View Full Version : White and cold Christmas
Looks like it’s going to be a white and cold Christmas for a good part of the US east of the Mississippi.
The storm looks like it’s going to mostly hit on Thursday and Friday for snow. I’m keeping an eye on it as I’m supposed to drive back from FL on Sat and Sunday.

It is very cold here but we got minimal snow, not even an inch.

Lot of wind?
I’m overnighting in Nashville tomorrow. The Waze app shows a few spots with icy road south of Nashville, but that’s all currently. I’m going to Nashville via the FL panhandle and AL. Skips the horrid congestion in Atlanta, even though all the map apps show through Atlanta as the faster route. Home from Nashville on Sunday will be I-24 to I-57 and then 57 all the way up IL. State of IL is generally good about clearing roads. IN doesn’t have a good reputation from everyone I talk to.

Right now, we’re eight below with a thirty-three below wind chill. Only a few inches of snow, but some deadly drifting out there. I have to drag the dog outside to conduct his business. He’s a sensible beast.
Four or five inches of snow. The wind has finally settled down and it just crawled above zero for the first time in about 36 hours. My firewood stack took a big hit. They are predicting a relative heat wave starting tomorrow. I'm driving out of town tomorrow and expect the roads will be clear by then.

Got up this morning around 7am. The electricity kept going on and off every 20 minutes…. now has been on continuously for 3 hours. The wind is still wicked though. 32 degrees with 22 mph winds in southern Texas.

Okay---I checked, and it was 13 degrees F colder here, than at the city formerly known as Barrow, Alaska. But yeah---everything is canceled, except mee feeding everybody & putting the battery charger on my 15 year old economy car. Good thing I cut some firewood to use with the reused catt litter & plastic bottles.
. Hope it lasts through the weekend. Yup.

We're seasonably warm (40s) and we seem to be in a nice little valley, evading some of the really bad wind gusts compared to the more mountainous parts, but still, we have 20mph winds from the south. It's been a weird day--rain, sleet, sun, wind in quick succession. Cable cut out in the middle of an interview, but my cell was still OK so all was not lost

I had to put on shoes coat and hat to entice my dog outside last night. But I honestly it was the snow that freaked him out more than anything because he is easily scared of stupid things.

I went through Nashville a couple months ago around 10 AM on a weekday and still the traffic wasn’t minimal.
I forget that St. Louis has hardly any traffic, we get spoiled.

Our highs have been around 50 which is great. Ex husband #2 and his wife are here for a week so I have cooked for them a few times including tomorrow because my Dil is working so much and my son can’t with both his arms barely functioning. The ex took us all out to a fancy restaurant that was delicious and then we went to a casino show that was really good. They live in Wichita and missed out on snow and record cold.

Still better than Atlanta.

Today I went for a walk in the fields, like I usually do when I have the free time, something I don't usually have, I wake up at 6:00 and arrive home near midnight every single day. The temperature was around 15ºc, it wasn't cold. There was a man in an old stone house, a very beautiful stone house hidden by the trees, a tiny house, real tiny, he was getting the fire going inside, I could see the smoke coming out, I assume he was going to spend the Christmas there, alone, something I think I wouldn't mind. The landscape is changing, and I would like to have more time to see it change, that's the only thing I believe I'll regret in life, to miss what matters, and this matters to me very deeply.

Thank you, I like it very much as well. I find that so many people that have lived here all their life haven't seen it, sometimes I'm under a tree and I see locals go by, looking at the ground, it tells me something, beauty is everywhere, for those who can see, those who can't, it doesn't matter where they live.
Took these in the same day I took the first one.

