Back from Nogales and all I can say is OMG. And today he chose the puppy murdering Governor of South Dakota as his head of Homeland Security. OMG. 4 years of this? Rob
Noem for DHS was a head scratcher for me, more based on her background than the dog thing. Matt Gaetz for AG was another. It’s hard to imagine him getting confirmed.
I had a thought that Gaetz is some sort of loyalty test to see who might go against Donald’s wishes, but there is probably more to it. As they might say about the trump cabinet, the fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree. I’m waiting for the RFK Jr shoe to drop.
in my corporate days with routine reorganizations and a rotating door of management changes, that there was some perceived benefit to creating chaos. As a wise janitor used to say, sometimes you just have to stir the kettle.

I think you’re right about Gaetz. He’s such a nasty, self-serving piece of work I could easily see him failing his confirmation hearing. It’s hard to see any Democrat voting for him, and at least a handful of GOP senators turning him down.

Combined with Trump's proposal to set up a "warrior board" to review our serving 3/4 star senior military officers and to recommend dismissal of anyone “lacking in requisite leadership qualities”.

While I certainly agree the DoD is top-heavy and not focused enough on warfighting, I don’t think this guy is the way to go about it.
And now RFK Jr at HHS? Looks like Trump is trying to be provocative. He’s going to waste his first hundred days in ridiculous confirmation fights.

Some major news outlets are raising that Trump may try to circumvent congressional approval through recess appointments.
And Musk telling everyone better get for austerity because things will be rough. May be fine for top government employees but middle class and below forget it.
I really doubt 3 or 4 star generals are slackers or unqualified. I forgot, Trump said he knew more than the generals.
and the possibility of food or gas going down much is slim to none.
he said he was going to be a dictator on day one.

I have been waking up thinking I landed in an alternate universe where weirdness is now ordinary. It is all very unsettling...I've never in.my life been into drag but if I were so inclined......would clicking ruby red slippers three times get me out of this? Plus it would be a middle finger salute to Project 2025. Rob

Well, looks like Hegseth may have some issues with sexual assault. I'm shocked, shocked.
I know nothing about these two nominees in question. However, I do love the Massie and Joel Salatin combo for USDA. Planned our vacation around a tour of Polyface farm this past summer. Love Joel's sustainable farming practices.
Welcome to the fourth turning everyone. It’s gonna be a bumpy ride…

I don’t know why people like you and Steve Bannon set such store by such crackpottery.
I see Gaetz is now out of the running. I would have thought he’d have been really difficult to confirm, given his past silliness and self-aggrandizement, much less his unsavory personal life.

If any good comes out of this crazy administration in terms of things I can really get behind it's the odd bedfellows of Trump and RFK Jr. While I don't subscribe to RFK's anti-vax stuff, I'm thrilled about his taking on Big Ag. I really hope his appointment wasn't just for show and that he's given latitude to make real change. A collaboration with Joel Salatin would be a very good start.

So, should we sell our share of our family farm in the heart of Big Ag country?

I certainly would never presume to tell you what you should or shouldn't do with your family farm--the operative word is "family" farm. I don't know exactly how your family runs your farm, but I know that the food industries subcontract with small and large farmers, so it's not a black and white issue. Small farm vs big industrial farm operation, etc.
However, I just feel the needle needs to start to point in a different direction. There are so few small farms left these days. There are so many independent farmers under the thumb of multi-national companies. Farming practices today are not sustainable. I would like to see a trend emerge where smaller regenerative, bio-intensive farms pick up the pace.

I own a large share, and serve on the board, of perhaps the largest agricultural operation in my county, and have for ~25 years now.
Most of our products are "organic", "salmon-safe", and half a dozen other trendy labels.
Our practices create topsoil, instead of depleting it. We have been able to restore the salmon stream that runs through our land, and the salmon are returning. We pay a living wage to our workers. We do not import many inputs to our production from off-island.
I believe our farming practices are quite sustainable, by design and craft.
When I look around at the hundreds of farms in my county, the increasing amount of good land that is going back into production, the increasing number of younger folks getting involved in agriculture, the protection we are giving to the land to keep it from being turned into McMansions, and the sensible practices being used on the land, I am heartened.

