album, "Seth Avett Sings Greg Brown". I've seen Greg a couple of times live. He sings sort of story telling folk in maybe a down home midwestern style. When I looked up the new album they referred to Greg Brown as having a cult following. Oddly, I'd never heard of Seth Avett.

Okay---Here's the thing---the Anka songs that were hits had SOME things that were musically golden, BUT they are are somewhat unlistenable and uncool unless it provokes nostalgia or are kind of a music geek like me and see the best part. But see---I figure that good music should not be disposable. Like older buildings, they can be recycled by new musicians and producers who record cover renditions of older music. It could be note-for-note, or more stylized versions. But--it maty be that plagiarism liability has stymied the music industry, for awhile. So, using reverse psychology, music companies are releasing music to broadcast media that only appeals to the most antisocial members of society. I know--that's what the old fogeys said about the mop-topped foursome. But see--their music has been recycled. So yeah. Hope that helps you some. Yup.

"You're Having My Baby" by Paul Anka is truly one of the most vomit-inspiring songs of all time, in my humble opinion.

I heard a song the other day that I liked and thought it was new, "I'm Writing a Novel," by Father John Misty. It turns out that it's 10 years old, so only new to me, but certainly new by LBB's 20 year guideline.

"You're Having My Baby" by Paul Anka is truly one of the most vomit-inspiring songs of all time, in my humble opinion.

Zackly--R/R. THE major flaw in Anka songs are the sappy, whipped-male lyrics. So yeah---they'd have to be rewritten with new lyrics by an aspiring Rapper. Yup. All except for: "And they called it "Pup-pee Loooove........" which I think was also covered by Donny & Marie, bro & sis couple. A significant number of people of Middle Eastern descent whose immediate ancestors emigrated to the USA have had a gift for composing Western popular music, and they've contributed a lot of it. Look at the songs that came out of the Brill Building etc.,, last century. I could start a thread, naming names. Yep. Thank Them. And Thank Mee. (See photo of Donny, singing about puppy love). 4987

Okay---Another pop-rock classic by a Teen idol over a half-century ago was "Lightening Strikes"(1965) by Lou (Luigi) Christie who co-wrote the melody/lyrics. But, what makes the recording so golden is the accompanying instruments and stuff. A very lavish production, that has distinctive guitar riffs that are nearly heavy metal, and a chorus straight out of motown, among other things. Plus, the song was tailored to his voice. The heck with the sappy lyrics. But yeah---it was a masterpiece, though no way would I pay big bucks for a concert tickick to hear him at age 80. I figure he wouldn't pay to hear me sing, either. Nope.

Okay---Here's an assignment for you kids. Listen to this particular recording; it's not new new; in fact it was recorded before mosta you kids were born--1972. But yeah--it is: "Don't Say You Don't Remember", sung by Beverly Bremer and accompanied by orchestra and band instruments and electric bass. But yeah---it's a Brill Building special, written by Estelle Miller and Helen Levitt. You know who they are, don't you? A very(xxx444) catchy pop ballad. Yup. Hope that helps you some. Thankk Mee.

Okay---Then, listen to the recording of "Make Me Your Baby". as sung by Barbara Lewis waaay back in 1965. It's still NEW music, compared to Beethoven or whoever. But yeah--it's got sappy lyrics, written by a Roger Atkins, but the melody was composed by Helen Miller, tenant in the Brill Building. Yup. I've got some more, as soon as you get this one listened to. Yup. Barbara Lewis is a "3-hit wonder" if I may take the liberty of saying so. She had two other songs that got radio & tee-vee exposure, back in the day. "Baby I'm Yours" (Ha.)and also: "Hello Stranger", which also was covered in the 70's by Yvonne Elliman. Yup. Okay Bobby Vinton is 87, and I passed on my chance to see him at his theater in Branson, way back awhile. Branson experienced a boom, and now the Brand Name acts have left, due to attrition.

The reactions of all these young YouTubers was/is priceless.Okay---In case you kids did not know, this song is another classic belonging to the subgenre, Brill Building Music. Yup. Okay---I found another Brill Building Era Classic(or Tin Pan Alley)that was a radio hit for Mel Carter back in the 60's, and others before that. I just didn't like Carters rendition, but it stuck in the back of my mind. Well, here is a Youtuber that renders this one golden: it's Dani Alcedo singing: Kiss me, hold me, love me. Okay--here's some more, even though they are by no means recent. But, I like 'em, and need to recommend them. You have an oldie of Mark Lindsey(of Paul Revere & the Raiders, which was popular in the PNW, back then)singing:"And The Grass Won't Pay No Mind", which Neil diamond composed. The Raiders also recorded at least one other Brill Building song, "Kicks", which was turned down by Englands' The Animals, though they did record several other Brill Building songs that were big hits. See? Yep, there was a big music factory in NYC. If I'd ever have a reason to visit that city, I'd make a trip by to see that place, even though it is now used for other business uses, including a CVS Pharmacy. Hope that helps you some. To be continued. Thankk mee.