Just got to my hotel a bit south of Nashville. The entire state of TN had rolling blackouts today for about 30 min at a time. Called hotel on my way north after I had seen the blackout info elsewhere and asked them to put me on their lowest floor with rooms as I can’t manage stairs easily with my knees. Got a room on the 2nd floor. Found out when I checked in that blackouts won’t start again until the morning, if they do them again.
Roads were clear in FL, AL, and TN. Very cold, but a bright sunny day.
Here, within the last 5 days:
- A Big snow event that only happens every 10-15 years
- A Nor’Easter of epic proportions
- A deep freeze, single-digit temperatures, wind chill < -15F or worse
- A 10 hour power outage overnight when it was 15 degrees out with high winds
- An ice storm that coated every surface with solid ice
- A 6 hour power outage on Christmas Eve
- Half of all ferries cancelled yesterday to/from the island, leaving people stranded all over the place.
- Almost *all* ferries cancelled to and from the island on Christmas Eve. More stranding

Ugh. Those ice storms are the absolute worst. We had another 24 hours without power that ended late yesterday. Out of the last 7 days, only 2 days had power. Between medical issues and the power, we don't even have a tree up. I feel for all those people stranded on your island on Christmas Day.

Jeez… so sorry for you guys that were without power! Hopefully hasn’t exasperated the medical issues! Here’s hoping you continue to stay warm.
You too, frugal, and Merry Christmas!

John: Those are some beautiful pictures. We have some beautiful woods and walking trails here that many locals have never seen.
Bae: That sounds pretty awful; hope you and Elvis are managing OK.
We're doing fine here. Very cold, but nothing unheard-of for New England in the winter.

Last night we found ourselves suddenly without water in our house. That was worrisome, was it something at the edge of our house or was it the city’s water supply? A couple hours later it came back on so it had been a problem with the city.
catherine, I do wonder about the stresses on your septic system with all of those people in your house, and in freezing weather.

Okay---septic & cold weather. No prollem, since everything is underground, below frost levels. Normal ones, anyway. But, leaving faucets dripping to prevent supply lines from freezing does add more water to the septic system. But, most systems are over-engineered in their capacity, anyway. Thank your bureaucratts for that. Yup.

A suburb of Chicago had a water main break due to the cold.
I’m partway through IL on my way home with about 4 hours to go. Roads for my second day of the drive home have been dry. Cold and sunny. Supposed to get a bit of snow at home tonight.
Something I noticed in my drive home - about half of the gas stations I’ve stopped at have at least half of their gas pumps OUT. I’ve been stopping a lot due to the coke - I’m not letting my tank get below 3/4.
Many of the small community water systems on my island are now either very low pressure, or out of water entirely.
The thaw yesterday/this morning allowed many broken pipes in homes to flow freely, draining the system. Many of the homes were unoccupied, so there’s probably a lot of interior damage going on. What a mess!

Okay----Here's a Merry Holidays from your idol, Carts. He's posing as if he's slicing up portions of his dinner to serve it, but you just know he'd have servants to do that, for him and his guests. Well, wouldn't he? Sides that, the
(late)love of his life, Linda, was a non-Xtian. So she'd disapprove. Hope that helps you some. Thankk mee.5028
Home. Roads were clear and weather good both days on the way home.
Glad you are safely home, Tradd. I am always nervous driving Christmas Day because nothing open.

The big truck stops are always open and they actually have a decent amount of food choices. Love’s Travel Stops are newer and they are very nice and clean. Then there are always gas stations open off the interstate. In the south, there are Waffle House locations always open, but I didn’t stop at one of those.

On one of these threads there were post about heat pumps.
Today we got our heat exchanger/heat pump system installed for our sunroom. I’m curious to see how well it will keep up in a room full of windows in the summertime. I don’t expect it to be perfect, I imagine we will use our sunroom mostly during cooler weather Which in Missouri is November through March.
We had a fortunate warm up after the bitter cold and wind from the bomb cyclone and before our 10 inches of wet snow today from the atmospheric river. The meteorologists must have fun making up weather descriptions. I splurged on an Ego cordless eclectic snow blower last year and was able to do my walks and driveway and the neighbor's walks before running out of charge.
