Seems to have delivered something for everyone!
God Bless America!
I love watching American politics! There’s never a dull moment.
Trump’s kingmaking prowess certainly seems in question, with so many of his picks going down in defeat. His current best frenemy seems to have decisively painted Florida red. The Orange man’s got his best people working on playground insults.
On the Democrat side Beto may have set a record by failing in presidential, senate and gubernatorial bids within the space of a few years. Stacy Abrams can add to her portfolio of grievances, perhaps blaming misogynistic alien space lizards. What a magnificent cash bonfire.
The red wave having seen to have been more of a trickle, calling the poll-takers’ art into question. Makes me glad I hung up on them all those times.
With Johnson eking out a victory over Barnes in Wisconsin, control of the Senate is now up to the results in Nevada, Arizona and Georgia. We may be prolonging the drama until December 6.
The House is still up in the air, no doubt with dramatic recounts and lawsuits to look forward to.
As close as things are, we can expect everyone to double down on their prior positions. No matter who comes out on top, I suspect democracy’s doomsday will now be rescheduled for 2024.
Nice summary, LDAHL.
I'm glad there wasn't much drama around all of this (so far). I agree with IL, that no one can be particularly disappointed. Is that what unity is?
Massachusetts got even more super blue. For moderates like myself Vermont is now looking good in comparison, and of course New Hampshire, which kept moderate Democrats over far right Trumpian Republicans.

Come on up, Jeppy! I am happy for the most part with the political climate. Rural Vermonters and Bobos in Paradise get along pretty well and respectfully.
A friend who we worked with campaigning for Bernie back in Michigan overturned a Michigan rep seat from a two term Republican! So happy for her, as she starts her new role as a Michigan State Representative in Lansing!

If only there were more housing inventory. It's still very difficult. Went to an open house this past weekend and by the time I got there 20 minutes after it started they had an offer already.

I had no doubt Florida would become even more Republican. I’m very glad Trump has lost influence and many election deniers were shunned. The red Tsunami did not occur and I believe many Republicans are sick of Trump.
going forward I hope both parties get it together. Disagree with healthcare, immigration, “entitlements”? Work on passing legislation in line with our constitution.
I hope in 2024 we have good strong Democrat and Republican candidates who want to work on actual problems and move us forward.

And that’s the situation almost everywhere in the country. The world keeps turning the day after the election. The beauty of democracy, despite what the true believers will tell you, is that there are no permanent victories.
The people trapped in a jihadi mindset may call you a turncoat if you vote for a single candidate of the infidel party, but the quieter real world carries on in a frustratingly apocalypse-free manner.

Unfortunately, my (former) big city political environment got even crazier and less effective. The only political race I really cared about, Board of Alderman President, did not go my way. I still own a condo there so I care about what happens.
I am cheered by the results of abortion amendments across the country, though. So yeah, something for everyone.

I think it is interesting how the media hones in on all these scary political topics and blows them up as if that's all we care about. To me it has become just plain boring. Let's get on with life...

Since we no longer get our news in print or broadcast format, we are each of us our own news programmer. This puts a premium on clickbait headlines.

You are referring to me and I know you are the jihadi. You voted for a guy that sent fake electors, is a trump toady, wants to jack around with medicare/social security, tells women if they don’t like his stance on abortion they can leave the state. Your type, obviously, are the threat to our democracy! You may carry on in an apocalypse free manner for now BUT you are rooting for an autocratic society by the way you vote.
The jihadi mindset clearly belongs to the Right, with their quasi-religious fervor and enthusiasm for civil war. Not to mention calls to murder prominent figures who oppose them, like Nancy Pelosi or Mike Pence.

It's looking as if Arizona will retain it's rep as politically strange. Kari Lake has yet to win and she is already sounding off about fraud. Ick. Just ick. We all deserve so much better. There's also local worry regarding Lake instigating political violence. Never a dull moment in Arizona. Rob

Kinda makes ya scratch your head and go hmmmm when we see how close the Arizona governor’s race is and considering that Lake’s opponent, who is in charge of elections across the state, allowed ballots to go out without Lake’s name on it.
As for Karie Lake the person, TIL she graduated from the University of Iowa, my alma mater. She was an Iowa farm girl. This is excellent.

So now she's threatening the media and ordering McCain voters out of her rallies. A real charmer.

I’m hoping what comes out of this is Trump disappearing from the scene. I don’t believe he will do it, though. He will hang around and be a poor sport, bashing DeSantis and republicans who don’t want him to run or stay in the picture.
it should be resoundingly clear that even with Bidens being blamed for inflation, gas prices and the student loan forgiveness, people went for non election deniers and candidates not endorsed by trump. He probably caused them to lose some seats.
maybe he will be too busy with his all his lawsuits and will fade away.
liz Cheney called it a clear victory for team normal.
Trump has achieved something no other person has in any of our lifetimes. He lost the house for his party in 2018, lost the senate and the presidency in 2020 and then lost them a big wave takeover in 2022. And yet he’s still the leader of the party. (Mitch is probably saying to himself and trusted advisors ‘we should have convicted him at the second impeachment when we had the chance to get rid of the f’ing a’hole’) Unless he drops dead between now and 2024 I expect he will continue to be a thorn in the republican’s side. With his ego he doesn’t care what happens to his party. He will run for president and the primary will be UGLY. and if he loses in it I wouldn’t be surprised to see him run as an independent in the general and be the biggest spoiler possible.