That is wonderful to hear! And so good to hear about the salmon! On my East Coast islands, there are a dozen small farmers within 30 minutes of me, most certified organic and the others growing sustainably but can't afford the certification. I can walk to one farm that has an honor system fridge on the road, and the others are less than 20-45 minutes away, and we have robust farmers markets every weekend. My DIL is a horticulturist on an organic farm. So things are definitely happening here as well.
I'd love to hear more about your share on your large operation. How does that work?
Gaetz was a throwaway. Intended to make the other unqualified cabinet jackasses seem normal. The woman that trump named today will be just as awful but more competent since she actually has experience as a corrupt state AG. And it’s doubtful she’s as rapey as most of his other male cabinet picks. As far as we know at this point she’s just about the money.

Yeah, I thought that too--it's like they are using the Hornberger Method from Thirty Rock.

You all are giving Trump too much credit for strategy.

What sort of corruption are you accusing her of?

at a minimum accepting a $25k bribe/campaign donation to make the Trump U scam problem go away. And it's not an accusation, it's all quite public. Why would she try to hide it or feel shameful? It's totally on brand for the maga faithful.

I'd encourage you to read the book. He actually makes a strong case. I know you won't but if you want to I'll even provide a link. We might actually be able to have an interesting conversation if you did but otherwise I guess we'll stick with pointless snark that accomplishes nothing.

okay----'cordin' to the trustworthy nooz owwtlett you can trust, K-malla left DC with no one officially in charge, and sat on a plane for hours that landed in Ho-woy-ya. Prolly for a debriefing by her sponsors. Also, giving her a grocery list of bad things she & Joe can do, before they leave office. Like, pardon several thousand thugs who were allegedly "rongfully convikked", cuz dey dindu nuffin. Stuff like that. Also, the Harris's & yObammas need to have a group photo on the beach in their swimwear. Yup. Ha.

That’s pretty bad, although less so than Gratz. So it’s a sort of improvement.

I read “Generations” about ten years ago, but wasn’t terribly impressed. It seemed to me they cherry picked various historical events to support the thesis that identity politics can be applied to birth cohorts. I don’t think history can be reduced to simple waves, cycles or trends.

So you read a completely different book and found it to be lacking for the point I was trying to make. Got it. Go back to your bourbon or whatever it is that you use to pretend that it doesn't matter who is president and we'll both be fine. Because I'm now 100% certain you won't bother reading the book I suggested. And honestly that's fine. You're probably not up to a discussion of it.

I didn’t read the second book because:
It was simply a rehash of the first book.
I generally don’t have time for people who think they’ve decoded history. It smells as about as respectable as astrology to me.

I have to admit, your perspective is so boomerish that all I can say is ‘ok boomer.’ I also don’t expect you to care enough to read the book and see why I said that. Your loss. Go on living in your bubble as the world implodes from the fourth turning.

Ok, Nostradamus.
I found this video because I don't know anything about The Fourth Turning but it might help catch up those of us who want to catch up with the idea:

You’re right. I also lack the time to delve into the details of Scientology for much the same reason. I reject the basic premise. Label it as you will.
Years ago, I read a book by Karl Popper called “The Poverty of Historicism”, which pretty much ruined me for deterministic models of history. I see reductive generational thinking as every bit as useless as reductive racial or class thinking, so I’m not a fan of CRT or Marxist explanations of history either. So I’m happy to take my chances on your imploding world without the insights of Neil Howe or Steve Bannon to guide me. You can call that a bubble, but I call it time management.
"The Fourth Turning" sounds like an interesting take on history, and it's in my county library. I think I'll check it out - thanks, jp1.
