I’ve been watching bits of commentary about the rioting going on in the UK about immigrants.
I’m coming away with these thoughts which may or may not be true, but they are my thoughts at the moment:
#1.. British politicians have been for too long, promising a reduction in the number of immigrants coming into the UK but they have not met those promises. People are big mad about these promises.
#2. Societal integration and cultural assimilation in the UK is not going swimmingly among immigrants. There is shocking insularity in immigrant communities. We are used to the model in the United States where the first generation works hard and learns scattered English, assimilates into the main culture somewhat, and pushes their children to reach middle class success. That is not happening in too many instances in the UK.
Conservative religions are at play here.
#3. Some commentators from the UK blame the welfare state in the UK where apparently everyone who is an immigrant immediately gets a cash income stream. If this is not true, someone tell me.
Here in United States we are not as free with that kind of money.
#4. the culture of our own dominant immigrant population in the United States is very different from the culture of the dominant immigrant population in the UK. I think I prefer our own illegal immigrants to theirs.
