Old vacation photos

Here’s a new thread to post some old photographs of vacations gone by.

here’s a picture of me in 1971 on the grounds of Stonehenge in England. You can see that there are no barriers around the stones. Back in those days anybody could walk up to all the stones and touch them, lean against them, sit on them.

On that trip my parents also let me run around London unaccompanied. Can you imagine letting your 16-year-old daughter run around one of the world’s largest cities with no phone contact.? Pretty amazing. They bought into the whole “England is without crime “ idea.

Here are old photos from other trips to the same place, Stuart Castle outside of Inverness Scotland. I was, and still am to some extent, obsessed with Scottish Baronial architecture.

First photo is from 1977 or 78, around there. At that point this castle was unoccupied and decaying in several places.

These photos are decades later, when we took a family vacation to Scotland and several of us stayed at the refurbished castle, then a castle-hotel.

this is the wonderful Renaissance garden of Stuart Castle, very real-to-the-original-time. The heavily manicured syle of Italian gardens came later.

PS: I just noticed the bulldogs in the painting above the bed and laughed out loud! I didn't notice them last month.

actually, this is a castle in Romania. Looks like Hogwarts to me.