I definitely would have voted for Charlie Baker for governor if he had run for re-election.

My type does not frantically insist every election is Armageddon. My type votes to frustrate the ambitions of the party pushing for an increasingly powerful and intrusive federal government. Or that actively works to eliminate fossil fuels before they have something to replace it with. Or that the constitution is really more a set of suggestions than rules.
Went to my local Republican city meeting last night and they are split between the realists who see they need to move on to someone like DeSantis and the Trump diehards who insist Trump didn't cost the party a red wave, they really did win everywhere it's just that the vote was rigged, it's not Trump's fault Fauci tricked him, nothing is ever Trump's fault.

“Jump in the lake” is a little bit funny. It doesn’t look like Kari Lake will pull it off.
One of the NYT headlines today went, "Every election denier who sought to become the top election official in a critical battleground state lost at the polls". The article is about secretaries of state. I think 12 or 13 deniers were in the running. That's slightly satisfying.

Our piece of work, a Mr. Mark Finchem, an election denier extreme AND extremely proud January 6th participant thankfully lost and by quite a bit. Also Mark Kelly won (!!!!!) now if Lake would grow up and concede and go write a book/become a GOP talking head, maybe Arizona can go back to what passes for normal here. Rob

Forgot to add - Mark Finchem was an Arizona example of a GOP election denier candidate running for Secretary of State. Rob

And it gets better in Arizona. 85K ballots were released yesterday with Hobbs getting the majority of votes and growing/retaining her lead over Kari Lake. Fingers crossed - Lake is bad, bad, bad news for Arizona and the US as a whole. Rob

He was featured on 60 minutes as something of a poster boy for election deniers. He gave me the heebie jeebies.
I get the impression from the news that the Trump loyalists took a trouncing and ambitious Republican wolves are nipping at their flanks.
With a few notable exceptions, I'm pleased with the outcome so far. The independent Secretary of State candidate I voted for, Julie Anderson (not an election denier), lost by about three points. My first non-Democrat choice in a long, long time.
It’s strange.
Trump failed to boost his choices, which could be good for Republicans in the long term if they can now improve their candidate selection.
Biden’s poor approval numbers didn’t drag down Democrats to the extent expected, which could hurt them in the long run if they make him their standard-bearer in 2024.

President Biden's approval levels are nearly identical to those of his predecessors.

In a De Santa’s vs Biden, De Desantis will smoke him.
however, it is extremely dangerous for the GOP to put all their faith and hope in one candidate. They need to chug along, finding decent human beings as candidates, get them into lower offices, see them govern well, and elevate them.
President Biden's approval levels are nearly identical to those of his predecessors.
https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/biden-approval-rating/
FiveThirtyEight has a feature that lets you compare presidents since 1945. If you set for "net approval". For this point in his tenure, he has the lowest number except for Harry Truman.
Desantis is kind of the worst of both worlds. He’s playing hard to the party’s maga base but the maga base won’t be happy if he knocks trump off his altar. He also simply doesn’t have as much charisma. And in the mud slinging match of seeing who can be the meanest, most vindictive asshole that is going to be the Republican primary it’s simply not possible that he can out trump trump. Not to mention that he won’t be the only person competing against trump. And just like in 2016 all the non-trumps will dilute each other and trump will get 35-40% of the vote. Baring death or imprisonment I expect trump will be the nominee.

Wonderful news from Arizona, folks! AP just called the race for Katie Hobbs! Kari Lake's down home redneck support in Pinal County (an Arizona embarrassment between Phoenix and Tucson) was not enough for her to pull off a win. Now we have a chance - thin though it may be - for police reform. Rob

And something else - Phoenix and Tucson BOTH had more Dem than GOP votes and Nogales was extremely dark blue as usual. Way to go, Arizona! Rob

Oh I think DeSantis has a whole lot more going on for the populace. He is careful, he educates himself on issues, and he is analytical. He made many good decisions for Florida and maybe he just lucked out in some cases, who knows, but his constituents like him.
I suppose it will all depend on how he does campaigning. Or maybe he’ll just sit this one out and let DJ T self destruct.

Of course there were no election police where I live because it is basically a red county full of white voters.
I agree he is smart and crafty but like his new enemy Donald likes to see how far he can push the law. He is mean and can lean towards being dictatorial, as in my way or the highway, and I can't wait to see what happens when Trump makes his announcement. I believe it is going to sow so much discord in the Republican party I'm making a big batch of popcorn and I'm going to sit back and enjoy the show. I'll be sending my thoughts and prayers as they fight it out.
