View Full Version : I just don't have the energy.....

As I've posted I have more time now due to OT cutbacks at work. I find myself so tired - as if I've hit a wall. There have been more Police and US CBP issues I haven't posted about that I could engage in activism about.....

But right now I just want to sleep, spend time with my cat and in my yard and with SO. I'm getting.sone attitude about it again and I'm like whatever. I'm too tired to be of.much use on activism right now anyway.

Working on not feeling guilty (easier said than done) and putting my health first.

Sometimes you just need a break from "things" and it sounds like you have reached that point. So take a break (guilt free!) and I'm guessing you will know when it's time to start "doing" again.

I think lots of things slow down in summer. There are fewer city meetings where I am. So you are probably not missing that much.

Tell me about it. Trying to run the business, moving, and possibly having to move back, maintain two houses, helping with all the estate stuff, etc. etc. If I make the mistake of sitting down, I tend to fall asleep from exhaustion.

Doesn't help that the purring sound is kind of a white noise while they pile up next to me.

I agree with the consensus. There’s more to life than politics.

I agree with the consensus. There’s more to life than politics.Yes. This may be the first time I've agreed with you, but yes. You are dead here in my book.

There’s never a wrong time to nap with cats if that’s what you’re referring to. Heck, this guy even got a volunteer opportunity doing it!

I tend to think of rest and recuperation as something necessary at times in order to have the energy to pursue extracurriculars. Burnout happens, and the best way to deal with it probably isn't to keep going, but to cut out much of the non-essential in order to rest and recover. Investing in your wellbeing during burnout will probably make you more effective with your community-based activities in the long-run. If you keep going when burned out, there's a chance you'll be sustaining a negative feedback loop, while if you wait until you feel recovered to get back at it you'll be sustaining a positive one. There's no shame in taking a long-term approach to the situation IMO.

And I think it doesn't have to be all-or nothing either. One can take a break from many non-essential responsibilities and keep the more important ones that still seem to provide a positive feedback loop, then slowly work the others in as energy levels start to return, or get rid of some of the more important ones if energy levels continue to drop.

If you get too burned out you are no good to anyone. Everything has a season and you need to take care of yourself.

I recently finished a book, 4000 weeks, that sort of ties in to this. The basic point of the book is that the whole idea of ‘time management’ and being efficient about getting stuff done and all the ‘hacks’ that time management books suggest are doomed to failure because 4000 weeks (the average lifespan of a human in developed society) just isn’t much time when one thinks about the big picture. At the end of the day when you reach the end of your 4000ish weeks will you be glad that you spent so much time on whatever you spent it on? And frankly, with 8 billion humans roaming the planet will the efforts you spent on whatever you spent those weeks on actually matter? Yes there are a few people who have changed the course of history. And yes, sometimes if enough little people come together to make big changes. But overall a lot of what we stress about ‘having to get done’ just doesn’t matter in the big picture. As such choose wisely the activities that you spend your time on. And don’t worry about everything else. There’s nothing wrong with spending time loving your cat, loving your SO, loving your yard. After all, is not all of the ‘important’ things you do like activism and working hard, done with a goal of having a better life which is presumably loving your cat, loving your SO, etc?
