Tech : cell phones, sms messages

Cracked the screen on my first cell, but had picked up another when I found a deal. Just found out that there is a program to download SMS messages, but I haven't been able to find an answer yet.
Will it delete the messages on the new phone I already have, or will they add into the downloaded messages?

Depending on the version of phone/software, there is an easy way to transfer everything to new phone if it’s an iPhone.

I have an iPhone and an Android phone, both had utilities to transfer data, apps, messages, etc., upon initial setup.
Just a few minutes of following instructions and bada bing, you're done.