Okay---You also have the music of Neil Sedaka, who is(or was)a singer/songwriter in the Brill Building starting as a teenager, but an entertainer, as well. He's retired, unlike "Carts", because he did it all, already. The other night, I sat-n-watched several Sedaka-in-concert videos, made when he was prolly in his 60's, and He was excellent. He is very under appreciated, on the whole. And then for as long as I could stand, I sat-n-watched pathetic concert videos of "Carts", performing (ha)at age 80 this year. Sorry, but he doesn't need the money, and the aged teeny-boppers who paid big-bucks and then drove and drove to stand in line and sit and watch "Carts" need to get checked for dementia. All there is to it. Hope that helps you some. Thankk mee.

Okay----Here's another one for you kids---only it is not a Brill Building song, but a Nashville song that is from that era and musically very similar. Just keep in mind that Dinah Shore was a Tennessee native and thought of a a southerner. Jo Stafford(among others) recorded this one and it was NUMBER ONE in 1952. Yup. Anyway, here's a recent rendition of that song by a U-toober from a few years back. It's called: "You Belong To Me", performed by Midnightfirefly14. No High Dollar Carts Tickicks Required. She's described herself as "just a girl who loves music", and recorded many covers at her home. Yup. You kids must watch them all. Hope that helps you some.5005

Okay---In case you kids did not know, this song is another classic belonging to the subgenre, Brill Building Music. Yup. Just like (some) songs made famous by Elvis, Bobby Vinton, Bobby Vee, The Animals, Paul Revere & Mark Lindsey; and many more. Yup. Here's a photo. Thankk Mee.4998

Paul Simon’s office was/is in the Brill building. I had a letter from his office, signed by his disgraced business manager who stole thousands from him. The letter authenticated a songbook as the real thing, a gift from Simon to his CPA. The songbook ended up on the rare book market where I snagged it 40 years ago.

i sold it a coupla years ago and amusingly, it went to a buyer in Manhattan. “Amusingly” ” because it was born in Manhattan, then came to live in the Midwest for decades, then went back home.

Wasn't this interesting? Hope that helps you some. Thankkk meee.

Okay---I just read that we lost Dino Danelli, recently. He was a drummer, and underrated, at that. I mean--when someone says "drummer", no doubt you kids think of Ringo Starr. Well, don't you? Ha. Anyway, Dino wasn't working out of the Brill Building; but he was from just across the River in Joisy. Yup. He was one of the founding members of the Young Rascals, a great Canadian-Italian-American pre-punk Band, that had its own sound. . But of course, it is unfortunate that they are all but forgotten, now. Every now and then, I review all of their Hits on youtube, including their appearing on TV with an intro by Alan King. You can too. Hope that helps you some. Thank Mee.

Value depends greatly on condition, though. But, I think you should hang onto it, since there is VERY little good music being made, these days. Just cRAp, pop country, and Cracker music and more cRap.. They have a restored 1920's mooo-vee theater here, that started out being a venue for people with sophisticated taste in music. Meaning: Kenny G. Several jazz combos canceled, due to low advance tickkick sales. Ha. But yeah---That did not turn out to be viable. So now, they mainly feature Cracker music Acts(Americana), to sell tickkicks. See---I went to a Imagine concert, supposedly a tribute to Lennon, about 13 years ago. But, it turned out to be all local-yokel hillbilly music acts. That, and crime is what is really bad about this area. Yup.

It is playing in an endless loop in my head, but that's OK, because it makes me happy, although I may drive DH crazy because I also sing it aloud fairly often. https://youtu.be/SMWi7CLoZ2Q TYVM, RR. I listened to both vids, and am wondering: Whats so sketchy about vid #1? Looks like normal kids in da hood w/their skanks and the chevelle they just stole. #2, the num num song would have to be adapted to my catts with a bass drum to give it a jungle sound. They don't just eat, they feast. But yeah---that's new music. I found a youtube video of a young woman in Fla named Tiffany Misenko playing guitar and singing a(sentimental) song she says she wrote. It sounds like a Garth Brooks tune, though. It's pretty good for an amateur, though. It's a little tough to find, as the tube has buried some of the obscure vids under a ton of monetized vids. Hope that helps you some. So anyway---On the subject of Garth, there was a Garth concert near here, last fall. It was at a rural, outdoor venue. I have no clue how much those tickicks cost; prolly a days wages or more. So---what happened was, in the aftermath, many concert goers were outraged and demanded a refund, because they were stuck out in a traffic jam and couldn't get parked before the concert started. Some commenters online rebutted that they "shoulda left home sooner", just to add fuel to the fire. But yeash---it was a big issue for several days. As youi might expect, I didn't buy tickicks & stayed away. Got enough controversy, as it is. See?? Hope that helps you some. Thankk mee.

