View Full Version : Luxury Beliefs
I heard this term for the first today, and it kind of rings true to me.
It refers to a person enjoying some level of wealth and privilege espousing some ideal for which others must sacrifice in order to claim a sort of unearned moral superiority. Like people who live in safe neighborhoods demanding to defund the police. Or people who oppose school choice as a threat to public education while they exercise the choice of living in an affluent school district or private schools.
Ideology as a status symbol.
Is that sort of the same as the term "first world thinking"? I am finding the first world term being used so often these days.
I've never heard that term before but it appears to have been around for a couple of years, and I like it! I can see that it easily applies to virtually every wokester, ever.
Eric Adams is exhibit number one. He and his cronies don't have to wear masks. The entire burden of keeping NYC "safe" falls on children under age 5, who breathe through their snot rags all day in childcare centers and preschools. If I were a violent person I would assassinate him.

But at least other politicians are worried about the kids even if Adams isn't. Adams wants to go to the extreme of eliminating chocolate milk from public school lunch rooms!!! Can you imagine??? But thankfully Elise Stephanik is on it. If her efforts are successful those kids won't be denied their god given right to have sugar milk at lunch. Maybe if you send her a note she would modify her goal to include the right of kids to contract and spread covid!

When is the last time you saw a toddler correctly wearing an N95 mask all day?
Oh that's right - you wouldn't because you sit maskless in your house all day working from home and you don't have kids.
Adams hanging out in packed stadiums unmasked isn't a problem, it's all on the toddlers.

.
I assume I see toddlers wearing masks all day about as often as you do. But by all means keep letting your OCD cause you to hijack every damn conversation on every damn topic on this board just to satisfy your sad sack hatred of masks.

I see you are still luxuriating in your luxury beliefs.

I had never heard of this before so, of course, I googled. Found this: https://medium.com/@austinjcerny/what-are-luxury-beliefs-6088f8a16197
Quote from article: In Henderson’s words, Luxury Beliefs are “Ideas & opinions that confer status in the upper class while inflicting costs on the lower class.”
And: All these Luxury Beliefs, in my opinion, are coming from good intentions & a proclivity for open mindedness. Probably.
But when they are adopted & construed by socially powerful communities into a symbol of virtue, these beliefs then go from good to harmful. Because the people who signal these beliefs are NOT the ones who live out their consequences.
Definitely need to think on this more.
Here's an example of a luxury belief:
"Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth."
Now Eric Adams wants to remove the vaccine mandate because baseball season is coming up and one of the Yankees stars is not vaccinated. But the toddlers will keep wearing masks because they don't vote or have any clout. Meanwhile, Adams can now take more maskless photos hanging out with his buddies - this time at baseball stadiums.

A blatant statement of human privilege.
Creeping things’ that creepeth upon the earth lives matter!

That definition makes me think of the celebrities who lecture the masses about environmental responsibility while living in sprawling mansions.
I see you are still luxuriating in your luxury beliefs.
I don't think it has anything to do with my status as a relatively wealthy person that I think hatred of masks is just pathetic whining. There was a video a while back of some stupid anti vax idiot protesting in downtown LA. She was whining "If covid was so dangerous how come all these homeless people aren't lying dead in the streets?" to which one of the homeless guys walking past shouted back "Because I'm vaxxed you dumb eff!" I suspect he'd share my opinion about whiny anti-maskers.

You're conflating a bunch of things -
Anti vax and anti mask
Opposing measures and opposing government mandates for measures
If you were a poor frontline worker who had to be around people 40 hours or more per week I doubt you would still be clinging to the mask. You would be so over it by now, and would have seen that the disease is age stratified. The CDC just revised down the number of pediatric deaths by 25%. Yes, they were exaggerated.
I have to laugh when I see my Board of Health running a vaccine clinic and despite offering prizes to kids only one person shows up. If they were smart they would be going to the nursing home and boosting people. They're not saving any lives.
That definition makes me think of the celebrities who lecture the masses about environmental responsibility while living in sprawling mansions.
Or the celebrities who fly all over in private jets lecturing people about emissions.
Or the celebrities who fly all over in private jets lecturing people about emissions.
John Kerry explained all that when he flew to Iceland to pick up an award. It was “the only choice for somebody like me”. You wouldn’t expect somebody like him to book some commercial flight like a common peasant, would you?
I used to see this a lot when I lived in Austin. Especially around things like housing or mass transit. They would banter for multi-family housing and mass transit options but "not in our neighborhood".

