Guardrails vs Guiderails

I just read this story, and was wondering if it was true: Does Pennsylvania really use the term “guide rail” because a lawyer once convinced a jury that “guardrail” implied a guarantee that you would be protected from the consequences of reckless driving?

Well, in Wisc. I've heard it called a Beam Guard, whatever that is, lol. Berm I could understand, but no, I was assured it was BEAM. Otherwise, I've seen/heard guiderail and guardrail used in various states, it's not a new thing. I'm sure there were lawyers in the naming mix, there generally are!

okay---nobody will be protected with absolute certainty; but i figure the purpose is to deflect vehicles from leaving the roadway and hitting oncoming vehicles or going down a steep embankment. that's what i figure---but hey--i ain't got no masters degree in feminist studies or art history. so what do i know? Yup.
