View Full Version : Tesla Cybertruck
I just saw my third one out in the wild. I just don’t get it. To me they look like something a third grader would design. I must not be the target audience. Anyone here have a different opinion.
Nope. I've always assumed the overall look was supposed to be the ultimate in streamlined, aerodynamic design but it just looks odd to me.
Nope. I read they’re having some issues, too.

Maybe on the age of the designer, I would have a different opinion, but not about the look of the truck.
I've not seen one in person, but it looks rather awkward in the photos. Maybe it drives like a dream.
I've not yet seen one in the wild either, but I think its natural habitat is well outside the mundane sensibilities of flyover country.
I will be getting a electric pickup truck in the next year or so.
It will be the Ford F150 electric, as it seems to work like a real truck for my applications, and can serve as a backup power supply for my home, making it "free" compared to the Tesla Powerwall I had been considering.

I've never heard of or seen it either. Definitely doesn't look like my definition of a truck.
I don't see a new truck in my near future, but have been eying the little Ford Maverick. It's available as a hybrid, inexpensive, and about the right size for a city truck to haul furniture, landscaping materials, etc. and maneuver through city traffic and parking.

I saw that the other day. As powerful as those things are that would be truly scary.
Saw another one today. I guess there are going to be as common here as the Tesla cars are. Anytime I’m stopped at a red light at least a couple of the cars around me are teslas.
Tons of Teslas here in the Chicago area.
For a lot of people EV’s make sense. Especially as a second car that rarely, if ever, goes far from home. I probably wouldn’t buy a Tesla because I’m really not a fan of the iPad thing as the main way of controlling everything. But when we were in Dallas for the eclipse we had a genesis g80 EV for our rental car. The one flaw was the small trunk compared to the large interior but otherwise that was a NICE car. And we did basically a 200 mile round trip drive up to Oklahoma to get out of the cloudiness without a problem. Charged it up while we were at dinner after. I assume it’s pretty pricy to buy though since it’s the luxury brand for Hyundai so probably comparable to a Lexus.
And for a lot of people, EVs don’t make sense. If you have no way of charging at home, have long distance trips through rural areas, and maybe in a cold climate.
My next vehicle will likely be a Toyota hybrid.
I see a lot of Teslas around here. Maybe not as common as Prius, but close. I get the impression they are affordable for the middle class now, whereas they were sort of exclusive at an earlier time. Charging stations are fairly common too, although I rarely see them in use. Also, I've been seeing more Rivians, but they are definitely priced for the well off. My doctor has one. They fall into my simple living category of conspicuous consumption.
My sister bought a bolt EUV and loves it. After the various rebates/tax credits it was only $18k and since they have a garage and aren’t roadtrip kind of people it’s perfect for her. I plan to keep my old Honda until I retire six years from now but at that point I’ll likely buy an EV. I assume by then the battery technology and charging away from home issues will be mostly resolved.

Going to disagree with Alan here, as in my area of flyover country, we had a business, RESLA, that rented parking spots in our shopping center and rented out Tesla's and did a decent business (we are close to a supercharger). They pulled out last week, guessing they didn't like the landlords rent bill that includes their percentage of the property taxes and insurance. (typically doubles rent)
Bae, have a friend that spent over a million on cars in the last two years, two of those Ford Lightnings and three electric Mustangs. One of the trucks hasn't been driven much yet, but from all the reviews I have seen and a couple people I have talked to, the trucks don't seem like they will have the range of the cybertruck (still probably good for your island though). Just something to consider as to how often you need to charge.

Oh, we have our fair share of Tesla's, just haven't seen one of the Cybertrucks yet.

The Ford F150 claims a range of 240->300 miles, depending on which model you get.
The Cybertruck claims 340 miles.
It's 80 miles from the mainland ferry landing to downtown Seattle. Plus 12.5 miles from my house to the ferry landing on this side. 185 miles round-trip to Seattle. The 240 mile version *might* just work for me, as I could in theory make it to Seattle and back without bothering to recharge.
Around the island, my Fiat500e has a notional range of ~110 miles, and I recharge it perhaps once a week by simply plugging it into a 120v outlet in my garage overnight.
I suspect the range of the electric trucks drops significantly if you are towing anything, but I rarely tow anything much more than a small boat, and then for only a few miles.

There’s a big issue with broken/out of order chargers.
I had been contemplating a Stanley Steamer, and spent a day learning how to operate one (a fellow here has one for tours and parades). It is a bit of a bother, and more effort than I wanted to spend on a gag for weekly visits to the village.

Indeed. One of the issues we ran into with the rental EV was chargers that were inaccessible outside of certain hours. We ended up going to two that weren’t accessible before finding one at a Walgreens.

In my village, there are 3 level-2 chargers, that are free to use. Two at the grocery market, one two blocks down the street in front of a community hall.
At any given time, one of the three is broken.
Worse yet, they are unusable by locals during the summertime, as people with long-range Teslas seem to have a desire to "top up" out of some demented range anxiety, and hog the spots.
I've been reading and hearing about EV charging cables being stolen, or stripped of their copper, at public recharging sites like shopping complexes.
Anyone aware of this happening in your neck of the woods?

Here in St. Louis they are gathering for the apocalypse, coming together in a largely abandoned shopping mall.

