View Full Version : Halloween consumerism
I am not a big holiday decorator - just some basic things if I am feeling inspired to do so. I have noticed though the past few years that Halloween decor is off the charts. I have seen numerous huge skeletons in people's yards along with coffins, ghosts, inflatables etc. I was looking at the other grandparent's FB (they live close to DD) and they had bought the grand-twins Halloween T-shirts, hair accessories, tableware and decor, carving kits and several very large pumpkins. Maybe I'm clueless but it feels like too much - especially introducing small children to the idea of buying holiday themed stuff in excess. And then much of it goes out in the trash.
I don't seem to have a big problem with it here.

For the first time this year I bought Halloween decor because I saw something I liked, three witches that sit in your yard. I thought they were cool.
And then, we had a theater girl staying with us who played one of the witches in the production of Macbeth in our town, she stayed here for two weekends. So that tied into her.
And then yesterday, a young man saw me coming out of my driveway and asked if those Three witches in our yard were a reference to Macbeth. He teaches English at the high school and he is telling his students how Shakespeare permeates through our entire culture

I don't buy my grandkids anything. I've been living in fear that my kids will ask me to make their costumes (I made costumes for 4 kids for at least 15 years, and I think 60 homemade costumes is enough for me.). However they don't seem to need me. So all I do is go and walk around with them trick-or-treating. I don't decorate because by October 15, 90% of the neighbors are gone for the winter.

Dang it, now I'm going to have to make them for real. I'm envisioning maybe some sort of Afghani pumpkin/lamb/onion filling.
Off the the farmstands to see what I can scavenge!
Of course it's off the charts. So much the better for taking selfies. :|(

Must be different where you live. Anything unwrapped would be untouched.
