I feel your pain.

This is the first year I had to file "single" instead of "head of household", and that hurt. Furthermore, I seem to have earned just a hair too much, and have to repair a fair bit of my ACA "subsidy". Cruelly, the extra earnings came from working for The Govt, bother.

oh yeah, I remember the year we had to pay back all of those ACA subsidies, that was the year DH‘s father died and left us some money. But that was OK because that was new, additional money and we came out ahead. Today we are not coming out “ahead,” our balance sheet is down $50,000.

Did you have someone prepare them for you? That is a lot of money. Will you have to pay a penalty?

I feel lucky that we got healthy refunds - both state and federal.

Our tax guy is a CPA. We do not think any penalties are involved. We had already consulted with him about this surprise taxable event when it happened last fall and there is no way around it.

He told us to contact Medicare to flag them this is a one time income event so they should not increase our fee. Blimey.

We are getting back $68…. thankfully, planned traditional to roth conversion well based on all that was going on.

California always overwithholds for me and the feds under-withhold. I got $2500 back from the California franchise board a few weeks ago and will be sending just over $4,000 to the irs tomorrow.

I owed money because my friend left me an inheritance even though I had 10% withheld but that’s fine. I am very grateful for my windfall.

We had a brutal hit on health care expenses in 2022, so itemizing made a lot of sense. The big refunds were a sort of consolation prize. In 2023 I qualify for Medicare and the age 65 exemption, so things should more normal.

I was 3 months on unemployment after the factory I worked for went bankrupt.
I decided to pick and choose the next job, rejected some positions, worked out okay.
Only made around €10.000 last year, paid around €1.000 in IRS/Social Security.
Will receive around those €1.000 back because of those 3 months unemployment.
