View Full Version : Office making people with physical issues walk further to get in

Interesting situation at work: my desk is by back door. I’ve been mostly using that door since I started two years ago due to knees. I was the only peasant allowed to use it. The two owners and two managers who have keys use it. Now, I’ve been told to use front door for more than a month. That means I have to walk DOUBLE the distance. We now have two others with permanent handicapped plates who are forced to use front door, but they also sit near back door. The handicapped spots are closer to front door, but that makes no difference if you sit by back door. There are spots right outside back door. So the people with handicapped plates are made to walk double the distance too. The one owner is Indian and I swear this is a caste thing. Put the peasants in their place. There’s no real reason to restrict back door use. The import manager is on my side. She told me keep bitching and my desk will get moved to the front. I like where I sit now. That does nothing for the other two gimpy coworkers.

You can formally request an ADA accommodation. From what you described it doesn’t sound like it’s hard to accommodate that request at all.

Thanks. That didn’t even occur to me. The one worker has bad arthritis in her feet. She said anywhere else she’s worked has always allowed her to use the closest door. The other coworker has a severe deformity to one leg and he clearly had more of an issue walking than me and the other gal. And he’s Indian himself.

All of you with physical disabilities need to request the accommodation. That’s totally bull crap on the part of the owner. It doesn’t cost anything to treat people with respect. Ugh!!

And what’s quite ironic is that owner follows some guru in India and makes a big production of his charitable work with needy people there. Yet, he makes US employees with physical disabilities walk twice the distance to get into the building. Wonder what his guru would think of that? Probably wouldn’t be too happy. LOL

This might help:
Americans with Disabilities Act (ilsos.gov) (https://www.ilsos.gov/departments/personnel/ada.html#:~:text=An%20employer%2Fcovered%20entity% 20must%20make%20reasonable%20accommodations%20to,u ndue%20hardship%20on%20the%20operation%20of%20the% 20business.)

Well, nothing positive is going to happen with this. I hadn’t gotten a response to my email to the owner and mentioned that to the import manager, who said she was on my (and the others’) since in this. He talked to her about this today (he wasn’t in the office). He said we have to use the front door. Period. Only people who have keys can use the back. If I want to walk less, I can move to an empty desk towards the front (there’s a bunch of empty ones since the export dept is at our warehouse). I asked her about the other two with the handicapped plates. She said they weren’t complaining and if they did, he would tell them the same thing.

So as of today, I don’t give a flying f*ck about work. He is now an enemy and I have a talent for holding long, nasty grudges. He wants to treat me like a peasant, then he gets the b*tch (which is my default anyway). I stripped my desk of the very few personal things I had, including my brokers license, which is now at home (there was no requirement that my personal license be on display). Nothing left that I couldn’t replace (my cheap little fan mostly).

The going paperless project I did another thread about? I’ve now deep sized it. I don’t care if they save $$ from less printing. They can stay stuck in old school land. Peasants don’t think or worry about stuff beyond their pay grade, so that’s how I’m going to do things from now on.

I make very nice money, so I’m going to continue sucking that teat for as a long as I can, but I will be doing the minimum.

On a positive note, a friend who knows what’s been going on, told me the really good company she works for occasionally hires licensed brokers and if I wanted her to keep an eye out for the next posting? Heck, yes. The office is closer (30 min vs 45), but even better, most are remote or hybrid. I have another friend that works for the same company. Great benefits. 6% auto contribution to 401K by company. That’s straight money, not a match. So we shall see what happens. They say getting a job is really all in who you know and that I know two people there is good.

I’m not planning on quitting current job. Going to sock away as much as I can.

I don’t understand why you don’t make an ADA formal request. What’s holding you back from that?

I was told I have no standing since they’ve offered the choice of me moving to a desk at the front of the office.

Hunh. OK, well, that’s their answer.

Might be interesting to send a proactive resume to the better company. Sometimes the world works and the right person at the right time will see it and think "this is a lot easier than an expensive recruitment process". Licensed brokers appear to be rare. your friends there will probably know who would be most receptive to receiving the resume.

Been reading a lot of stories about the seemingly small things that employers can do and dont that cause all kinds of issues in the workplace and end up costing the business lots of money and occasionally the whole business.

Funny story: My husband's former company (a Fortune 500) decided to eliminate personal waste cans. They installed office wide waste cans. Reason: apparently to save on cleaning. Well, the wasted productivity of the highly paid employees was amazing. Having them find a place to store waste in their offices/cubicles, take it to trash cans however many times they wanted, talk about the issue, etc. was incredible. Unintended consequences at work.

What would be wrong with moving to a desk at the front of the office?

I don’t want to. I like where I sit now. Simple as that. Plus the other desks near the front are piled with crap and why should I have to clean one off?

Maybe I missed something, but why can't you just move nearer the front door?

Oops--I missed your answer, too. But I now don't get your outrage.

This is just the latest in the owner acting like a massive jerk. There is a customer who is abusive, both in email and on the phone (has called me a b*tch multiple times for no reason) and I’m told I’m supposed to just take the abuse from the customer and I can’t say anything to customer. Owners won’t either. After toxic bosses and/or coworkers at the last two jobs, I’m just done.

In my experience, there's usually a fly in the ointment in every job situation. That's one of the many reasons working from home appeals to me.

Would L & I not be interested in this employer's treatment of their employees?

He thinks there is no standing for us to report the company for ADA non-compliance since they offered a move to desks closer to the front.

So friend at the good company sent me a couple of older job postings so I could see the keywords they use. Going to revise my resume this week and send it to friend who will forward it on to the appropriate people. She also said that if either of us sees a posting, she’s going to send me the link to a referral application.
