View Full Version : Summer 2023 Challenge
It's a new season and my plans are:
1. See who emerges from the primary to oppose the mayoral incumbent and most likely help that person, assuming they want my help.
2. Follow up on term limits for Board of Health members, which will go before the Council late August at the earliest.
3. I believe one BOH member retired over a year now may let his medical license lapse - if so work to get him out right away. (We recently got the covidian school superintendent out, so this is not as far fetched as it sounds.)
4. Put in for, maybe even take another week's staycation.
5. Continue with my recent move to avoid heavy GMO foods (soy, corn, sugar beet) and not backslide.
6. Stay on budget every month.
7. Get some resolution on the tires issue.
8. Remove an out of control shrub and let vinca take over that area.
9. Lose those last 5 pounds.
Bookshelf project
clear the bed
Figure out quilt backing
Summer of Solidarity
Fix toilet
Anything that needs to be done before epic vacation
The bookshelf and bed project continue. Finished the quilt top and didn't buy the backing fabric, not going to buy it this this year since it's a buy nothing crafts related year. Might be able to find an old sheet or just make it 2024 Hana's problem. Summer is a slow time for me so I'm going to support the Writers and SAG (their contract ends 6/30 and their grievances are similar to the Writers), and one of my sisters works in a support role and belongs to a different Union so I'm going to spend a few hours on the picket line in DC. Hearing water running in the toilet that only I can hear. Already did the food dye test and will with the help of YouTube futz around with it so we can fix it or realize we need to bring in the professionals.
Going to prioritize the bedroom and hope to have it done before we leave for the epic vacation.
Got a vacation week in late summer approved. Having second thoughts about the shrub.
I like Summer of Solidarity!
Backslid on the diet and gained instead of losing. Oh well. It's hard when there are tempting foods at work from our summer cookouts.
The first two are carried over from last challenge:
Prep and paint kitchen pantry unit
Get railing installed
Replace sump pump
Prune halesias
Touch up paint on cellar window
Plant mini clover
Make prototype of light switch plate from clay (We have nice ceramic switch and outlet plates in two of our rooms. It would be nice if I could make some for the other rooms in the house. I need to do some calculations and will need to tweak and play around a bit to allow for shrinkage in the kiln, so this will be a fun challenge).
Rosa, I like that you've put a creative challenge in your list! Not a chore, but something fun. I have a big list...1.get rid of groundhogs...2. Defrost the freezer which is DONE 3. prep and paint the porch floor 4. oh so many flower beds to weed and edge 5. pick blueberries ( husband usually does this, but his back I wonky right now) He also preps the porch floor although I am capable of doing it... I may just add to this list the finished items to make me feel less behind.

I have a huge list that seems to get bigger each year, with more carry-over. Most things are not in my sole control, so that makes it harder. So for me alone, I would like to:
* remove the fence from the north side of the old dog kennel
* scrub the front porch floor and stain or seal it, or both. I will need help with moving the furniture off, but DD and I can manage that by ourselves
* move the rest of the mulch pile to new locations in the back yard mud zones
* continue the search for a decent, affordable handy-man for chores DH is no longer able to safely manage
early morning, It is so hard to find workers...I want a window washer and the quotes from the "professinals" were ridiculous...our other guy was unreliable.
*blueberry picking in process 1/2 gallon yesterday
*groundhog traps in process as the traps are baited
*edging
*weeding
*porch floor
Backslid on the GMO foods but staying on budget.
Hacked away at some more of the shrub but ran out of room in my yard waste barrels.
Playing phone tag with the attorney general's office who I believe will help me with the tire issue.
Board of Health information renewed his medical license with false information. I reported him to the state.

Board of Health information renewed his medical license with false information. I reported him to the state.
What false information did he use?
What false information did he use?
Claimed to have admitting privileges at a hospital and he doesn't.
False business address.
False business phone number.
He has been retired over a year and lost his admitting privileges a few years before that when he refused to learn new technology for the surgeries he'd been performing.

is that the only hospital he had or has privileges for? Does he actually have a business and a phone number that is simply different from the one listed? I’m just trying to figure out if you use an old résumé. Kinda sounds like he did.

He definitely retired over a year ago. Both he and his wife posted about it on Facebook. And prior to that he posted about no longer doing surgeries.

I know many of you enjoy gardening but when I see the yard work listed I am glad that I sit on my balcony and look at the beautiful courtyard that someone else takes care of.
Heard from the attorney general's office and they will try to mediate my tire issue. It is a voluntary program and I don't know if the business will agree.
Staying on budget for July.
Bookshelf project in progress
clear the bed halfway there
Figure out quilt backing figured it out
Summer of Solidarity why I haven't been here much
Fix toilet done
Anything that needs to be done before epic vacation in progress
Favorite author bookshelf is complete and we're working on the other author shelves since the bulk of our book are from a handful of authors. Two months before the epic vacation and we're on track
You can see the comforter on the bed now. It's still half covered and being used as a staging area. If we finish the bookshelves on time, we can have the bed ready for guests.
Decided since this is a Buy Nothing year for craft supplies that I won't buy backing fabric, if it's offered for free I will accept.
Summer of Solidarity continues
Toilet is fixed, husband futzed around YouTube and fixed it and replaced the flappy thing since it needed replacing soon anyways.
Put together a list of things I need or want to get done before epic vacation on the notetaking app. Also listing souvenirs for friends and family.
I'm doing badly on the GMO foods. At some point I will get back on track, maybe when summer cookout season at work is over.
Update:
Prep and paint kitchen pantry unit - This is no longer on the list due to change in goals. I am actually working with a kitchen designer and contractor to hopefully get our kitchen done in the near future, so this unit would be used for storage during the remodel, and I wouldn't worry about finish work until remodel is done.
Get railing installed
Replace sump pump - DH seems to have it working OK, so will just keep an eye on it for now.
Prune halesias - done
Touch up paint on cellar window
Plant mini clover - done
Make prototype of light switch plate from clay (We have nice ceramic switch and outlet plates in two of our rooms. It would be nice if I could make some for the other rooms in the house. I need to do some calculations and will need to tweak and play around a bit to allow for shrinkage in the kiln, so this will be a fun challenge). - First pass was done. It warped pretty badly, so looks like I collaborated with Dali. It otherwise seems pretty good as far as the measurements go except the two screw holes need to be moved a tiny bit. I'm going to probably put this on hold for now, or at least it isn't going to be a priority, because weather has finally been good and I want to take advantage for outside projects and recreation.

