Looks like she will defy China’s frantic saber rattling and Biden’s fretting to be the first House Speaker since Gingrich to go there. I say good for her. Too many Americans have caved to Chinese pressure in recent decades.

Does appeasing tyrants make the world more or less stable?

It's always a hard thing to know...bullies with nukes? I don't know what is the best thing to do. Kind of wish we could still do covert assassinations.....

I see Thomas Friedman, who I respect, is calling Pelosi's trip "reckless and irresponsible" and that nothing good could come of it.

I gotta say I'm with LDAHL on this one. What did appeasement of Putin do for the Crimea, and now Ukraine, and long-term stability of Europe? Bullies do not respect those they perceive as "weak". Either we are willing to be a trusted ally, or we are not. Enough dithering already.

He’s always had a strange love/hate view of China. I think he’s the one who famously wished he could be “China for a day” so he could impose the policies he favored for the US; A sort of Davos globalism, where an elite technocratic class would steer us into the future.

Well apparently she landed and there's to this moment been any Chinese retaliation. Let's hope it stays that way! Rob

I get why China hates Taiwan. They are proof that it’s not necessary to have an authoritarian government to succeed. As such I tend to side with ldahl as well. Good for pelosi for standing up to the bully. What it will accomplish I dont know. I’ll leave that to other smarter people.
