View Full Version : Avian flu - US way behind
Guess we didn’t learn anything from Covid. Good article.

There's a big cat sanctuary nearby which just lost 20 cats due to avian flu. Bobcats, cougars, and a half-Bengal tiger. :(

Yes, I read about that yesterday. Cats are especially susceptible to this.

I've been watching the local news and there was a segment on bird flu here in VT--mainly affecting fowl.
I have found two dead crows in the yard in the past few months. As if they just fell from the sky.

Creepy. I just found a dead pigeon in my yard a few days ago. Rob
My county’s Public Health Officer is coordinating with my agency, to prepare for this. The situation, in this region, looks “interesting”, and we’re planning accordingly. Then again, low-frequency/high-risk events are sort of what we do.

I find the timing a little disturbing as the next regime in charge plans cut backs in the NIH and CDC. At the present it's unlikely to be a threat to people, but it's already disrupting the intensive culture of industrial live stocks.

Did you read the article I posted? Farmers, who often vote GOP, are refusing to let USDA officials on their farms to test cows. I hang out elsewhere on line where there are lots of GOP voters and they’re not trusting the CDC at all on bird flu due to covid. Forget that bird flu has been around for ages. This is a problem.
It’s to the point now that Covid deniers are attacking anyone who expresses concern about the bird flu.

One of our farmer friends has done extensive research on the current state of the avian flu, and she agrees that this is a rising problem and a threat to public safety.
I see where the department of HHS has dedicated 500 million to Moderna to research a bird flu vaccine. The little news I could figure said that RFK, Jr. or whom ever else is driving the bus can't revoke. I've not seen where he has weighed in on things, but would think his anti-vax stance could impede things. I imagine it was some sort of last ditch effort for funding before the new regime.

All sorts of different animals are now dying from bird flu. A bunch of dolphins in FL. A otter at a Chicago zoo.
I’m reading more that this strain getting into cows should have been a huge red flag as cows have not been a species that tended to get bird flu in the past.
There’s a third human case where they can’t figure out how the person got it.