not voting for expanded funding for covid treatments, when you as a (Republican) congressperson probably have access to them anyway.
It’s funny that anyone is still listening to yopej’s tears regarding masks. Back on may 4, 2020 before Massachusetts had even implemented a mandate you were whining about them after having just worn them briefly in a couple of stores. Then over time you shifted to the ‘all day’ thing that is so awful because all of had been wearing masks for varying lengths of time without having any problem and you figured we’d forget that you bitched and moaned about any mask for any length of time back at first.
Why I should trust your random assumption about how I would react to wearing a mask all day at work is beyond my comprehension.

158 deaths were attributed to covid-29 yesterday in my state, down from a high of 252. Hospitalizations and ICU beds devoted to covid are also down. But our dictator governor is not satisfied with improvements no matter how substantial and keeps tightening the vise. Masks are mandated starting Wednesday. Ohio"s governor realized people did not want a mask mandate and rolled it back, but not in my state. Baker was the most admired governor in the country. I bet that changes. Two adjacent states are opening back up, but even the rural largely spared parts of our state are not. Local media are not covering the protests here. I have to find out from the national media.
I wore a mask this weekend 3 places. 1 I was fine as it was early in the day. The other 2 it was later, warmer, and the businesses were not running A/C. I felt nauseous (gas station removed it as soon as I got outside) and claustrophobic and faint (another store - I took it off as staff weren't wearing masks, but in 2 days I lose that right). If this mandate is interpreted that I have to wear a mask for 8 hours a day at work I will probably pass out.

I was prophetic in the snippet of mine you quoted. Baker became so unpopular he decided not to run for re-election. His lieutenant governor was tainted by association and is not running for anything either.
In what I read the other day is the most liberal state in the country we have a real contest in the upcoming Republican primary between a Trumper and a Baker type.

I really like you jp1 and I hope you don't take offense at this, but YOU seem to be the one who is mainly listening - and responding - to jeppy - at least here on the forums. There is definitely a disorder there - in her not you - and I'm not sure exactly why you continue to participate in exchanges, but good for you in giving her exchanges to participate in.
Again, definitely no offense intended to you as I do enjoy you and your posts! :)

He's going back to 2020 combing through my old posts but I'm the disordered one here. Allrighty!

To be sure I have my issues. Thankfully none of them is being so delusional that I think that fighting mask mandates is what a fictional character who lives in the sky wants me to dedicate my life to doing.

I think there are plenty of folks who enjoy a good debate, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe JP is one of them and that Jeppy also falls into that category. I can remember a time when "The Peggy and Alan Show" in the Simple Public Policy Forum was a great source of entertainment, and it always seemed that the two of them genuinely enjoyed the verbal sparring.
In recent years, I think the trend here has shifted more towards those who dislike confrontation, and perhaps even err on the side of feeling attacked if someone strongly disagrees with them.

What are “expanded Covid treatments” and what legislative bodies refused to “vote” for them?

it was in the omnibus bill and killed by Republicans but some Dems were also doing some weird thing, so now noone knows whether Pavloxid and Evashield (for immunocompromised) will be available etc.. Or sequencing variants etc. (not that the U.S. was ever good at that compared to the countries that were). Or developing future vaccines, being that these ones wear off, aren't entirely protective, and new variants are coming. A pan coronavirus vaccine would be ideal (and maybe someone has one since the Army supposedly developed one but who knows), but probably much easier to at least get a nasal vaccine to stop spread. Some research was going on in that, hope it gets funded to completion, maybe not with funding getting cut.

Yes, I DO love a good debate. Almost as much as I love good wordplay. Life for me would be a hellebore without both!

My father gave up a promising career because he absolutely hated arguing (and he wasn't keen on public speaking, either.) I am clearly my father's daughter.

The last time I was in Nogales, AZ I stocked up at the Goodwill Clearance Outlet. Picking through all the wheeled bins of used goods, I found a fake Prada women's wallet (that even had a made in China tag inside it) and a fake Louis Vittion purse. Even first world luxury items can be cheapened it seems. Rob
