View Full Version : Stupid people

I am just totally done with stupid people, both IRL and online. I’m calling them out it. I don’t care if people get offended or upset.

Uneducated, ignorant, rural people are a large part of it. Religious zealots that breed like rabbits, spread all sorts of conspiracy theory crap. You don’t have to have formal education to be educated. Go pick up a book. But the mentality, OMG. And it’s both sides of the political spectrum.

My default of b*tch is coming out full force. I’m done being nice. Yes, I’ve become a snob. And I don’t really care. Trash is trash. I hate everyone equally.

I’ve had to stop going several places online I was active because the ignorance is astounding.

The worse is willful ignorance, anti-intellectualism as a badge of honor in certain circles. Ugh.

When intellectualism is closely associated with ridiculous fringe-left ideology only accepted as normal on University campuses, I am somewhat sympathetic to the anti-intellectuals.

Okay----I'm glad to see that you kids are finally beginning to see what I've known all along. That's why it's hard to relate to summa these people, around here. Or anywhere. See? But yeah---for an example, I sat-n-watched another video from the 6th floor museum, where they interviewed the guy who gave Oswald a ride to work on that dreadful deadly day in Dealy in downtown Dallas. Well, the guys' narrative style is typical of what you find in certain individuals in the mid-south, and after all of these years, he has obviously caught on to the fact that you've got have something conspiratorial to believe in, especially if you are in anyway associated with the real event of that day. It is your stock-in-trade. They added that his book was available in the bookstore, downstairs. Autographed, of course. But yeah---$4000 stupid bull tickkicks. That affirms what the OP asserts. Yup. Hope that helps you some.

Stopping going to several places online seems like it would be a good stress reducer for you. There are some places online to collect accurate information, but it's wise to filter out the riff-raff and ignore them rather than get angry. It's sort of like Judge Judy. You really don't have to watch it.

Perfect example of stupid:

I was just getting gas at lunch. Some young gal starts nattering at me in Spanish. I’m a pale Northern European, so where she got the idea I spoke Spanish, I have no clue. I told her in English that I don’t speak Spanish. She then asks me in perfect English where some business was located. All this whole she’s holding a smartphone. I told her Google Maps is her friend and left.

I just got kicked off a Facebook group dedicated to color in interior design. The thread was from a woke mom who made a beautiful nursery for her son but she felt compelled to lecture to us all about colors and gender. I was not the first nor the second to respond to the lecture, but when it went on and on I said “ this is irritating. Let us discuss this beautiful rug,”

No more Facebook color maximalist interactions for me! Cancelled!

So yeah, stupid moderating. What not just zap the thread.

I would have found this mildly puzzling--like was she sizing me up for some nefarious reason--but not anger-inducing.

So, I assume that if you decorated your baby boys' room with football posters, and football paraphernalia, and dressed the kid in baby football jerseys, then he would develop a foo'baw identity, and make that his vocation or avocation? Maybe it would've helped to just axed a harmless quession, than to zing the woke mom in the presence of other wok-eees. But yeah---they are ninnies, no doubt.

A read of the book "Four Thousand Weeks" might cause a person to lose patience when when encountering other people who are bent on dishonest discourse or buffoonery.

Gentle instruction of people who are simply ignorant is usually worth 1-2 tries, but not much more.

Some people have trouble with code-switching. Or are simply oblivious.

Spanish is the second-most-common language in the USA, I'd think it would be wise to speak/understand at least a little of it, and be proficient in negotiating the language used in communication, and not to take offense.

"What do you call someone who only speaks one language?" "An American!"

Go sit in the Tube for a couple of hours, and you'll be amazed how many varieties of "English" there are in the UK.

I agree about the level of stupid out there but what are ya gonna do? I didn't deal with it much back in Austin but here it is rampant and I'm not sure why.

"Bonhoeffer’s argument is that the more someone becomes part of the establishment, the less an individual they become. A charismatic, exciting outsider, bursting with intelligence and sensible policies, becomes imbecilic the moment he takes office."

The "establishment." There's that word again.

"We note further that people who have isolated themselves from others or who live in solitude manifest this defect less frequently than individuals or groups of people inclined or condemned to sociability. And so it would seem that stupidity is perhaps less a psychological than a sociological problem." This explains much.

There are many branches on the great tree of stupidity. One of the most egregious is the unfounded assumption of superiority so often seen in in our political and cultural discussions.

