View Full Version : The Queen is dead. God save the King

Queen Elizabeth became queen a month before I was born. She has been a constant presence in the background of my life. It feels strange to know that she no longer is part of that background.

I know many people feel this monarchy is irrelevant, but Queen Elizabeth was a remarkable monarch--in terms of the length of her reign and her ability to have, lose and regain the hearts of her people with her consistent service and sense of duty.

I’m very sad. I’ve always been something of an Anglophile. She certainly was steadfast for so long and a constant for some many people.

Oh my. I knew she was going downhill. Did her heart give out?

We don’t know what happened yet.

One minute it was "her doctors are concerned," the next "Queen Elizabeth is dead."
She served long and well.

And didn’t she carry out activities day before yesterday? Too much for her I guess. The new Prime Minister is the last to be anointed by this Queen.

I think she was going downhill since she got covid. She lived a long life though.

15 Prime Ministers. The first was Churchill. That really gives perspective of her long reign.

I think Prince Philip's passing took the wind out of her sails.

And maybe being confined so long due to Covid. She was very active before.

The rainbow was lovely, what an amazing life, and may she rest in heavenly peace.

I'm embarrassed to say that my first thought upon hearing the news was the theme song to Charles In Charge.

"Charles in charge
Of our days and our nights
Charles in charge
Of our wrongs and our rights"

Seems appropriate.

Yes it does. It’s mind boggling to imagine that she had been queen when a man born in 1874, 148 years ago, was prime minister and now the current prime minister was born in 1974. .

When I read that there was 101 years between Churchill's birth year and Liz Trusses, I thought the BBC had made a typo. That is really crazy.

My late neighbor, that lived in three centuries, had a plate from when she was inaugurated. (she or some family/friend was in the UK when it happened)
Since I am on for the foreseeable future, and my mom was headed to the grocery store, she picked up a few items I haven't been able to. She dropped them off and whatever she was listening to, said the queen had been recently diagnosed with cancer of some kind.

Part of me is thinking of a discussion back in high school about her. Part of me is wondering how many countries will be celebrating, as I understand that she had the most countries declared independence during her reign.
Then another part of me has this song going through my head:

I think I'm in the minority here, being in the "who really even cares" camp. I mean, I wasn't wishing her dead or anything, but I honestly just never even thought about her. I would probably feel differently if I lived in the UK, but she was just some monarch of another country, so doubly irrelevant to me.
The song going through my head has been "God Save the Queen" by the Sex Pistols, but I won't post a link not wishing to be disrespectful to those here who admired her.

As with anyone passing, I find it sad. Having pretty much grown up with her being part of world events, a part of me will miss her presence.

I'm right along with you. I was sad that she passed but geez, she was 96! Figured it could have been any day to hear about her going. I think losing Philip didn't help. You're married to someone for over 7 decades and then suddenly they are no longer around.

It wasn't old age. She died because you all didn't wear your masks often enough. No one dies of old age anymore.

The Liberations put out a tweet that all the grief about her passing shows how many people like having someone rule over them.

I've been watching the Queen's funeral since 6:30am. I know there aren't that many people here that are interested (where's razz when I need her!). This is so very compelling to me, not just the sheer pageantry, but the idea that it is all for a Queen who has done her job extremely well--however important or unimportant you think that job is. I think about the few British Queens who have ruled (only 6 female sovereigns in British history) and three have them have been exemplary in terms of their view of service and duty: Elizabeth I, Victoria, and Elizabeth II, and they have all done their country extremely proud.

I'm watching the funeral because I am a sucker for pageantry and marking the passages of time. Those Beethoven marches are getting pretty old to my ears though. I was amazed that the leading horses in London were walking to the beat- that must have taken a lot of training.

I think DH is equally overwhelmed. Here he is raising the lion rampart flag--in the rain--in honor of QEII (and I'm sure his British roots). Bruno, my DD's dog, attending.

The British definitely know how to do pageantry. My first bf was a very skilled church organist. Of all the churches he served when I knew him his favorites were two episcopal churches that did high mass because he loved that aspect of things. His dream job would have been to serve at a Church of England cathedral.

I’m sorry he’s not still alive. He would’ve been watching this funeral absolutely rapt and would have been able to talk for hours about what they did and why and the symbolism of every action. And because I loved him I would’ve listened attentively and likely learned more than a few things about episcopal liturgy.

Her life was remarkable. Think of all the world leaders and famous folk she met. It's amazing. She met all the US presidents during her reign except LBJ. (Wonder if civil unrest & Vietnam precluded any visit) Hard to imagine LBJ visiting with the Queen. But I bet she would have enjoyed Ladybird.

I think her absence will be unsettling for Brits especially at Christmas. The first in 70 years without a message from her. She's been the only queen for the majority for their entire lives. (Of course I do realize many are not monarchy fans.)

According to the dramatized version of her life on The Crown , her sister visited LBJ and Lady Bird Johnson in Texas and was quite a hit with them.

I went to a garden club meeting today and at least two people said they had been up very early watching the actual funeral. I did not watch it but I watched the processions leading up to it, but I will watch later video of the funeral and interment.

It’s good that she died in Scotland because I don’t think her body would’ve been taken to Scotland otherwise, right? I’ve walked the royal mile a few times between Holyrood and Saint Giles, so I know that area well.

One thing to come out of this is that I haven’t seen the Prince of Wales’ little son, George, in a while. Good Lord, Charles Spencer must wet his pants with joy every time he sees that kid because he looks exactly like the Spencer side of the family.

.

Maybe I misunderstand your comment, IL, but she was actually buried at St. George Chapel at Windsor Castle in England, not Scotland. Her body was taken from Scotland and brought to England after she died. There were two funeral services--one at Westminister and another short one at St. George Chapel, during which the casket was slowly lowered into the burial vault. Very moving.

But after she died, they had a long procession from Balmoral to Edinburgh. She spent the night at Holyrood Palace. And the next day she went to Saint Giles to lie in state for a day. The family procession happened in Scotland.
And then later it happened in London of course.

I watched more of the Scotland footage than anything else so far.

If she had died in London, I doubt the Scottish pageantry would have happened.

This event had my cousin and I talking and he told me that there was a period of almost 2 centuries when a reigning UK monarch did not step foot into Scotland. For god’s sake that’s crazy. George the IV was the one to go to Scotland in 1822, breaking the tradition on monarchs avoiding the place since Charles II was crowned there in 1651.

I still find that hard to believe. I’ve poked around the Internet a little bit but can’t find anything to dispute it.

If I knew where my big British flag was I would’ve flown it but it’s piled up somewhere in boxes since our move.

Got it... I didn't watch TV after her death because I was at a reunion of some old college friends for a few days.

Interesting about the English monarchs never going to Scotland between 1651-1822. I think the relationship between the two countries has always been a bit tenuous, so maybe that had something to do with it.

And then the taxpayers get to spend another $billion on the .coronation of Charles III. The pagentry comes with a cost.

I love that we get to enjoy it all but we don’t have to pay a dime towards it.
