View Full Version : August Purge
Opened up a drawer and a cedar chest that hadn't been looked at in a long long time. Found some stuff to declutter. Namely an electrical cord that went with an electric blanket that had been decluttered a while ago. Also found a bag full of discolored undershirts that probably hadn't seen the light of day in 26 years when my husband packed up his apartment to move to our current house.
This is a really good principle, to go around and look in drawers. I think I am going to start doing that and working systematically around the house in drawers and closets and shelves. '
When I cleaned out my parents' house, I found drawers that were frozen in time, or things piled on top, and I have a tendency to do that, to not go through periodically and move old stuff along. Ask myself is it still useful and does it still please me?

Because I bought padded dining room chairs but wanted to keep the 4 antique chairs I needed to find room in closets for them. I only have 3 closets none of which are walk ins and one tiny one on my balcony. I accomplished that by getting rid of stuff and taking it to the thrift store. I also went through my drawers and now not all are full.
Donating a bunch of school supplies to a co-worker...
9 reams of paper
1 compass/protractor set
2 composition books
2 packs of dividers
4 hard binders
1 soft binder
I am always trying to grow plants from seed or cuttings. So...I just "eliminated" quite a few pots of duds that weren't germinating or growing.
Got rid of a ton of stuff today. Large stainless steel pot and a rolling suitcase went out via Buy Nothing group. Bunch of smaller scuba stuff was claimed by WI diving buddies. I posted it on FB for free. One item was worth more and I was offered $40 for it.
While looking for something got rid of some things in drawers. I like this idea.
I might start working on a drawer a day for a while. Start with an easy one!

We moved here ago and already have two drawers full of “office supplies quote, and other junk drawer type stuff. It’s a wreck. I’m telling myself I’ll tackle them in January.

That is cool, that you propagate plants that way. I do nothing with cuttings, and only occasionally spread ornamental annuals, such as Larkspur, poppies, etc. Anything I don’t have to babysit I will spread it.

Going through drawers and cabinets will be a good little project for me over the winter. The summer has me too committed to outdoor tasks.
I know you aren't supposed to declutter other people's stuff but if I didn't, this house would be a mess. My husband shoves things in boxes and drawers that will never see the light of day ever again. Anyway, decided to go through a dresser and found a trash bags worth of crap that needed to go. Also found a So Clean CPAP cleaning machine that must have been bought 10 or more years ago. The shipping box had never even been opened!! That went too.
Made a quick pass around the house...
Two broken headphones
Spool of twine
Two water bottles
Bunch of paper grocery bags
Two rubber coasters

I really appreciate nice bedding, and I had a wonderful, probably all-time favorite set of sheets from Company C. They were bright blue dragonflies on a white background, nice quality cotton, and generously cut. The fitted sheet gave out some years ago, but I couldn't part with the flat sheet and pillowcases. This summer, I decided to use them with a solid blue fitted sheet, and we basically used them to death, a bunch of little holes in the fitted sheet and one of the pillowcases ripped, so I was finally able to give them up to the fabric recycling bin. Except for the other pillowcase, lol, but I will probably donate that since it's in decent shape and someone might have use for it on a twin bed.
If you love the pillow case, why not repurpose it--you could put elastic around the top and a loop for hanging and put grocery bags in it. Or cut it into quilt squares and make a pillow for a chair.

I just might do something like that Tybee - another good potential winter project!
My husband...
I have kind of trained DH to be tidy though his computer room is a mess. It is his space so I leave it alone. DD was saying that that SIL has eight piles of clothing on the floor in their walk in closet that she is going to "sort" for him since it has gotten out of hand. I feel for her and wonder if some men had mommies who always picked up after them. Some people just aren't bothered by clutter at all.

Do you occasionally need an extra pillowcase? I always keep a few around. Sure they don’t match sheets but that’s OK With me. DH has made a comment or twice over the years how “ this doesn’t match “and I say OK well then call the bedding police.
Husband is tidy but also more sentimental than me. Hence why he holds onto stuff. I know what has true sentimental value and what doesn't so it's very easy for me to declutter his stuff.
Sentimental... his Confirmation Bible
Not sentimental... his "beer made this body" t-shirt :laff:

Must match, or at least coordinate very nicely. It would work with my newer blue jersey sheet set, I suppose.

The cremains of the third cat awaiting burial were interred by our newly planted Clethra alnifolia 'Ruby Spice' yesterday.

Went through the stack of magazines on the coffee table and recycled 2/3 of them. Also cleaned and organized all the wrapping paper/gift bags/boxes/etc.

I save pillowcases when the sheets wear out and use them. I decided since I only see approximately one client a month that I no longer need my desk or desktop computer which are old. I bought myself a laptop that I can use on the dining room table for that one time a month. Otherwise I use my phone for everything else. I bought a rug online 6 months ago for when my balcony was enclosed. I didn’t take into consideration that it would be smaller once it was done so am giving it to a friend.
I passed on 4 items of my daughter's clothing to a friend with younger daughters yesterday.

My hair! Went today and got it all cut off! Shorter than I initially wanted, but the beauty of hair is that it will grow. LOL. Should be the exact haircut I want in 3-4 weeks. LOL.
Side note - I tend to procrastinate about getting my hair cut and this time around it was below my shoulders. But... it feels sooooo good and freeing to have it short again! For some reason it is motivating me to declutter a couple more areas of the house today. LOL.

Loss of hair, funny!
Got rid of the top of a small cat tree. The perch was too small for my cat who loves cat trees so he would never use it. My smaller cat barely fit but isn't really into cat trees like the other one. Now that it's removed, my fat cat will sit on it and seems quite happy to be able to access it now.
Cleaned out two unused flower beds and got rid off all the lava rocks that were in them. At least 15-20 wheelbarrow trips back and forth from the beds to the woods. Also disposed of some of the garden fabric stuff that keeps out weeds and the boards that we were using as borders for the flower beds.
Just posted 8 salad forks, some not-expired cold medicine, and a whole bunch of canned goods on local Buy Nothing group. Will be picked up this afternoon.
Two flashlights
A "push" light
Box and accessories for hair trimmer
A pair of pajamas
Two pairs of shoes
One pair of slippers
Set of rubber coasters
Accessory for a cat tree
A shoe rack

We are re-doing a garden bed and I had offered some plants to a local woman. When she came to pick them up, I offered her 3 boxes of citronella candles, which she happily accepted.
Today I have another local woman coming to pick up a padded box and some packing materials.
Decluttered a bunch of work clothing items since I don't need them any longer and should have gotten rid of them years ago. Now my yearly "holdings" list is down to only 4 categories instead of around 10.
Decorated for Fall on Saturday and decluttered a couple things. A wreath, a couple scarecrow heads that were attached to a wreath, and some tiered tray decor.

Just had a big donation pickup of 7 boxes (books, misc. household, etc) and 2 bags (clothes, shoes.) Already have empty boxes in the donation corner, so am motivated to fill them! LOL
