I’ve heard about birds crashing into glass skyscrapers and being injured or killed. But I’ve not seen it happen up close and personal. We don’t live in a skyscraper by a long short but wow! A bird just flew full speed ahead into the side of our house while I was sitting in the backyard reading. It landed on our patio table in a very unceremonious fashion and sat there panting and looking generally pretty awful. But after about 15 minutes it recombobulated its wings, looked around for a minute and then flew off. I assume he or she must have a terrible headache right now but I guess they will be ok. I guess I will chalk this up to ‘things that happen to people who live at the urban/rural interface’.

This used to happen at Chez Decay frequently. I don't think there was ever a fatality.

Did it fly into a window, JP?

Yes, it flew into the window of my office on the second floor. I assume it saw the reflection of the hill behind the house.

get some decals for your window. If there's a backyard bird store near you, they probably have these ones like we have, holographic that seem to deter them from a further distance.

Or just make something to tape up so the reflections are broken up.

That’s a good idea. I will have to look for those.

Talking to one of the women I work with her parents’ house backs on to a golf course and has a long (15 footish) sliding door and they’ve been struggling with bird crashes repeatedly. They also have a problem of ducks going swimming in their pool but I suppose that’s not such a problem for the ducks, just for the humans since the ducks deficate during their swims…

Yes, I was going to suggests the decals, or if it's a window where you can have a screen, it will not look like something that can be flown through. I assume a curtain, shade or drape would also be effective.

Birds fly into our sliding glass door all the time. Like with you, they sit there for a while and then fly off.

It just happened here as well. We keep a couple of bird feeders on the back deck year round and they're pretty popular with the local birds. This morning a bird (I think it's a Northern Flicker) crashed into a window and bounced across the deck. I'm keeping an eye on it to see if it recovers, it's currently moving it's head around and keeping an eye on me as well.

UPDATE: After posting this I went back out to check and was able to watch him fly away. I guess all is good.

I think there is a strong possibility it is a Downy or possibly a Hairy Woodpecker.

Could be. We have several varieties hanging around and they're mostly all just woodpeckers to me. :)

Pretty sure that's a Downy Woodpecker, Alan. This is a Northern Flicker>>

I third the Downy Woodpecker ID.
