3K year old canoe found in WI lake

My WI diving instructor found a 1200 yo dugout canoe last summer in Lake Mendota (Madison). This year, she found another one! This time, it’s 3000 yo! :0! She was in a training dive with a student when they found it, about 1000ft from where last year’s canoe was found.

The local native tribes were involved with the first and with this one. This article has a neat interview with instructor Tami.

We jokingly call her the canoe lady or canoe whisperer now. The first find went international and I’m sure this one will make lots of canews too! Not sure who in Madison came up with the canews pun! :D

Okay---There is no question in my littlebittymind what should be done with that archaeological find,. Instead of placing it on display in a museum, for all to see, the Gummmint must create a special task force to use the latest science to track down the descendants of the original owners of that canoe, and return it to them. That way, they can place it on display in a Casino or whatever, as a drawing card. Yup.I know you kids think that is an impractical scheme, but it goes along with all the other impractical schemes we see to achieve parity & justice, these days. Hope that helps you some. Tami just posted on FB that she and the state archaeologist, her boss, were just interviewed by NPR and the WSJ.

Here’s the NPR piece. Apparently once there’s ice on Mendota this winter, they’re going to use ground penetrating radar to look for more canoes.

Neither the Ho-Chunk or the Chippewa have the funds to restore the canoe. Other people have been asking on FB why doesn’t it just get returned to one of the tribes. It takes 2-3 years for restoration and it ain’t cheap.

Both members of the Ho-Chunk and Chippewa bands were out yesterday helping to clean the canoe off.
