View Full Version : insane pricing on Etsy
Has anyone else noticed insane pricing on Etsy lately? I wanted to buy a couple of wooden flatware boxes for my silver and they have beat up old flatware boxes that would need refinishing for sixty dollars, and huge shipping prices. I ended up buying a couple on Ebay but they were still way overpriced. But not like Etsy. This guy is charging seven hundred dollars for one he built himself--admittedly, it's cool!

I buy a fair number of things on .Etsy and I suppose there are items far over valued there, but I don’t see many.

That's good to hear. It seems these flatware boxes are in big demand for repurposing for other things, like jewelry boxes.
I am finding that thrift stores are way too expensive now too. Nevertheless, they are full of pickers looking for goodies to up-sell online - Etsy for one no doubt.

You know, now that you mention it, I have a vague memory of looking for silverware boxes on eBay, you know, the standard vintage ones lined with felt, and they were stupidly expensive. I don’t think I’m imagining it. I think I really did look for some but I don’t know why since I don’t need them. Maybe I needed an extra because my silverware was overflowing but now I have it in kitchen drawers.

There are some that are reasonably price on eBay but the shipping, of course is awful because they’re heavy, the good ones are. I suppose that something you look out for an estate sale. These days the box might be worth more than the silver plate in it.

Well demand does cause price increases as supplies of the item, or the time for the makers to make it, goes down.
Well, I made some offers on Ebay and now I have bought two of these:

I figure I can stack them.
I am working on moving some of my mom's silver to my niece, but I want to get the rest of mine polished and in nice boxes.
This is part of wanting to know what I have and take care of it and move along the stuff I don't want to have to care for--the silver is beautiful, and I think the boxes are beautiful too.
Now on to polishing everything, and I think I will buy some tarnish cloth to lay over the pieces--I am thinking the stuff that is in these boxes may have lost its anti-tarnish ability.

Silver is always worth keeping! I am using all of mine.
I’m glad you got some boxes. This discussion will remind me not to get rid of my silver containers on whim.

Oh Tybee......... I wish I had seen this sooner. I had a nice one that I don't use now that I have consolidated my silver with that left from my mom.

Thank you, that's so nice of you!!
I am thinking of all kinds of possible uses for these boxes now. It would be a good art supply box! Anyway, I am good and excited to get the one I ordered and see what I can do to spiff it up with Howards furniture feed.
