View Full Version : December Purge
I have done no purging yet this month, but am setting up this thread to motivate myself.
Years ago, I set a goal of getting rid of just 365 things in a year, and I met that goal. The counting really helped motivate me! Then, for a few years, I got rid of about 700 things. But this year, after a big push in the spring, I've done very little. I've only gotten rid of 131 things, so I'm aiming to get rid of 234 items in this last month. It may be overly ambitious, but I'm going to give it a try.
No need to be a counter like me to chime in here!
Tell us what you're purging!

I threw out 3/4 of an old family quilt pieced by my great great grandmother. It has been bugging me for a couple of years, the middle part is so ragged. So yesterday I cut out the middle part and sewed together the outer edges to make a lap quilt. It’s not pretty, but it’s done.
since I had a sewing machine out, I finished all the sewing projects. I cleaned out the old sewing basket. Granted, didn’t throw away all that much, I threw away 8-10 little items.
An old tablet will be going once we know a secure way to dispose of it.

I don't really count, but try to fill our donation boxes by the time a pick-up gets scheduled. It's usually easier to get started once their is a firm date, but having the box(es) in the "donation corner" makes it easy to walk by and drop things into it.
Good luck with the goals, everyone!
I like this idea--think I will start with 5 things a day as I have been taking in things in lately, and still have a few things of my parents to figure out. Five a day; husband says he can do 3 a day.
DJ That's great!! I am sure you will do the 234 items! I dumped many plastic spoons, forks etc. that I keep just in case. I don't like plastic utensils and don't like using them, so in the trash they went along with an old water insulated cup...I have a few things on the give away pile, but need to convince hubby that he really won't use them!
I have been saving "cute" glass jars with gold or dark green lids for years! Just because they are cute. They are on a shelf in the basement and I haven't gone down to get one for ages. So, about 15 of them are NOW in the recycling bin. I dither about who might want them, crafters etc. but living where we live it is too much effort to find a taker. They're just so cute!!!!
Good for you! I just bought a new/old sewing basket on ebay and opened it up and it is full of a sewer's stuff-- old buttons, snaps, needles, etc. I now have more things to get rid of, but also a lifetime supply of Smetz needles, so I guess it was worth it.

Well, I'm terrible at this, but I just dumped 10 clear plastic containers (take out, salad, grape tomatoes, of the non-recyclable type) and 6 sturdy but smallish cardboard cartons. AND a large Styrofoam piece that had been formed around something. Cardboard we recycled, the rest, alas, is in the trash tote. *sigh* My upstairs rooms are a total mess, so I'm trying to clear them out a bit at a time. Maybe if I keep track here, it will help motivate. Hasn't worked in the past, lol, but hey, one can but try, right?
Haven't been decluttering much because I don't have much to declutter lately. I did get rid of a Christmas pillow. Wasn't comfortable to lay against and kept sagging in parts. I have gotten rid of so many seasonal pillows this year and it seems like by year's end, I won't have any more left. Also, a couple tattered hand towels.
Early Morning, Good for you! I force myself to throw out any carry out containers, no matter how useful I think they might be ""Someday". But it is hard. I also recycle the aluminum pie pans from frozen pie crust. I used to save them, thinking "Oh, I'll make a pie..." Duh! Not! I have pie pans and I don't make pie crust but once a year when blueberries are in!! Now I should get rid of the baking pans I don't use anymore!

An old tablet will be going once we know a secure way to dispose of it.
Ugh, yep. I have one of those to dispose of.
Just took one of those heavy brass lamps from some other era to the thrift store. After my light bulb search saga, having to buy three way bulbs and candelabra bulbs for one lamp didn't make sense andymore. And it had been given to us when we moved here.
A pair of (costume) stud earrings will go out tonight. Too hard to get the backs on and I don't have the patience anymore. First I have to put on the reading glasses and even then my manual dexterity is not what it used to be.
Thanks, all, for the inspiration and encouragement. I've only made one baby step so far: returned 2 pie plates to the store. I thought I needed them for Thanksgiving, but then I found some in the very back of my cupboard.
Early morning, a bit at a time is all that's ever worked for me, and it's also very much a "three steps forward, two steps back" process sometimes. My house is on the more cluttered side at the moment, but it is nowhere near as bad as it was 6 years ago. Also, because of all the baby steps I've taken over the years to set up new systems for what things go where, clutter accumulates much more slowly in my house now and is cleared out much more quickly. Good luck!