My balcony is being enclosed with glass windows and screens Wednesday. Once done the inside needs to be painted. I found someone to paint but she’s booked out for a few months. I have already waited 5 months for the materials to do the balcony to arrive. So although I hate painting I bought everything to do it myself. She was going to provide everything but the paint for 400 and I spent 50 on supplies not counting the paint. So I will save money.
Kitchen remodel is a big deal RR!
I just can't bear to work with the increasingly bullying and chauvinistic city council president on term limits. Put out a message to see if anyone else wants to take this over.
Tires place is playing games. 5000 miles ago they said the tire tread was a 5, today they said a 7 so it wouldn't be a warranty issue. Tread goes down not up with time but I don't have their prior measure in writing. Now I will have to find another place to do a measure for a warranty claim. Also now all of a sudden I need an alignment check.
I've been waiting all spring and summer for installation of a new pool to begin. Crews showed up early this morning to begin digging and it looks like we may get some use out of it before the season ends after all. Had a great time today watching a giant hole appear in the yard

Alan, I bet you will really enjoy your pool!!
I have lots of home issues that I struggle to deal with. I have some disability and knowledge issues. Some things I just have no idea how to do, and others are very difficult for me to do due to mobility issues. I can't get on my knees, squat, or sit on the floor. I need to change my oven element, but can't reach the back of the oven. I need to replace ceiling fans but struggle with the mobility required plus lack of knowledge. I need to paint my kitchen. that's challenging. I've been trying to get these things figured out.
That is a BIG hole, Alan! Enjoy the pool.
Tiam, I hope you are able to figure all those things out.
Excellent. projects, Alan and Terry, that will certainly provide hours of outdoor fun.

Pools are great family fun. I was talking to friends about their pool activity when their three teens were growing up. All the kids’ friends was always at the pool. Stuff broke, lots of food consumed, lots of chaos and craziness took place but…
… They always knew where their kids were. In the backyard. In the pool.
Haven't heard from the campaign who I was most in touch with. The bullying council president must have gotten to them. May not volunteer for a mayoral campaign but RFK's instead.
On the food front, it was encouraging to hear him talk about the impossibility of ordinary people being able to eat healthfully because of the costs and the need for systemic change. So I am going to stop beating myself up and just do the best I can.

I don’t know, I heard someone I respect, of course can’t remember who that was since I listen to so many podcasts, talk about debating RFK. He said RFK was not an honest debater, he kept changing the goalposts when they got into a topic. And that’s what a lot of these sleazy debaters do.
On a recent podcast Malcolm Gladwell debated Douglas Murray, and it was obvious Gladwell was outclassed in content, delivery, and just plain class. Gladwell pulled the typical dodges of a dishonest debater, dancing around the topic, name-calling, etc.
RFK has two or three major things to overcome, and I think one of them is his Kennedy name. The others are his neurological disease and of course is his “anti-VAX “stance and I don’t know how comprehensive that is or what his reasoning is.
Hacked away at the juniper shrub some more. It is a tough beast.
Doubt I will end up volunteering for a mayoral campaign.
1. Candidate 1 will have all canvassing done prior to the primary.
2. Believe candidate 2 thinks I am too controversial.
3. Candidate 3 is a long shot who I do not think will get past the primary.
Hacking away at the shrub some more. It has spread so much over the years and has many tangly roots.

Junipers are awful! I don’t plant them anymore.
Bookshelf project 75% there
clear the bed not yet
Figure out quilt backing done
Summer of Solidarity scaled back
Fix toilet done
Anything that needs to be done before epic vacation in progress
Bookshelf is 75% done and looking like we will finish before epic vacation. You can see more of the comforter on the bed, still too much stuff on it. Bed is now staging area for donations. Work is picking up and I'll be gone for October so the Summer of Solidarity has come to a close. I'll still help out an hour or two as I can plus donate to the Strike fund. Still working on the to do list before we leave.
It's a new season and my plans are:
1. See who emerges from the primary to oppose the mayoral incumbent and most likely help that person, assuming they want my help.
2. Follow up on term limits for Board of Health members, which will go before the Council late August at the earliest.

9. Lose those last 5 pounds.
Summer is over and the primary is actually in the fall, but I have helped all the mayoral challengers, abandoned term limits (may try with the new council in January), failed to oust the Board of Health doctor, took my staycation, failed at avoiding GMO foods, stayed on budget every month, on the tires got an independent measurement and they are in better shape than I thought, gave up on the vinca and actually gained weight. But fall is a new season.