Okay----This is not new music, unless you've never heard it, before. But yeah--I've been listening to 4 of Hamilton, Joe Frank, & Reynolds Greatest hits. One of them is from when they were the touring band playing the made-for-radio song called: "No matter what shape.....", which was a jingle for Alka-Seltzer. But then, the group was named eponymously for the next two songs, until they changed keyboard guy. They were still billed as Hamilton, Joe Franmk and Reynolds, but Reynolds was not actually in the group at the time. Some other guy was. But hey---their keyboard work got better. See? But yeah---the strength lay in Dan Hamiltons' Vocals and the keyboard work. Hamilton was originally from Spokanistan, & died in 1994. Anyway--Lyrics were sentimental, so IO paid no attention. Just the sound. But yeah---one is called: Winners And Losers. Also, you might listen to their other two hit songs. It's definitely what I call: "Up North" music, and not popular, around here. Okay--Not "New" music, but new if you still pay to see McCarts, and other elderly performers. But yeah--from the early 90's(30 years ago) a group called" The Ocean Blue", originally based in Penna., where chocolate is made. But the genre of their music is: Alt Jangle Pop Rock. It is VERY jangly. I bought three CDs of theirs, and they are awesome and amazing, all the way through. It's my understanding that they released other albums since then, but I haven't heard them. What is Alt Jangle Pop Rock? Well, one of the most successful albums of that genre of all time was REM's "Out Of Time". You've heard at least some of those songs, whether you realize it or not. But yeah--the leader of The Ocean Blue, David S., went to law school, moved waaaay up dere ta da Twin Cities, and has been the Atty for (the late) Prince, for years. BTW, I'm not a fan of P's music. Okay---This is not new music, either. But yeah--in the fall of 1968, we emigrated to Alaska, initially to Fairbanks for a coupla months. We lived in the Northward Building, a 14-story skyscraper that had been built in the very early 1950's. It had bright aluminum siding, and the pipes were exposed to living spaces, maybe to keep 'em warm, or to fix 'em, if need be. But that didn't bother me; Fairbanks was a nice town--in the fall.. Anyway--I bought 2 45-rpm records, and since I didn't have a record-player at "home", I took 'em to the so-called language lab in the lirrrarrry at Lathrop High and played them on their cheap, earphone-equipped record players at luinch, along with my 59-cent sack o' bbq tater chips. But yeah---I played 'em quite a bit, while I was there. Then, 3 renditions of "You Get What You Give", first by The New Radicals, and the two really good covers of the song by latino groups. There's actually one by Leo Sayer, but he just didn't quite get it right. And then, there's a rendition of Fred Neils' "Everybodys' Talkin', that Nilsson made famous, but the one I like on youtube is by Jim Ramsey, who appears to be street busking. But yeah-his is y favorite. He's got an acoustic guitar connected to an amp that also gives it a tremelo effect. Yup. Pandora has been serving up Beck's "Up All Night" a bunch recently (I've avoided doing an all out dance party in the middle of my work day so far but admit that when it comes on I usually stop working, turn up the volume and chair dance to it) so I looked up the video today and it's totally not what I expected. Based on the words I assumed it was a song about sex. But no, it's a song about a girl who gets super powers from her asthma inhaler who then goes to save her friend who's in a drunken stupor at some creepy party. Hmmmm. Recorded 6 years ago it's not exactly new, but newish to me so good enough for this meandering thread.

Personally I'm a bigger fan of Nilsson's "Without You". For an admittedly very specifically personal reason. My favorite aunt who I, as a teen, regularly visited without the rest of my family, had a '78 Ford LTD that had the fancy pants "quadraphonic" sound system. It was very impressive for a car sound system at the time and came with a sampler tape that was specifically made in quad. (It was basically an 8 track tape that only had two segments instead of 4 like a standard 8 track since it used up twice the tracks to make the quad sound.) The tape started with a recording of Thus Spake Zarathustra that started in one speaker and then worked up to two, three and all four... Since there were virtually no quad tapes for sale this was the only one my aunt ever had so we spent countless hours driving places (she lived in the middle of nowhere in western kansas so everyplace was a long drive away) listening to this one tape which had Without You on it. The other songs on it just didn't capture me the way this one did and I couldn't even tell you what else was on it, although every once in a while one of them will be playing somewhere I'm at like a bar or whatever and suddenly my brain will go "OMG, remember when you and Aunt E were driving to Garden City and this song was playing???"

