View Full Version : Social Security and Medicare
Curious what people currently collecting from these programs think? Will the republicans succeed in killing them before you are dead? Or will that only happen once you're dead and the rest of us are hoping to collect? Asking for a lot of friends.
Old people vote - a lot. I think doing away with those would end up with that party being out of office next election cycle.

LOL, are we resurrecting that old canard again?
…and then, of course, the vultures should be released.
No traction with the Nazi thing, so we’re back to trying to scare people about Social Security?

as if the Republicans in charge will actually try to do something about deficit spending.
Well, I’ve always thought it would have crashed before I got old enough to receive it, and have never included it in my financial planning. Yet, with some luck, I will begin next summer.

I am still hearing people worried about being put in camps to help them focus. LOL
Friends grandfather was brought over from running the V2 camp. Are they expecting to be forced to work on Spacex stuff?
I think it's all one big question mark but I would assume younger folk need to plan for alternate funds in their old age.

I wonder if the people in the camps will be eligible for Social Security and Medicare? maybe that’s how “they” will reduce the bill for those entitlement programs

I doubt our votes will matter in the future. Remember trump telling the evangelicals just vote this time. You will not have to do it again.

Were people here illegally ever receiving those entitlements and has Trump promised to deport people here legally? I think there may be some conspiracy theories lingering, but maybe not?
My 2 minute fact check on SS said that Harris said Trump would be somehow reducing benefits, however Trump said a few times he wouldn't be touching SS. I didn't see it as part of the project 2025 agenda, although Medicaid is on the chopping block.
Social Security is not high on my worry list.

Medicaid for millionaires might be a good place to cut! :)
But in the end, I do agree that the cost of asset testing probably is not worth resulting cuts to the program. Spartana over on the Mr. Money Mustache forum says the VA performed asset tests until 2015 for eligibility, but I don’t know how that worked. I guess one was on one’s honor to accurately report the worth of one’s art collection, fine jewelry, furniture, tools, and etc.
Honestly, as a "young" fellow I'm more concerned about the ACA. My intention is to retire at 62.5 in March of 2030. But since I can only use COBRA for health insurance for 1 1/2 years that means relying on the ACA for a year of health insurance. If republicans succeed in pulling that rug out from under people I'll have to work an extra year so that I can use COBRA from 63.5 to 65 and then transition to Medicare if it still exists. Not a huge deal but annoying and unnecessary. Thank god I don't have a physically demanding job where working an extra year would be difficult to do.
Maybe if trump had said something more than "I have a concept of a plan" to replace the ACA I'd be less concerned. But we all know that when he says a concept of a plan that means the republicans will just push for outright repeal and trump will just sign the bill since it won't affect him.

there are at least four threads of on the MMM Mr. money mustache website debating the disappearance of the ACA.
The year we were on it, it was very nice. It was super cheap. In fact, I think it was free for us. And that was a nice switch from having paid COBRA premiums. But then DH’s father died and left a chunk of money so we ended up paying a lot for ACA plans due to our high income but that’s fine, we had it.
