I have read about - and now heard from a person who lives there - that there are a lot of bear issues in the part of New Hampshire where I would like to live someday so I can be free.

The guy was telling me that he got special heavy metal lids for his trash cans but the bears got into them anyways.

Has anyone here dealt with bears?

I think I would rather deal with bears than the Board of Health, but never having had that experience maybe I am being naive.

There are black bears in various areas around here. They rarely cause problems for humans, as long as you secure your garbage, or wait 'til garbage day to put it out.

They make bear proof garbage cans and people in Tahoe are required to have them.

I used to own an old homestead that was an inholding in the Shasta Trinity National Forest. It had the only water for miles around, and the property had lots of old fruit trees, berry thickets, and acorns.

It was a wildlife paradise. Especially for bears. Place was infested with bears, and for years they had released human-habituated bears in this "remote" spot, which made human-bear interactions even more fun.

We had to use serious bear protocols when up there. Violations of the guidelines quickly were noted by the bears. I had a friend visit once who left food in his car, and the bears opened it up like a Happy Meal. We were constantly shadowed by Hopeful Bears. In all the years I used that properly, no harm came to humans or bears, but it took some planning and effort.

If you intend to live around bears, I encourage you to do some investigation...

I have had them on my property here and in Michigan, but never had any issues with them, but I have two very barky dogs who apparently also scared a moose away last summer, according to our neighbor.

My parents had them on their property in Virginia, and one did once attack a foal in their barn. That was pretty horrible.

If you live in a village type setting such as I see all over the place in New Hampshire, I very much doubt bears will give you any problem.

One problem has been people who like bears leaving donuts etc out for them to eat. They have attacked some people.

In libertarian areas Fish & Game is the statist enemy and not called so there tend to be more problems than in the Yuppie areas where they are called.

Just raccoons, which apparently are close relatives.

My husband is reading A Libertarian Walked Into a Bear. He loves it.
