I sang this lullaby when I tried singing in a local choir. What triggered this thought, Dado? Who was singing it when you 'got it'?

razz,
I was watching Youtube videos, as an armchair travel escape. The fickle finger of youtube took me to Cape Breton. I could not help noticing the appreciation local crowds were showing to local musicians. The fiddler in one group sincerely thanked the audience in response to their applause.
The Cape Breton Lullaby was new to my ears. I listened to a recording made by the Toronto Children's Choir (accompanied by piano). It seemed poignant as well as timely to be singing about father going to sea to avoid "rack and ruin", and praying that he not be lost at sea. (I believe many are heading into hard times if they aren't there already!) Bit by bit I got the meaning of the lyrics from repetition (easy and enjoyable on youtube). But I was not able to decode "Caidil gu la laddie" without searching up the lyrics on the Internet.
The lyrics are interesting in the variation in the line: "sleep the bleep away": night, stars, etc
As you are probably aware but so many maritimers around the world never knew if they were returning from their adventures and their families learned to pul together to cope, even survive. In your armchair travels have you noticed that it is often from the remote communities that sailors and fishermen come? It seems to be true in the Canadian east coast areas. DH was from the Maritimes so we toured it quite extensively.
ETA: sea shanties have really returned to prominence.

In that Cape Breton singing, I may have been hearing something of Father Moses Coady (1882-1959).
The StFX Man from Margaree was brilliant, in my humble opinion.