Thanks! Today I dumped up four plastic plant pots - two from the basement (caladiums I tried to save over last year), two off the front porch (Mums - I've given up of planting fall forced mums!) and recycled them. The potting medium went under a bush. So not much but something. Also gathered up a couple more small boxes to break down and recycle. Hoping DH will do that later...

Using our local Facebook giving page, I gave away an old set of throw pillows from Pottery Barn, a set of formal cloth napkins from Mom's house, and a formal tablecloth also from Mom's house. But here is the good part! I put a box of wonky pottery seconds out front when the women were coming to pick up their items, and I urged them to help themselves. I got rid of a whole bunch of pottery, and they actually were very enthusiastic about it!
How nice of you, and I bet they were thrilled!
Getting rid of some of the contents of the sewing box I bought on ebay--I bought it for the box and inherited someone's flotsam and jetsam, so put it all in a plastic bag and will give to Goodwill. A window candle. A draft dodger that was looking a little ratty.

We went to a fundraising dinner last night and there was the usual auctions. I bought a package deal of edibles. No crapcoming into my house for later disposal from this event.
Yes, I like this idea of counting, although 5 is proving too hard--am going back to 3, since I'm trying to keep it easy going.

That's great Iris. Not letting it into your house in the first place is the best form of "proactive decluttering."
We went up to the attic to spray wet n forget on the outside siding that we could not reach from the ground. I got rid of flies, dust and horrible spider web bodies vacuuming it all up. I moved things...next step getting RID of THINGS.
Got rid of a really really nice tablecloth yesterday--gave it to my daughter in law because it goes better with her dishes. Gave them a cool jigsaw puzzle, and gave my granddaughters a calendar that came in the mail with wildlife photos. Also gave my son a wonderful Erzegebirge candle holder that had been in our house when he was growing up. Might as well pass something along every Christmas while he has children to enjoy them.
Total for yesterday= 4.
I just want to have fewer things, even nice things.

I am having a hard time purging our old refrigerator. Hear me out.
last summer we were inundated with tomatoes. We kept them on the kitchen counter until I could process them, but they attracted fruit flies that stayed around for weeks after the tomatoes were gone. so I’m thinking if we can fit this refrigerator into the garage somehow then put tomatoes in them and flies out of the house.
In this consideration, please know that we also have two other refrigerators down in the basement. Those are pretty much under the control of DH and I’m not sure what’s in them and how much room there is. I think his plan is to get rid of one of them at some point.
So much inspiration here!
Yesterday, I returned 3 items to Target, gave away 2 items on Buy Nothing, and threw out one too-old item in the fridge. Total for month: 8.
My goal of 234 items for the month seems pretty crazy ambitious at this point, but it is actually. motivating me.

Argh, I hate returning things to stores. Only once in the past year have I returned something to Amazon. But now I have a brand new set of sheets that are the wrong color, the box is mislabeled. And then I have another item that doesn’t work, so I might return that as well.
Decluttered the utensil drawer and took out the multiples and anything we haven't used. We don't need four rice paddles or too many wooden spoons. Ended up getting rid of 2 plastic grocery bags of stuff and the hand mixer that we stopped using when we received the KitchenAid as a wedding gift.
Being able to open and close the drawer with out having to shove something out of the way is the greatest feeling.
IL, lately my Amazon returns have been at Staples, and they give me a ten dollar off coupon every time I return something, so I buy printer ink there.

