Finally got DH to look at a box of old papers he brought back from his parent's house. There are old documents (1910-1933) within showing that his grandfather invested in oil wells and and land lots in various places. We have no idea if any of these are worthwhile to chase down or even how to start. I am tempted just to put it all in an envelope and hand off to one of his siblings. Chances are they are worthless, right?

There has to be more than one lawfirm in Texas that specializes in this. This is such a Texas thing.
I have seen stuff about these and inheritance on City Data, so you might want to try doing a search there.

Your question is part of a much bigger story. Simply giving the records you have to a sibling won't give you an answer. The same question is resonating with every historical oil drilling locations. WesternCanada is trying to find answers as well.

From this articlehttps://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/forgotten-oil-gas-wells-linger-leaking-toxic-chemicals-79142639 it seems that there are some committees that might be able to give you some guidance.

Those papers might be important to the search for forgotten wells.
