View Full Version : Practical Nuclear Fusion
I hear an announcement is being made today that Lawrence Livermore Labs has produced a fusion reaction with a net positive energy yield. If that is so, and if we can overcome the superstitious dread of the word “nuclear”, it could be a very big deal.

I am all in favor of it.
The Libertarians in New Hampshire see this as the solution to their energy independence if/when they are able to set up their own country.
I was working on high energy plasma physics back in the '80s, when an accident at our lab set back our program by an easy 3-4 years, and I decided I didn't want to sit on my hands for 4 years for the equipment to be replaced to finish a PhD, so I switched to a different field. (Also, taking a look at post-doc physics salaries may have had additional influence on my thinking...)
Practical fusion always seems to be "just a decade away", but I'd truly hoped operational power production would be happening by now.

Link to the story? I remember there was some big fusion lab being developed, but don't remember where.
I also seem to remember news about Hydrogen 3 being found on the moon. (which could have some benefit)
Edit, helium 3.