I had no clue! I usually go to Whole Foods as it’s the closest to me. Staples closed maybe 5 years ago and was turned into a nice Aldi.
I upgraded my iPhone to a 15 Pro model. That means I no longer have any use for all the Lightning connector cables, plus no use for anything with USB-C now (charging wall blocks and car adapter). I had some nice 10ft long cables, too. Gave it all away to two coworkers. One gal was thrilled she’s able to lay in bed and look at her phone.

long cables that charge reasonably quickly are really nice, agreed!
A friend gave me one once that was long, but she told me it was a cheap one, and it took forever to charge my iPads.

The ones I gave away were Amazon Basics braided ones. Not expensive and worked well. These days I buy Anker only. Anker also makes really nice backup battery packs.

I gave away another nice vintage tablecloth via FB group (good), but the woman did not take any wonky pottery (bad), although I suppose she was more than offset by the woman who took a whole box of the stuff the previous day.
I finished culling my linens and I have a bag of vintage lace doilies and such to go to the thrift store. I also gave a small box of vases to my sister to drop off at Saver's.

Well, it seems paltry - but I got rid of three cardboard boxes (empty:|() and 4 plastic flower pots. Also taking a big tub of stuff to the antique mall in a few minutes, where hopefully it will find new homes and leave us more cash! If only people would buy stuff faster! :~)

I have discovered that a sizeable portion of my clutter is stuff that I should have returned but didn't, so I've gotten very into returning things.
Yesterday, I dumped 4 bottles of expired prescriptions in the drop-off at the pharmacy. New total for month: 12.

Ugh! Does anyone here have excess soda?
I foolishly bought many cans of soda for dinner parties last month, but no one drinks soda. So now I have all this excess. And then, being doubly foolish, I forgot to pull out diet Coke for my sister-in-law, who actually drinks it, when she was here for Thanksgiving.
And then, at our Iris meeting someone brought two dozen cans of soda that were not used. So I loaded them up and took them to the food bank, along with all the other canned food that the group had brought. I wasn’t sure if the food bank would take the soda but they did.
personally, I drink water, tap water, and have limited patience with all the soda preferences people seem to have. it seems to me that we are all buying all kinds of soda pop because we can’t predict what people will actually drink. And then we are left with crap tons of the stuff.

As you know, I have a large family that comes up here to visit often... the rule is, "bring your own beverage of choice." When I go beyond that to invite friends and neighbors, I have the same rule. You bring a bottle of wine, you can take it back with you. You bring two cans of Coke Zero and drink only one, you get to take the other home. (I have a son who will only drink Diet Coke and it has to be in cans; my son-in-law will only drink Coke Zero and it has to be in cans; DH will only drink Diet Pepsi and it has to be in 16 oz bottles. Never mind ALL the other choices of beverages out there.). Much easier to simply ask people to BYOB
My sisters have figured out that to have their diet coke in the can they need to bring it. No problems with that.

I cleaned out the night table yesterday. I had carefully selected this night table because it has abundant storage, but that can be a double-edged sword as you all know. There was a bit of miscellaneous crap that could be tossed, but also a blow dryer that I'm in the process of giving away on FB, and a few small items to give away or donate.
This weekend, I am donating four bikes (maybe more). Husband and I bought ours 26 years ago and rode them less than a handful of times. Two sons have a couple bikes that no longer get ridden now that each has their own car. There is a place near us called Mike's Bikes that can take them so just have to load them in the truck and take them over there. Probably can sell ours for a decent price since they are practically in new condition. Boys bikes are more well ridden but still in good shape. He does repairs as well so anything needing fixing will be taken care of by Mike's Bikes.

Spoke too soon. Husband vetoed it and then went on a rant about giving things with value away and would his hot rods be next. Such a drama queen that man is. >8) Even after explaining that two bikes haven't been ridden in decades and the other two in several years, he still said no. Thought he might want some extra room in his workshop but apparently not.