I saw my first Cyber Truck in a parking lot and was able to do a walk around. As I was taking a photo, the owner came out of Whole Foods and offered to see the inside. I have to say it was pretty luxurious and quite spacious. It's very large. I did not get a good sense of it's large size or odd design from the photos. The steering is wireless and the bed cover folds up towards the roof at the touch of a finger. The owner said it is faster than her Mach-e and turns on a dime. I could see some functional attraction for it over an F-150. She said they were on a waiting list for five years.

okay---what you have there is like a combo of a Delorrean & a Hummer, styled like a UFO. Just the ticket for the consumers with too-much-income-coming-in, trying to look cool. Massive Fail, Stock Scam. Tucker was prosecuted, for stuff like that. hope that helps you some. thankk mee.

okay---new news. But yeah---at the last cruise, there were several Teslas participating, and a Tesla Truck pulled a massive hole-shot at the intersectioin VS I forget-what, but that Tesla was a screamer. Only--pretty quiet. That said--I saw one today, bombing down Chestnut, and it looked fierce. I don't care what they say---I'd liketa have one. Lucky You, to anybody that can afford one. Yup.

we have one here in Hermann, just up the hill from where we live. We see it often. I saw it coming toward me in the darkness of early evening, some weeks ago, and it was creepy.

I liked this. Never was an early adopter, unless you count weapon systems during the Strategic Defense Initiative. Still waiting for all those people who thought missile defense was a waste of time to admit they were wrong. I was extending my phones’s antenna in the flip phone era, and flipping my phone open well into the Age of Apple (they used to call me “Captain Kirk”). My kid despairs of me, but I don’t think the Cybertruck is ready for prime time, except maybe as a status display.
Apparently the Cybertruck isn't very "trucky"...

I saw a video of some sheik or prince manning a 50 cal mounted in the bed of a Cybertruck. Could be that the Tacoma has been upstaged for the fashion conscious rebel. They are bullet proof, or so they say.

They are not formally rated/certified to any standards for ballistic resistance.
The regular model's glass is not-at-all resistant, it is just glass. You can order it with "bullet resistant" glass for an uocharge - those cannot be rolled down.
The body itself resists low-powered handgun rounds - .22LR, 9mm, .45ACP.
Rifle bullets go right through the Cybertruck's panels. Even fairly low-powered rifles that aren't powerful enough to use for deer hunting in most jurisdictions.
So, it's mostly silly marketing to cosplaying dudebros.

One demonstration I watched was a guy firing a Thompson automatic into the door and it just dented it. I assume a .45 and fairly close range, but yes, a high powered rifle went through and it didn’t take a .50 caliber. It seemed like an expensive experiment. Better than nothing against the maddening hordes and much better than a standard terrorist issue Tacoma.

A couple of years ago, I got some very expensive training on how to open up armored passenger cars and trucks, and was issued special tools to do so. (We have some fairly high-ranked government types living here, and I guess the Secret Service wanted us to be able to get the passengers out of crashed vehicles and into a hospital quickly.). Having taken them apart, my conclusion is that real armored passenger vehicles are quite different from the cosplay-level protection the Cybertruck offers. If I were concerned with personal security at that level, I'd get a real vehicle designed for the task.
But, I mean, I drive a small electric Fiat 500e clown car, a 6 year old kid with a beanshooter could probably total the thing.
My cousin's son recently took delivery of one and immediately had it wrapped. It's ugly as hell but I think he likes the attention.

My condolences to you and your family.
I looked into the Cybertruck with an open mind, but it seems not ready for prime time yet.
When I need to replace my current fleet of silly trucks (Hummer H1, Toyota Tacoma TRD/Pro), I'll probably look to an electric one, but likely one made by a traditional truck manufacturer that can do truck-like things, and be reasonably-reliable, and not require a lot of fuss and bother.
I do like the thought that the Ford electric F150 can be used as a reasonable backup power solution for my entire home, at a huge cost savings to the system I was thinking of installing.

I don’t know if the augmentation makes it more toy-like or more menacing. Maybe it’s a menacing toy
At least they finally got out the first responders guide for the Cybertruck, quite some time after the product was released into the wild. For every other model, they’ve had the guide available before product launch.

There is one car I have always despised for its design: the Corvette. I think that the Cybertruck might be #2, or it might even bump the Corvette to the #2 position.

Toyota has said they will be bringing out a small pickup in 2025 to compete with the successful little Ford Maverick. It will be called the Stout. Probably a hybrid or EV option. Early rumors so far but apparently it would have an on board power supply of some sort. It's on my radar to replace my 12 year old Tacoma one of these days if it pans out. My Toyota has a manual shift which I assume would deter thieves since most young people don't know how to drive one.
The one Cybertruck owner I talked with raved about how it drives and rides. Maybe that makes up for the way it looks. Functionality over fashion?

I have never liked Corvettes either, especially the ones from the 70s and the 80s those look super cheap to me. I do like Corvettes from mid 1950 to mid 1960s though, I would take those oldster roadsters.
I hate the retro cars from the 2000s: the PT cruiser, the SSR, the viper. So very stupid.
reminds me, I learned yesterday that MG is making a new roadster they are distributing in Europe. It’s entirely electric. DH says I cannot get it

Alan, that is one ugly truck. I've seen several that are unwrapped, and they are ugly enough, no reason to spend more to increase the ugly, lol. I've seen pics of the new MG, and it.... looks like a car. Sad, that.

Yes, the new MG isn’t especially interesting. I would call its styling “quiet.” It looks like a Miata somewhat and somewhat like my Fiat Spyder.
I think I will save my $ for a Mercedes AMG SL,which is WAY WAY out of my price range. Now THAT is a burley car!

We have a cybertruck in the area - I saw it parked in a driveway not too long ago. Ugly - in my opinion.
