On another long and boring day at the office I sent an email to HR asking about the pay for an internal job posting, since we don't have grades. Then I will decide whether to apply and if selected for an interview see how that goes. Who knows if the posting is a formality and they already have someone they want?

Advantages:

1. Is similar to work I do now and can do well at.
2. "Work proficiently with minimal supervision and be able to provide feedback on systems/processes." I have the minimal supervision now but not the opportunity for feedback.
3. Closer to home, 35 vs 50 miles
4. Is in New Hampshire where I dream of moving to someday, and if I do and both live and work in NH I would pay no state income tax.
5. No external customer interaction and in a town that is not a fan of masks (had them optional in the schools during covid) vs where I work now there have been both state and municipal mandates. If they come back my boss said he won't enforce it on me, but if a customer whines to the Board of Health it could be an issue and there are lots of Karens in Mass.

Disadvantages:

1. It's payables which I don't like as much as receivables.
2. Reports to a woman and that's an unknown. On average I find it easier to work with men. I am the only woman in my current office.
3. While it's fewer miles it's about 10 minutes longer to commute because it's more secondary roads.
4. While the roads are pretty flat and not minor, they are not the highway. Probably okay in winter but not sure.
5. If a recession hits and I am laid off unemployment benefits in NH are much less generous than in MA.

I would be all about the commute in the winter months. Otherwise, I would vote NH, as you have been very interested in living there and maybe you could sell your house and move there.

That sounds like a decent opportunity, especially since you are interested in moving to NH. Regarding unemployment, as a resident of MA is it possible that you could still collect MA unemployment if your job was in NH? I know that for NY/NJ if you work in one and live in the other you can collect from either of them because they have a reciprocity agreement.

The one time I was laid off I heard otherwise, so I don't believe there is a reciprocity agreement. NH also doesn't mandate high end short term disability payments so if I got sick I would get 60% not 80% of my pay, but I also would not have a state payroll tax for the benefit. I could not get paid leave either to care for an ill family member.

Wow... tough call.

The pros and cons seem to even out on paper. With that the case, I would definitely take it to the next level and see what the vibe is with regard to the female direct report and other cultural factors of the workplace. If you feel that you "belong" there, you can overcome the 10 minute extra commute and the delta in payroll tax vs unemployment benefits.

No response on whether this would be a lateral move or not. I am not going to apply not knowing that, risking hurting the feelings of people I work with now because they think I don't want to work with them (which is not the case), if it would be a no go anyways due to compensation. I wish our company had pay grades and they were posted with positions so I would not have to ask.

I heard back. They would do it as a lateral move for me if I apply and am selected, but it typically pays less. Now normally that would mean my future salary growth is limited, but the company typically gives everyone the same percentage raise.

I will have a phone conversation with the hiring manager after work tomorrow. Trying to not be nervous.

I told them no thanks because of the way they handled covid/mask policy.

They mandated masks only for unvaccinated people which was never company, state or municipal policy, and I wasn't argumentative but I'd done my homework and I knew her blaming those entities for a discriminatory policy was not accurate.

My boss was demoted and transferred to another location yesterday. I will get some of his work to do, which will cut down on the boredom.

Waiting to see what the new boss is like if and when they find one. In the meantime two big bosses are alternating being in the office every day, sitting in an office next to my cubicle. It's a little nerve-wracking sitting near the hatchet men all day, and in the same building as the two snitches who threw the old boss under the bus.

Glad I didn't move near the job because who knows how I will like it now.