I will say this about DH, this positive thing—he has been hauling dumb junk to our local auction house a few blocks away. It amazes me what these old people buy. I went to one sale last year and the crowd was old, dirty, and were buying old and dirty stuff. Oh and ugly stuff.
I have a list of things for him to take to the next sale. We will get a few dollars out of the stash and DH is happy and I am happy for the obvious reason, junk is gone.
In this exercise it is all about having a truck to haul the stuff and having someone willing to haul it there.
That sounds exactly like my husband!
Should have just done what I normally do and just go behind his back and get rid of them. He wouldn't even noticed I'm sure. I did finally get rid of all but one of my seasonal pillows. Just need to try it come January and see if it's comfy or not. Probably not and it will get tossed. At one point, I probably had 15 seasonal pillows so being down to one is an accomplishment considering seasonal decor is my weakness.
ARRRRRRRGH!!!!!
What really set him off was when I explained to him that I'd rather someone else use it than just have it sitting around. He swore that he might ride a bike again. Good thing I wasn't in his presence because I would have definitely rolled my eyes at that statement. He is 58 and almost 300 lbs with a broken back. Don't see bike riding in his future.

Dreaming of December purge: as I put up the 15th Christmas card on our mantle, I’m looking forward to sweeping it all into the garbage on December 31.
I’m such a grinch.
which reminds me, I recycled the Grinch items I used in the tablescape display for our exterior house Xmas decoration. The wreath came from a neighbor’s yard, set out for the trash man. Still had tags on it.

That is the main reason why they were so easy for me to declutter. They were in large trash bags that took up a lot of space no matter where I tried to store them.

We only had throw pillows back in the day because my grandmother learned to make the corduroy covered ones with all the tucks. She had so much fun that we all had lots of throw pillows, mostly in very unseasonal colors - the corduroy colors no one seemed to want ended up on clearance, and Grandma was very frugal. Now, though, we have pretty decrepit upholstered furnishings and you need pillows to make yourself any sort of comfortable. I'm rubbish at shopping/paying for upholstered furniture, so - pillows! Mostly they are bed pillows, or, for smaller ones, folded in half smooshed bed pillows. So cover changes are easy and necessary, and may as well be seasonal as anything else! As always, YMMV :)

Today I was thrilled when DH said about a large table we’ve had around here for years “it has no value. “Yay! This means we don’t have to try to palm it off on someone else. I’m not yet sure how we’re going to get rid of it, hopefully chop it up into pieces.
All my wineglasses and some items from under the kitchen sink.
I had a goal at the start of the year to not drink because it’s now been established that there is no safe level of alcohol intake health wise, but I didn’t know if I could make it through the holiday party without imbibing but I did. And discovered without the alcohol it’s not really enjoyable, I am fine working these people but don’t have a lot in common with them, and will probably skip next year. It was a different mix of people last year and better, and the food this year sucked too.
So I consider that goal achieved and out the wineglasses went. The medical autonomy people I have gotten to know have also inspired me to live a more natural, healthy lifestyle.

Jeppy: In the past couple of years, I have gone from someone who consumes several drinks a week (usually wine) to one or two glasses of wine a month when I'm at a restaurant or social occasion. I do still like having some wineglasses around though, because I like having a drink from a "fancy" glass, even if it's a mocktail or my latest favorite Fever Tree grapefruit soda. I'm with you though as far as devoting less real estate to alcohol and related accoutrements.

I find it much easier to get rid of things that can be recycled or reused... Dropped off a small bag of stuff at Goodwill, and have another shopping bag full for the Vietnam Vets. Have a box of magazines to either recycle, or drop at a laundromat.
A pair of worn out earrings.
hopefully chop it up into pieces.
Reminds me of watching a neighbor take a chain saw to an old sofa and put pieces out every trash pickup day until it was gone. In Austin, we had two days a year when one could put out their junk and the city would pick it up for no extra charge. Here we have private trash providers that charge extra for that so people get industrious with making it disappear.