Yup. After countless trips there as a kid and teenager that's pretty much my impression of western Kansas. Just pave the road, move the fences a bit further away from it and flatten things out a bit and it's identical. It's only by the grace of god, or at least the grace of the US postal service, that I didn't grow up there. Okay, new music that is actually new - with OBSCENITY ALERT! You might find this offensive if you dislike profanity, so don't say I didn't warn you. Backstory is that I first heard this song on the radio. Of course, one often cannot make out all the lyrics to popular music, so I didn't realize they were blurring out a key word in the chorus. I just figured they were saying something like "I will love you," or I will hug you." Um nope, it wasn't either one of those. But it's a really catchy tune and I love the costumes and theatrics and the energy. Apparently they are about to do their first tour in the US. The name of the band is The Last Dinner Party and the song is "Nothing Matters."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pETz4IMmeDU

Then they released another one, "My Lady of Mercy," I believe only this week, so about as new as you can get. No obscenities, although the lyrics to both songs don't exactly resonate deeply with me, to say the least. I'll go with LBB's musical philosophy here and kind of disregard the lyrics and enjoy the rest.

Local radio played a track from Bruce Cockburn's latest "album" and I went to my music source and listened to the whole thing. He's 77 or 78 and has a bit of a rasp and not the range he once had, but it's really nice music. He's sort of faded into obscurity these days, butt from the same Canadian era of Neil Young and Gordon Lightfoot. "O Sun O Moon". When was the last time you sat down and listened to a whole "album" at once of new music. It had been a while for me.

okay----there's a big media push here in little ol' sfd, to promote a local kid who went ta hollyweird & evidently sings, tho i ain't never he o' her/it/him. but yeah--it's our hometown homo, and of course---all the fanaticratz here are behind her/it all the way, on account of her ideology/lifestyle. But yeah---basically, the anti-hillbilly. See? it calls itself chappel roan, though it has a real name that indicates her people are recent come-heres, prolly from San Loiusco. yup. She no Dolly Parton, thats fer shurr.

She was born in Willard, MO. She changed her birth name (Kayleigh) at some point like many artists do. No indication that she, like any other human being, is an "it." I'm not surprised that I'm not into her music, being 72, but no reason other people might not like it.

All of a sudden I am hearing of Chappelle Roan everywhere. This is the 4th mention in less than a week.

This is the 4th mention in less than a week.okay----well, yah---media hype about an alphabet person. see? i went & listened to summa her noise, and there's nothing distinctively good about it. i'm not saying that because i'm an old fogey or a hatemonger; im saying that because it is true. all there is to it. thankk mee.

okay-----i just read that last year, Mr John Hinkley jr was releasing an album of his songs, called: "Redemption". but yeah---i know you kids weren't even born when Mr Hinkley allegedly attempted to assassinate the President, but he was found innocent, owing to insanity. So, anyway----he's got a new career going as a singer-songwriter. Yup. maybe THAT will get Jody's attention.

okay-----new music by Dua Lipa, which is new to her, but actually a decade older than she is. See? I enjoy two songs credited to her, butperformed by her production team. But yeah---her two recordings I appreciate are retro-80's disco music. One is titled "Levitate", (the one that does not feature a rapper in it), and the mashup that samples one by Elton John. They both were released about 2020. But yeah--I enjoy the compositions. But, not gonna pay $200 or so to see her in concert. Nope.

okay---this isn't new new music, it's several years old, from a moo-vee soundtrack. it prolly sounds REAL good on the sound system in a moo-vee theater; the blutooth headphones i use with my iPhone make it sound good enough. It's a rather short tune called "Jacob and the stone", and some guy about 38 years old composed it. Don't know if he used electronica or a real symphony orchestra; it sounds like the former. it's on youtube. it really shoulda be worked into a longer composition, with the same theme. but yeah---it's very moody and gothic sounding.

okay----did you kids look up melle baby on the net? See---she has a lot o' stuff, some of it is short guitar riffs, some is her own, but what i appreciate is songs she covers that i did not appreciate by the original artists--mainly post-grunge groups. She is versatile, and has a rangey voice, & very precise. Plus, a very competent guitar player. i'm not sure what the deal with her is; maybe just independent & willing to be a cog or what. But very, very talented.

okay---nobody's been on this thread awhile, but that figures. so anyway---here's what i would recommend; no, that doesn't mean a massive drive-n-eat and $300 dollar tickicks. nope. But yeah---heres somebody to follow on the net, and listen to, occasionally. but yeah---Jake Chapman, percussion master--Marimba, Xylophone, etc., etc.

I've taken notice of "Leonid and Friends". They are from Russia, Ukraine, and Moldova but sing cover songs of American hits. Story goes that one of the musicians left the band to fight for Ukraine. I'm not sure what it takes to become viral, but they seem to meet the mark. They are touring the US now and playing in a big city downtown theater locally. They are fun to listen to, but really seem to be having fun in a live performance. An old Earth Wind and Fire song.