I try to have patience and compassion for those who seem to truly be of low intelligence. Life is hard, and it must be all the harder if one doesn't have a decent set of tools.

Rogar: I like that quotation.

Tradd: I would think that Spanish is that woman's first language, and so it is probably her default. She probably did not consciously decide "I will speak Spanish to that pale woman."

Okay---This is not just a stupid question, but a way to see how intelligent you kids are.Yup. But yeah: Trty and answer just one simple quession: Once you've uploaded or downloaded or whatever the photios oln an SD card to a 'puter, and you switch 'puters, how do you use the same card to load(up, dfown, sideways)the old pics to the new ;'puter? Or will the new 'puter just let you load the old photos off the card? Ha. Just testing your knowledge.

Tradd: I wonder if her conversation on the phone was in Spanish and she just naturally continued her questions to you in that language, instead of consciously switching to English.

I do agree with avoiding not only the stupid, but the nasty as well. I don't have room or want to make room in my life for hate, nastiness, etc. It is a choice and I choose to avoid it the best I can when I can.

Jane you should get a cat. Cats are excellent!

funny that I do not want to live out in the country, I like having neighbors around me. But I don’t really need to talk to them in depth, or for any length of time.

remember back in Covid days things shut down second week of March and I didn’t need to talk to anyone else besides DH until mid June. That was three months. But by then I needed to speak to someone else like in person.

so for extroverts, I can see how painful that whole Covid experience was because they probably had this feeling after a couple of days. But for me, it was three months.

I am in many groups and I have to say that I get annoyed when talking about something that the group is devoted to, that somebody asks what it is or to send them a link. I so want to say "Google is your friend" because honestly, it IS my best friend to look things up. Maybe it is people just wanting to interact or just plain laziness. In the time you asked me the question you could have googled it and got far more than I'm going to give you. I always try to find the answer before asking.

So true, good for you! I am a librarian trained in digital search strategies from days of yore and all that. And I’m tellin’ ya, just Google. Put in random words you think of.

People are SO intimidated by Google and they say “what should I type in?” Jesus, just type in SOMETHING. It is not rocket science (and never was, although Boolean was a thing back in the day.) The Google Machine is so smart!

My last cat--Dexter, an apple head Siamese who showed up on my property unbidden--died several years ago, so all my feline interactions are virtual now. See the "aresponsiblity" thread.

A friend and I had a debate about stupid verses ignorant. I told him I long ago learned you could educate ignorance, but you can't fix stupid.

I’ve been saying that for years.

Someone told me yesterday that all the fraud/identity theft required her going through her PAPER bank statement with a fine tooth comb. Said she’s caught stuff that way. This person has a computer and smart phone. I suggested she set up alerts on all her bank accounts/credit card so she got an email for every transaction. You catch fraud very quickly that way. Nope, she insisted it had to be a paper statement. I gave up. She was not happy when I told her she was an idiot and deserved to lose every penny possible due to being so ignorant.

I would not set up a bank transaction alert for each transaction because I do not want more digital noise, unless I was undergoing a period of identity theft. I DO appreciate the very occasional email alerts from my Credit.card company asking “Did you really do this?” And I marvel at how “smart” they are.

i understand working from a paper statement if I am actually doing work using that data. For just scanning data, digital is good enough for me.

We are wrestling in our iris society with old people who are paper based and who INSIST our annual club roster and events calendar be printed. I have no problem with a printed format of course. Who does? My problem is that the format they insist on having requires finding someone to do it, convert data, format it, take it to a printer. If someone would do that in a timely way, no problem! But it takes MONTHS to get our annual events calendar out to members, and in April we are learning about all of the May events, far too late for those of us who schedule our time.

In recent years I started typing up the events calendar myself and sending it out digitally in January so we all can know dates of events.

I keep the membership roster in spreadsheet form and I showed them how I could print it quickly in that format. Simple, one page. Done! But Nope! They gotta have text formatted in a traditional way. Sigh,

The problem with that woman insisting on only checking a PAPER statement is that she kept getting hit by scammers. If she used the alerts or looked at bank account online, she would have caught stuff MUCH sooner and would have been able to cancel the old card number and get a new one. She was in a constant vicious cycle and just didn’t understand that her insistence on a paper statement caused her much more trouble.