Yes! I figured that out this year, that I don’t need need to keep track of every password I have. For minor websites, those seldom visited if at all, it is easy enough to reestablish a password.
I’m going to cull my password list and keep just the really important ones. And then I’ll stick a copy of that in the Legacy file

You are doing well at keeping your house clear of excess art! Thus is the problem with making things—what do you do with them after they are made?
This is why I like floral design, the temporary nature of it keeps my house clean. Well—yet I continue to buy containers. Oops.
IL, I agree that art is so much fun, but where to put it all??? I take a drawing class which is fun and on computer paper, so they are all in a folder! I would love to do more painting, but what to do with it all stops me. I'm happy with the drawing class.

There is a hobby that fascinates me, but one I deliberately did not pursue because it requires a room full of “stuff” and that is: making miniature rooms. Miniatures have always fascinated me. I went to miniature shows, read Nutshell News, etc. Our city has a Miniature Museum run by the local miniature society.
And I see what those people do with their rooms and houses once created—donate them to the Museum!
IL, that’s how all those lovely miniature rooms ended up in the Art Institute of Chicago. I love those!
I went though my books and pulled out about 50. Mostly Great Lakes shipwreck books that I bought and maybe read once. Posted them on my personal FB page for a giveaway. They should go within a few days.

Iris: There is a FB group/page called "Abandoned Art" that I think would amuse you. I do a bit of this informally, making little dragonfly pottery tokens that I leave for people to find in the woods and places where we go walking.
All 50 books have been spoken for. Posted a portable butane stove and small propane heater on local Buy Nothing group. Had them for years and never used. They’re attracting a lot of interest. Will go through more things.
Deleted about 2800 emails yesterday while listening to podcasts.

My sneaky and surprising husband sold old wooden planers for $50. These are beautiful old wood items he pulled put of a dumpster in the city. I was thrilled to see they went to a young guy. Most ypung people would not know what they are.
IL, that’s awesome.
Got rid of a ton of stuff in BM group. Toiletries, office supplies, kitchen stuff.

I do this periodically. Good for you.

Will check out
I have a habit of jotting down notes on little pieces of paper and placing them in a HOLD folder. Things like book recommendations, websites and such. So I am slogging through the folder today and am determined to get the paper clutter cleared away by mid-day tomorrow.
Two worn refrigerator magnets.

I cleaned out my office drawers yesterday--sorted through the random paper clips, boxes of staples, business cards from people I don't even remember anymore, thumb drives with who-knows-what on them, paint chips for all my decorating projects, old keys, shipping supplies, etc etc.

I LOVE this!
Several years ago it used to be a "thing" in our area to paint rocks and leave them different places. People could pick them up and keep them, move them to a new location or whatever. (I would take a picture and then leave it in a different location). There was also a Facebook page that folks could post what they found, etc. so they could be tracked. Found one and gave it to my sister who took it to New Orleans!!!!
Pinky toe, I have to do the "snibbles purge" frequently. I at least am using larger pieces of paper to jot things down. But oh, my, it can be a mess! Good luck. Using the phone would make me crazier, so snibbles are the way.

Put old credit reports in my to be burned bag. Trying to get the new annual ones but the ordering by phone instructions changed and I had to try 4 times. Hope I get them. Some years they won’t send them and I have to get the attorney general’s office involved.
Must be the cold weather, but I got a bee in my bonnet today and decided to go through some things. I made a go through list - sheets, fabric, files, paperwork etc. There are also some things taking up space I would like to deal with rather than put off. My dead MacMini still has stuff on it to retrieve (mostly photos that weren't backed up yet) but not sure where or how to start on that.

I'm sorry you are going through this. Wishing you a good outcome and speedy recovery.
Me: hoodie that made me look like a Muppet and a car trash can that goes in a cup holder
Oldest: several pairs of jeans and work pants
Youngest: a windshield fog mit, an extra large rear view mirror and a pair of hiking boots
